“And He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many among them shall stumble; they shall fall and be broken, be snared and taken.” Isa 8:14, 15
We believe the following will prove beneficial in our study on Our Lord’s Great Prophecy as many of the Lord’s professed people don’t see the true connection between the two houses of Israel. They imagine the Lord’s reference stated above by the prophet as merely pertaining to the natural houses of Israel, viz. the house of Israel and the house of Judea and fail to see the true significance behind this prophetic statement, that the two houses the Lord was actually referring to were in truth--the Jewish house and the Gospel house that they stand related to each other as type and anti-type, and as such parallel each other in many ways.
“The words types and anti-types are quite often used in Bible Students’ discussions but these words are not found in the Concordance nor in Vines.
“The Word Book Dictionary”, however, has this to say about these words among other descriptions:
A type is something having symbolic significance; a setting; an emblem; something that foreshadows something to come: a pre-figurement; a person, object or event in the Old Testament regarded as foreshadowing a corresponding reality in the new dispensation.
The same dictionary also says of the word anti-type: A person, thing or idea represented by an earlier type or symbol such as a New Testament event prefigured in the Old Testament.
The Apostle Paul in his writings in 1 Cor 10:1-6, 11 says: “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under the cloud and all passed through the sea: And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea.” Then he goes on: “And all had the same spiritual nourishment but God was not pleased with many of them and they were overthrown in the wilderness. And these things were our EXAMPLES…Now all these things happened unto them for EXAMPLES: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.”
This word ‘examples’ is interesting because in the margin of the KJV it has ‘types’ so these ‘examples’ are types for our learning, i.e. the anti-types.”
The end of this Gospel age is the antitype of the end of the Jewish age, the two being exact parallels in both time and circumstances.
Note: this does not however suggest that every single event has a corresponding antitype or dual fulfillment. The parallels belong only to the nominal systems themselves, and do not include anything belonging to the new dispensation.
The parallels affected merely the nominal Jewish house THERE and the nominal Christian house HERE…No parallels as between the Pentecostal church and the true church now are to be looked for.
The parallels belong only to the nominal Jewish system which went to destruction, and to the nominal Gospel church, which is now going to destruction.
