When entering a Masonic temple in the U.S. you will most likely find a pedestal or alter with a Bible placed upon it. Ceremonies are conducted and oaths are taken upon it. Freemasonry isn’t a religion yet it has religious attributes and claims roots in Biblical events. On the surface this may appear to be acceptable.

Most Masons in the U.S. are Christian. Again the Bible is found in most of their temples and lodges, but would it be acceptable to replace the Bible with another religious book? As a Mason you would have to say, yes. The Bible, both OT, and NT are used for Christians and Jews, but the Dhammapada (Buddhism), the Gita (Hindus), the Granth Sahib (Sikhs), the Koran (Muslims), and the Zenda Avesta (for Parees and Iranians) could all be adequate for use. Freemasonry teaches each one of the mentioned text are holy and sacred. Commonly called, Volumes of the Sacred Law, or VSL. What is more disturbing is how the VSL are viewed when compared to the Bible.

The Holy Book of any religion may be used as a VSL, provided that it teaches and its adherents believe in a Supreme Being. All are open on the pedestal and each is treated with the same respect and they are, in every way, equal to one another.*

“In every way, equal to one another.” To a Mason the Bible is a good book, but not the Good Book. Other religions may find certain books sacred, but being sacred doesn’t mean they are holy. A Christian shouldn’t find any text sacred or holy, except the Bible.

Only God is holy. God does say, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” Lev 11. Our holiness only comes through Christ; day by day we are sanctified by staying honed in on his will for us. A Mason may stand with a Koran in one hand and a Bible in the other and claim them both as equal, but a Christian cannot.
