The Spirit of Elijah/Elias….A Double Portion

2 Kings 2:8-10 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

As the power of the Lord was with Moses when the Red Sea was divided allowing the Israelites to pass over on dry ground, so was it with Elijah when he and Elisha “were gone over.” Both Moses and Elijah, two prophets chosen by God, are examples of the man child of end times…as is Elisha.

Elijah tells today’s man child, as he told Elisha, regarding obtaining the double portion of his spirit…”if thou see me” then “shall be so unto thee,” but having this spirit is “a hard thing.” How could Elisha, or us today, literally see Elijah once he was taken?

He is seen with spiritual eyes. To see is to understand. To understand is to receive the spirit of prophecy...not to prophesy new things but to be given Divine inspiration to understand what is written.

Jesus taught of the “spirit of Elijah” when He spoke of John the Baptist….

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

John the Baptist is another example of the man child and there Jesus tells us the duty of the man child(ren). What of the “double portion” of the spirit of Elijah? Biblically the firstborn receives a “double portion.”

Deuteronomy 21:17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

Jeremiah 31:9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a Father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn.

Who the sons of Joseph are today, Ephraim and Manasseh, is another study in itself. However some, me included, see them as England and America. Another consideration is that Biblically, Ephraim often represents all ten of the lost tribes, the house of Israel. Why is it written that “Ephraim is My firstborn” and as such shall receive a double portion? In actuality Ephraim was the second born after Manasseh and his father Joseph, although the first son of Jacob/Israel’s second wife…was nevertheless…not the firstborn of Jacob

1 Chronicles 5:1-2 Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's.

So, it is Ephraim today who receives the birthright and shall receive the double portion as the firstborn/firstfruits. But…remember, “it is hard” to have this double portion and Christ tells us that many will be offended…but not all, not the firstfruits. They withstand tribulation as they follow Him but are not offended....

Matthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

Luke 7:23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me.

John 16:1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

Those that are not offended even when others hate them are His firstfruits, His virgins….

Isaiah 61:6-8 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them. For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

James 1:18 Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

The chosen few of the many called are the firstfruits in the latter days…first last
.

Matthew 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

The firstfruits receive the double portion…the double portion of the spirit of Elijah which is….

Hosea 6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Joel 2:23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for He hath given you the former rain moderately, and He will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first [month].

The “children of Zion,” are the firstfruits…those that shall receive a double portion. In the first of the last days they are given a double portion of rain, the former and the latter rain. Elijah told Elisha that he “asked a hard thing.” Does that mean it is hard to give or….difficult to receive for with it come great responsibilities?

In Exodus we find God’s Commandments, Judgments and Statutes…which must be adhered to. Among them He tells us….

Exodus 23:20-23 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for My name is in him. But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. For Mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.

23:24-25 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and He shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

The angel that keeps our way, I believe, is Michael. God tells us that His name “is in him.” Michael, meaning “Who is like God,” does have His name…God = El…Micha-el.

Michael “the archangel” [Jude 1:9], is one of the “chief princes” [Dan.10:13], called the “great prince which standeth for the children of thy people” in [Dan.12:1]. This great archangel guides us and speaks to us for we are to “obey his voice.” And…if not, then he has the power to “not pardon our transgressions!”

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

Are his angels the man child…fighting the dragon today as Michael guides them to confront God's enemies? Are they the firstfruits, the virgins, the very elect….those that shall be given a double portion of the spirit of Elijah in the last days?

Malachi 3:16-18 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name. And they shall be Mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.

4:3-6 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts. Remember ye the law of Moses My servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Those were the last words of the Old Testament

The spirit of Elijah the prophet, as was in John the Baptist, is what turns the hearts of the fathers in the latter days…..”And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” [Luke 1:17] As Elisha received a double portion…the man child in the latter days receives a double portion to turn the hearts....

You said.. 'how can we really see Elijah when he is taken?'

Spiritually if we can see the unseen, and see Christ and beleive in his power we can have his Spirit..
I think the situation with Elisha and Elijah was a situation of faith, and it is the same with us if you can see and beleive you can have his Spirit.
