I'm currently enrolled in a course at the University of South Carolina called Biblical History and Literature. I have a professor that has been teaching for literally almost half a century now and he's regarded as the world's top expert on the imperial cult and he has a lot of knowledge about the Bible (or at least scholarly knowledge). In one of the first days of class, we obviously started out with Genesis and the story of creation. His theory was, of course, that the events did not really take place and that it was an explanation for the origin of the world and humans. This is a point of faith of course and obviously you're not going to get that in the college classroom. However, his theory with the story was that Adam was not actually a single man. He maintained that Adam was a play on words for the Hebrew world 'adamah' which means ground. Adam is a term for humanity and not a single person in other words.I had to quibble with this assesment. For one, there are many of the "begat" phrases in the Bible and it clearly says that Adam and Eve begat first Cain and Abel and then Seth. This points to single individuals and not some sort of collective name.Genesis 5:3 KJVAnd Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:What do you think?
