After further inquiring about the purpose of Freemasonry, I have been told it is designed to make, "good men, better". Before I can become accepted by the fraternity, I must have an extensive background check run, and meet with current members in my home. The purpose of this meeting is to get to know me, my family, learn what I expect from Freemasonry, and what it expects of me. They are looking for men with good moral character, and a belief in a god of a monotheistic religion.

What is their understanding of good? What would make me good, but disqualify my neighbor from joining? Would a Christian with a troubled past be disqualified, but a pseudo-Christian who is pro-choice, and a homosexual be qualified? Would the apostle Paul been accepted? He was a murderer and the self-proclaimed, chief all sinners (1st Timothy 1).

Jesus says in Mark 18, “No one is good, except God alone.” If God is good, (which he is) how can he be made better? If I am justified, sanctified, and glorified in Christ, then I am good as well, but only through Christ. What could Freemasonry do to improve on this? Standing before many and proclaiming myself as good, and having others do the same is already taking me down a path of vanity and self-righteousness. What level of improvement can they provide that I cannot receive from the Sprit through the Word?
