I have noticed that many times, when Jesus or the Apostles wish to make a point, they often quote the scriptures. I have seen various numbers but we can confidently say that the New Testament quotes the Hebrew scriptures more than 200 times. Some say over 900 times. The point is, if Jesus and the Apostles used scripture to defend their position, then who am I to disagree?

I can also confidently say that Jesus never quoted another rabbi as authoritative. In fact, the crowds realized that Jesus was speaking with his own authority, not predicated on Jewish tradition. Jesus often spoke highly of the scriptures and even was heard saying, "the scriptures can't be broken." and it was God the Father himself who taught the people to always check the word of a prophet against prior revelation.

What scripture did this come from to Peter?

matt 16:17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

Lk 3:2 Under the high priests Annas and Caiphas; the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert.

what scripture? book, Chapter and verse please?

Well, I don't allow myself the luxury of reading my theology into a passage under study.
I can't claim to understand a passage until I am certain that I am allowing the passage to speak for itself.
I agree that's the ideal but I think it's arguable you don't actually do so.

While John 3 might have the New Covenant in view, it might also be the case that John 3 might be saying something unrelated to the New Covenant. For this reason, I can't immediately assume the case, reading the New Covenant into the passage. For similar reasons, I can't allow John 7 or John 10 to inform the meaning of this passage.

Let me back up one step. The interpretation of any other text requires the reader to ask three questions: 1) what does it say, 2) what does it mean? and 3) is it true? With regard to the scriptures, we don't need to ask whether the passage speaks truth. However, the Bible invites the reader to ask another question, "what is the significance of what was said"? Why is it important?

Before I can answer the third question, I must be able to answer the first two questions first. Bible translators have helped me answer the first question, "what does it say?" The hard work ahead is figuring out what it means. In order to answer the second question, "what does it mean" I am constrained by the text itself. The answer as to "the meaning" must come from the immediate context. What clues does John give the reader?

First clue:
"Rabbi, we know that . . ."
Second clue:
"no one can do these signs"
Third clue:
"one cannot see the kingdom"

Within two sentences we have three clues indicating to the reader that the topic of discussion is divine revelation. Nicodemus admits that his knowledge concerning the divine appointment of Jesus is empirically based, i.e. he witnessed the signs. Jesus informs Nicodemus that his ability to make the connection between the signs and Jesus' divine appointment was a gift from above. Isaiah predicts that the coming messiah will heal the sick, and therefore, since Jesus is supernaturally healing the sick, this is a sure sign that Jesus is the Christ, the coming one. But not everyone is willing to admit the truth of what they saw. Jesus is telling Nicodemus that his recognition of the Christ is a clear indication that he has been born again.

Forth clue:
"enter a second time into his mother’s womb"
Fifth clue:
unless one is born of water . . .

Jesus relies on Nick's understanding of childbirth, specifically related to the womb. Jesus, as a wise teacher, bases new knowledge on what is already known. Nick already knows that when a baby is born, several things exit the womb, specifically a baby, a placenta, and other liquid. Jesus is answering the question as to why a man doesn't need to enter his mother's womb again. Remember, birth is the subject matter. Jesus is basically saying, "unless a man is born twice, once naturally, and again spiritually, he can't enter the kingdom of God." Natural birth isn't enough.

Why does this matter? The Jews prided themselves on their birthright. They prided themselves on being children of Abraham. Jesus often warns them against putting hope in that fact alone.

I could say more, but this post is too long.
1. It's really a lot simpler than this : Nicodemus sees that Jesus is a holy man, and wants to know from Him how to enter God's Kingdom.
2. Jesus, Who knows men's thoughts, detects Nicodemus wants to know, and tells him : you must be born of God, a spiritual being, to enter the spiritual Kingdom.

Again, nowhere is it indicated "New birth" had been made available.

I'll have to take your word on that. I haven't studied Patristics.

Hi Cady,
while I appreciate you taking me at my word, i would encourage you to examine them yourself.
Here is an excellent resource: Early Church Fathers

All I know is that sacramentalism isn't taught in the Bible.

2000 years of Christianity says otherwise. Here is just one example:

Just as Eve was taken from Adam's side, so the Church is taken from Jesus' side when it is pierced by the lance. The Blood and water pouring out signifying the great Christian sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist..

Compare with

So there are three that testify,

the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.

Peace be with you!

1 cor 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread.

what scripture is Paul quoting?

”I have received” “delivered”
That’s tradition
Teaching authority of the apostles
Paul explicitly says Jesus told him the story. This is NOT tradition.

In the same letter, speaking of himself and the other Apostles he says, "we have the mind of Christ", indicating that his teaching is NOT based on tradition but rather on direct revelation from God himself.

Paul, in his epistle to the Galatians is emphatic when he asserts that the true message, not the person himself, carries the authority of Christ. He tells you quite clearly that even if he should bring another gospel, that he himself should be considered anathema. The word of Christ is preeminent.

The Jewish religion had "elders" just as the Christian religion has "elders". Nonetheless, the teaching of the elders should never be original; it should always come from the scripture. Jesus was critical of the Jewish elders who delivered customs and beliefs that were contrary to the scriptures. "And He answered and said to them, 'Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?'" Any so-called tradition of men must bear up under scrutiny, checking the tradition against the revealed word of God.

Jesus is NOT telling Nicodemus "YOU must be born again." Jesus would never say this because being born again is something God does at his own discretion and for his own purposes. Telling someone they must be born again is like giving someone an impossible task.

Suppose I say, "When walking off a cliff, you must flap your arms and float to the ground." You will say to me, "what have you been smoking?"

No, Jesus isn't saying "be born again". He is saying, "You want to spot those who have already been born again?" See how they respond to my ministry.

Grace be to you James. Thank you for your respectful response. The example you gave might be a helpful picture, but it isn't an example of sacramentalism. As you may already know, it is taught that a sacrament is something physical in this world whereby one gains access to the grace of God. For example, the act of Baptism is considered a sacrament because through baptism we are admitted to the faith.

I maintain that the only means to grace is the proper inwardness. The physical act of baptism does nothing. Inwardness is essential; baptism is incidental.

Do you disagree?

No, Jesus isn't saying "be born again". He is saying, "You want to spot those who have already been born again?" See how they respond to my ministry.
That's exactly what He was telling Nicodemus--Nicodemus had to be born again. That's what Nicodemus understood. That's why he said "Can I enter my mother's womb again?" He wanted to know how to do it. Yes Jesus corrects his misunderstanding on how it gets done but He really did mean he had to be born again.

No, Jesus wasn't saying "the born again respond to My ministry".
1) As has already been shown, 1 Corinthians and 1 John do not teach that.
2) You would have men born of God and "in Christ" before their sins have been removed (Hebrews argument).
3) He simply says "those who are of the truth hear My Voice" and "those with a good and honest heart bear fruit". Who did He say knew the truth in John? Who responded to His Gospel in the Synoptic Gospels? What is the definition of someone "of the truth"?
4} Also, as an aside, it sounds like you think being a child of God is something immutable when Scripture doesn't teach that Deuteronomy 32:5 "they are no longer His Children". Why? "They are corrupt". Hebrews 3 warns the heart can be hardened into an unbelieving heart by reason of sin (same reason He says people can "unbecome" His Children in Deuteronomy 32:5).

The very essence of the holy church!
Your constant reference to your church as being 'holy', just because the scripture says God's church is holy, catholic, and apostolic, is a figment of your imagination. And your use of scripture to defend the indefensible, is itself indefensible. No-ones buying it.

I wonder if these brick-n-mortar church believers will finally realize that their mind and body, of hands and feet will not get them into the Kingdom as the Harvest is drawing closer, each passing day? Their 'eyes' are still set on idols they created for their own destruction. No stone will be left in its place at the appointed time. Destruction is coming to 'their' world.

tradition is revelation from God

do you think it’s just made up stuff?

not against the word
Tradition and scripture are the word
The word is not limited to scripture

jn 20:21-23 he breathed on them
Received the HS
And power to forgive sin
Not elder but priests

Four Marks of the True Church founded by Jesus Christ on Peter, the apostles, and their successors!

One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!

The church is One:

Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Lk 1:32-33 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Mt 16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

John 10:16
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

John 17:17-23
that they may be one as we are one.

Romans 12:5
so we, who are many, are one body in Christ.

Rom 15:6

1 Corinthians 1:10
I appeal to you... that there be no dissensions among you, but that
you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

1 Corinthians 12:12
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13
by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.

1 Corinthians 12:20
But now are they many members, yet but one body.

Eph 1:10
That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

Ephesians 4:4
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Colossians 3:15
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were
called in the one body.

Philippians 1:27
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Philippians 2:2
be of same the mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of
one mind.

The church is Holy:

The church is Holy because Her founder is God, and Holy is His name.

She is the spotless bride of Christ.

1 Timothy 3:15
know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.

Colossians 1:18
And he [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church.

1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people
belonging to God... Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God.

Ephesians 2:19-22
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world

Jn 16:12-13
I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them
now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

2 cor 5:18
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us (the whole world) to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

World = Universal = Catholic

The church is Apostolic:

Matthew 16:18-10
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Luke 22:28-30
You [the apostles] are those who have continued with me in my trials; and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

John 15:16
You [the apostles] did not choose me, but I [Jesus] chose you and appointed
you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide...

Matthew 28:16,18-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee... And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.

John 20:21-23
Jesus said to them [the apostles] again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.

Ephesians 2:19-20
... but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.

Acts 1:
Matthias replaces Judas who had the ministry of apostle.

Heb 3:11 Acts 1:
Jesus is an apostle, the apostles are already in succession to Him, they in turn would have successors.

Acts 15:22
Acts 16:4
——————

Apostolic Succession pre-figured in the successors of Moses!

Mosaic covenant pre-figures apostolic succession with the successors of Moses, sitting in the chair (Greek cathedral) of Moses and Jesus Christ requires obedience of them.
(Mt 23) they had the keys of the kingdom and power to bind and loose!
This power and authority are given to Peter and the apostles and their successors in matt 16:18 and Matt 28:19 the great commission cannot be accomplished by the apostles alone, hence the need for their successors to continue to teach all nations, and baptize the disciples! Jn 4:1 Jesus requires obedience to Peter, the apostles and their successors who have the keys and the power to bind and loose!

Well how could "Peter's successor" be blessing idolatry (Pachamama)? Certainly Peter would not accept such blasphemy. The Holy Spirit tried to lead you all into truth and you rejected the leading preferring the lie of idolatry.
"He's not the real successor of Peter! He's false!" Yes we already know! We've been here for the longest time already! Welcome to the Protestant Party!

You seem stuck to your theology, unable to consider the text on its own. This is a major flaw in your hermeneutic that leads to misunderstanding.
