@Sabertooth Well, that's interesting, because I had just assumed that the black there was more of a semi-coloured cartoon style representation of actually red lips. It would be interesting to know what exactly you had in mind with the black symbolic allusion. (On a separate note, black lipstick can indeed be effective and elegant.)

It's interesting that in Song of Solomon the lips are scarlet; reminds also somewhat me of the historic linkage between Elizabeth Arden's popularizing of lipstick one century ago and its symbolism in support of woman suffrage (although care should also be taken not to secularize too much such Scriptural references to scarlet lips, it does convey a sense of a woman heralding fine values and change).

You are right; the features are not at all excessively depicted. They reflect reality, and purpose in heralding terms.

@Sabertooth In any case, it's unfair of ppl to give you grief for this piece of artwork. It's...well, plain accurate.

@Sabertooth PS: After all, if the trumpeter is indeed a woman, then why should she have to look manly rather than womanly? which she does indeed.

@farouk When talking human figures, there is a wide range of realistic and healthy variations. (That is part of its appeal to me, and other figure artists.)
