Before I begin, I would like to just say..... WOW! At first, I thought this would be a book where they just dance around the issues; I am overjoyed to say that this is not at ALL the case. Part 2 is SO heavy, Part 2 will be broken into 5 parts itself. That's right; it is THAT GOOD! This is the kind of book that you either love or hate.
Part Two: The Five Points Defended: Their Biblical Support
2.1: TOTAL DEPRAVITY OR TOTAL INABILITY
OVERVIEW
This chapter sealed this book for me as one of my favorites. The detail and exactness put into this chapter is unparalleled. I especially appreciate how to begin, they explain that these doctrines must be taken and viewed as a whole. There is included a nice introductory paragraph in this topic before diving into the first point. They begin by explaining what they mean by TOTAL depravity, and nicely clearing up some common misconceptions concerning the aforementioned topic. It is well detailed and not at all watered-down like some previous works I have read. It is straightforwardly and unashamedly giving concise detail about Total Depravity. Then, they get into the part that, to me, makes this an invaluable tool for Reformed studies. It breaks down the point into its core element, and step-by-step lists Scriptures to defend each point. All Scripture is written out there as well, so you dont have to look it up: it's all right there! In my copy, there are 7 WHOLE PAGES of verses, each under a specified heading! Sometimes headings are even broken into SUBHEADINGS! Very concise and easy to follow, yet deep and fulfilling.
THOUGHTS
Wow, I cant put this book down! What a tremendous job was done by these authors! The more I read, the more I want to read! Many of my questions are not only answered, but are answered and then given SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT! So far, a very solid read, and again, a must have for any Reformed reader!
FAVORITE QUOTE
"For these five doctrines are not presented in the Bible as separate and independent units of truth. On the contrary, in the Biblical message they are woven into one harmonious, interrelated system in which God's plan for recovering lost sinners is marvelously displayed"
Steel, Thomas, Quin, pg 18
Part 2.2 coming ASAP!
I will put a copy of the same book cover as mine at the end of each blog, to forewarn.
