Pure – not mixed or adulterated with any other substance or material.

Christian’s often ask for a ‘pure heart’ but it seems like we have forgotten why Jesus came to die on the cross.

Romans 4:25. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification (NIV)

My beef with all of this ‘pure heart’ prayers is that we are set free from our sins. The reason why you keep on falling into the same sin over and over again, you simply will not acknowledge that Jesus has already done it for you; it is time to stop dwelling on the past and look towards the cross. The bible says in John 8:36. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (NIV).

Especially, if you are a born - again Christian who has been baptised. Jesus, came on this Earth and received the holy Spirit of God through baptism. Matthew 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. After this you will not find Jesus praying for a pure heart in the bible, if we are all trying to be like Jesus we need the Spirit of God.

Let us now go into King David’s prayer and, see why his situation is different from our current situation. David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Psalm 51:10. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (NIV)

Psalm 51: 11. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy spirit from me. (NIV)

Back in King David’s time or like your history teacher said BC (Before Christ). Everyone was living under the law. It was essential for King David to say this prayer so that he can remain in God’s presence and still have the Holy Spirit inside of him. In those days, the moment you sinned it was instant death, no way on Earth, you will enter heaven; even for stealing 5p lollipops at the age of three years old. The unfortunate thing is that everyone breaks the law so it was impossible for anyone to get into heaven.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. (NIV)

Now we are living under grace so even if you sin, you have already been forgiven. Now this is not an excuse to go out to commit any sin under the sun. The Lord does not want you to do that, he wants you to avoid sin at all cost. Hence why we should worship him in fullness and in truth.

Romans 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace. (NIV)

Prayer: Heavenly father, help me to not fall blind to your grace. I thank you for the spirit that you have given me. I thank you for what you did on the cross. I pray that I may no longer dwell on the past but that I may always look towards the cross because of your righteousness. In Jesus mighty name I pray. Amen
