Hello there,

I found these variations in reference to the words, ‘The Gospel’, which would be a fruitful study for anyone. There are others such as, ‘the fellowship of the gospel', and ‘the afflictions of the gospel’ and so on, which all add to the subject and provide avenues for further study.

What was the gospel by which you were saved, for example? and of what did it consist? It is all ‘good news’, but not all relate to the same gospel (or same form of good news).

The Scripture also refers to 'another gospel', and of those who 'pervert the gospel of Christ', and tell us how the gospel can be made of none-effect to those who hear it.

Also, what does it mean to 'obey the gospel of God'?

Do you have any thoughts on this subject of the gospel, or any of it's many facets?

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

It would be best to capitalize the word "Gospel", which means "God's Good News for Mankind". While there are many different designations for the Gospel (while there is only one Gospel), the heart of the Gospel is CHRIST HIMSELF.

He is the Gospel. His death, burial, and resurrection are the core of the Gospel. And unless the Gospel includes a call to repentance, it is not the Gospel. Unless the Gospel presents Jesus as BOTH Lord and Christ, it is not the Gospel. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) The name Yeshua (Jesus) means GOD IS OUR SALVATION.

Hello Chris

Thank you! May those who desire to learn and study - Get the increase from God :)

Came across this scripture during study of the hope texts:

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death (Dying with Christ Jesus - also being raised again with Christ Jesus) to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Hello @Enoch111,

Thank you for your contribution. I followed through on the thoughts you expressed regarding the necessity when preaching the gospel for a call to repentance. Looking up the use of the word, 'repent' with the use of a concordance.

Yes, the word GOSPEL means 'Good News'. John the Baptist and The Lord Jesus Christ preached 'The gospel of the Kingdom' (Matthew 4:23) to the people of Israel, saying, 'Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand' (Matthew 3:2; Matthew 7:9). Peter in Acts 2:38, speaking to the assembled Jews from the land and the countries among whom they were dispersed, 'Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.' (+ Acts 3:18-20) Paul also, tells Agrippa in Acts 26:20, that immediately following his conversion he preached as follows, ' ... But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.'

* What follows in Acts 26:22-23 is useful to add, for it encapsulates what Paul had preached up to that time, which is 'The Gospel of God' (Romans 1:1-4). ' ... Having therefore obtained help of God,
I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great,
saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
That Christ should suffer, and that He should be the first that should rise from the dead,
and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.'

Following your thought on repentance further to Acts 17:30, and Paul's words to the Athenians, regarding their 'gods many',
'And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:'

* There is more that I feel I would like to consider in regard to this aspect of God's 'Good News', the GOSPEL, and hopefully will do so, but at this present moment I have to go offline.

Take care, Enoch111,
With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

The backdrop is misrepresentation. I should not need to say anymore about this because every one calling themselves Christian should understand but because that is not the case I'll say a little more.

God's character and how he governs has been maligned by the Prince of Darkness. Jesus set the record straight. His whole reality declares how God is. This is the good news aka The Gospel. The reality of Jesus is a total vindication of God's character. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

what it means to obey the gospel means to obey the good news of Christ. The apostle wrote if that which you received from God remains in you and your walking in his love - that is obeying the gospel.

Hi @quietthinker

This is a different way of looking at what the 'good news' of God is, and I thank you for it. For it is true. This widens the gospel message to include all that the Lord Jesus Christ came to make known, and not just the message of salvation.

Thank you for this new perspective.

'I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth,
but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?
He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father:
(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning.
If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you,
ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.'

Hi Chris, Gospel is old English for good news maam. Jesus said the primary reason he came to the earth was to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God Luke 4:43. Of course everything Jesus taught would fall into that category, as well as all the teachings of the New Testament.

Perverting the gospel is easy to see especially today maam, as there are well over 1000 different faiths that have branched off from the original first century faith claiming to be Jesus' followers. Acts 20:29,30

Now the question is, what is it that Jesus declared/displayed/testified about God?

If one wants to know what the reality of a person is, just put them under pressure. It doesn't take long to see their reality. We can see a microcosm of that principle on this site.

Sooo, Jesus is put under pressure. During his ministry he went about doing what no other human being had done for the uplifting and healing of whoever availed themselves where ever he went and then in Gethsemane the pressure was of such intensity he sweated blood....ohhh how he didn't want to go through the ordeal waiting for him. Can you imagine pressure to the point of sweating blood?

He had the power to subdue his enemies with a word; to have legions of angels which excel in strength at his disposal. We have a small window into this when he asks the armed mob 'who do you seek?'... they where flattened ...yet he chooses not to push it.

He is humiliated and violated beyond recognition and crucified...a death by slow suffocation yet he has kind words for his executions and his co-crucified making the promise of life to one who a little earlier was also mocking him.... and in his hour of extremity he thinks of the care of his mother and gives her care to a disciple who had a few hours earlier abandoned him.

Yes, the pressure was unremitting and we see Jesus deliver.....he delivers in the face of the power to end the whole sordid affair. His delivery is testimony to the character of God.... to a God who risked all to give life to the fallen race because he couldn't bare to go through eternity without them.

This is our God. This is the good news....will we trust it? or do we dare we think that the one who feels compassion and kindness towards his creatures to the point of death will insist that those who reject him will be punished for ever in flames??? ....Ohhhhh, if that is how we see our God we have not known him for who he is.....we have in fact believed the evil one who has superimposed himself on scripture and painted God with his own characteristics.

'In this was manifested the love of God toward us,
because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world,
that we might live through Him.'

(1John 4:9)

Hello @quietthinker

Yes. God, in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ manifested His love to us, His righteousness, and His judgement. He destroyed the works of the Devil, and confirmed the promises made unto the Fathers of Israel. He did not shout aloud in the streets, bruise the broken reed or quench the smoking flax but showed mercy and compassion: but where there was religious hypocrisy, and defilement of the temple for gain, He, by the words of His mouth, and by physical force condemned and drove out those so doing. He fulfilled all righteousness, while turning the other cheek to those who smote Him.

He rebuked the attempts of Satan to thwart His purpose, and resisted the force that would have taken His life before the time of God's choosing. and in the manner prophesied. The Garden of Gethsemane, that you referred to, was just such an attempt: for as you say, He was pressed beyond measure and sweat drops of blood, death could have taken Him before God's time; that was the cup that He wanted taken away, and not the cross itself. For He had come to do the will of the Father, and was under no illusion as to what that would mean (Matthew 20:18-19), and in no way sought to resist it. For it was He who said in Luke 9:62, 'No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.'

God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, at such great cost. Yes, all four of the gospel records show in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ the Father Who sent Him.

Praise His Holy Name!

In Christ Jesus
Chris

'Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us,
and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;
Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame,
and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself,
lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord,
nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him:
For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.'

(Heb 12:1-3)

Hello again @quietthinker,

You and I have a road to travel, a race to run, and a prize to win . We would, like Paul, win Christ, and be found in Him, not having our own righteousness, but the righteousness that is of God by faith (Philippians 3:8-9). We seek the resurrection out from among dead ones too (Philippians 3:10-11). The resurrection unto life that is promised us (2 Timothy 1:1). We too would resist all attempts to deflect us from reaching that tape, and winning that prize (Philippians 3:14). We too would walk in the light of God's presence, thereby exposing sin and religious hypocrisy and fulfill the purpose that we were called unto (Ephesians 5:8 & 13).

We too have a warfare to wage, and a purpose to fulfill by the grace of God. Our walk must characterise the same long-suffering of our Saviour, in lowliness and meekness preferring one another in love. Seeking to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of the peace which Christ procured for us (Ephesians 1). Loving one another, and loving our enemies, in the sure knowledge that we are in Christ Jesus our Lord(1 Corinthians 1:30-31), and having died with Him, are raised far above all principalities, power, might and dominion, and are seated in Him at God's right hand. Looking for His appearing when we too, in resurrection glory will appear with Him (Colossians 3:4). To the praise of His glory and grace.

That same power with which God raised Christ from the dead is the same power which He has towards us, and we will, by His grace, endure to the end. May His will be done, and may fruit be born in each one of us to His glory, and His Name glorified.

With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

Paul laid out the gospel in its complete entirety in 1st cor. 15. The death burial and resurrection of Christ. That is the gospel.
