As some of you know, I work in the fast-food industry. Now for a quick introduction to food preparation and serving, there are alot of rules and regulations that are supposed to be followed. Some of them are really annoying and take up alot of time and seem to do nothing useful. Oh yes, I have got in plenty of trouble, because I tend to get rid of the ‘useless’ procedures in order to speed up the efficiency. Needless to say, the managers weren’t very impressed!
Well, it turns out that for almost every little rule (there are so many it’s not funny!) there is a reason. It can be food poisoning, blocked drains, slippery floors, and plenty of other things, like customer satisfaction.
I got to thinking, that all those rules did have a purpose. And so do God’s rules. Every one of those rules and the guidelines he gives in the Scriptures are all for a reason.
Recently I conducted some research into child discipline (yes, you will probably be reading some more about that in coming issues). Now the Scriptures talk alot about discipline with a rod. According to today’s ‘experts,’ such methods are wrong. I would like to get into it more, perhaps one day I will, but for now, all I can say is that the crime rate is rocketing, and young people’s ethics are plunging into a crisis. My reasoning is this: the crisis we see today was caused by a change in child-raising, etc. ‘Form of discipline’ was one of them. If the conditions are getting worse. we are obviously going the wrong way! My conclusion from observation, is that the Bible’s method is the best way.
Another example is homosexuality and casual sex. How do we find solutions to all the diseases such as AIDS that are infecting thousands in the world? Well according to the ‘experts’ of today, we should use condoms. What is the Bible’s solution? Sex inside marriage ONLY! If you think about it, that would instantly end the epidemics! But no, we have to go and find some other way which doesn’t work. If we would only stop and consider how much better this world would be if we stuck to the rules God has given us.
I am a firm believer that every guideline in the Scripture is for a reason, and the moment that we step out of it, problems will occur. Tons of problems will occur, guaranteed! The simple reason is because Jesus is our Creator. He knows what is best for us. We cannot tell him otherwise, because we hardly know anything compared to him.
The least you can do, is thank Jesus that he doesn’t suffocate you with rules like I do at my workplace! We have alot of freedom, and as long as we stick to the rules that God has given us, we are safe. If we step out of them, then problems will eventually come. Stick to what the Scriptures direct. Jesus knows what is best for you, and he has a purpose for every rule, just like my workplace has a purpose for all their ‘trivial’ rules.
Our God is not a whimsical, impersonal, cold deity. He is purposeful, personal, and loving. Praise his name.
