There are scriptures that throw people off
You apparently are one of those people. You went off on a tangent when I suggested for you to sell everything you have, empty your bank and give it to the poor! A test of goodness that Christ gave ... "putting your money where your mouth is as the expression goes. Since it's so easy for you to be good, well go ahead and be perfect - do it.
You didn't think that applied to you? "Jesus told someone to do that, not me!"
So you went off giving excuses, diversions and talking about all the apparent contradictions in the Bible ... that just.ckmflkcts everyone!

Here we go ...
Be righteous...no one is righteous...be perfects as your Father in heaven...no one is perfect...no one that knows Christ, sins..."My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.".....He that commits sin is of the devil....If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness....The Bible never contradicts itself....the Bible constantly contradicts itself....I gave you the list and this is one of the reasons I gave you the list....it is a form of writing....a literary form....in other words written that way intentionally.
Rationalize your way out of it ... that's not GOOD. You are more like the rich man than you think and have the ability to help the poor. Since it's so easy to be good, until now, it's hard, you bumped up against a wall. So you come up with a boatload of excuses and diversions ... and the Bible, it's just a literary thing you know ... LOL

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Why?
Do you even know what that scripture means? It means you can only worship one master: God or mammon. The rich man has to relinquish and devalue his possessions and give them away before he can get into heaven.
The "eye of a needle" was a common phrase used for the entrance doorway into the city. It was shaped like an eye of a needle. It was only so high and rich people had their camels stacked and piled so high that they could not get in unless they removed all their load off the camel.

10 percent does not mean anything to Christians. You should financially support your church...you should participate in church activities....you should give to charity...you should give to your local food bank....10 percent does not mean anything....if you are rich...you can give 50 percent....if you are poor it may be just a penny....but the point is give that penny....it counts. There are so many ways you can support your church and support others that does not cost a penny....it counts. Give according to your means.
You know, people online can say anything - like they are good. Maybe they are, maybe not ... we don't really know them - so it is just talk. People like to pretend to be super-spiritual and theological giants. If they were, they would be busy actually doing something good.
Your family and friends, people you grew up with who have known you for years, know if you are good. Don't answer this question to me but ask yourself: Do they think you are a good person, kind, generous, joyful, faithful, patient, peaceful etc.
Or do they think you are just a talker, you talk the talk? "By their fruit you will know them."
Don't praise yourself and pat yourself on the back, let others praise you. This reminds me of the man who prayed to God and thanked Him that he was not like all the other sinners. He had pride. And then there was a sinner who prayed, with feelings of humility and unworthiness for forgiveness.

When Christ told the young man to give up everything, that was a specific conversation, for a specific reason...for that person. Today it is not that hard to be charitable..
It is easy to interpret scripture so that it cannot be applicable to you. That message was for him but it speaks to any and all people who value possessions and money over a relationship with God AND to be generous, charitable to the poor.

As far as me saying it is easy to be good. It is!
Yes, we know. And why do you think that is? You say you are obedient.
But to what, loving your neighbor AS YOURSELF? So every opportunity you have to help or give to your neighbor, you do AND additionally make an extra effort to make sure they are taken care of as you do yourself??? You must be the pride of your community, so loving and thoughtful ... Don't answer that, nobody here can verify if it was true. That is just a question for you.
But tell me Grailhunter, if you are in fact that good to your family, your neighbors, community, that must take lots of time out of your day right? I know good people like that, (servants), who spend all day long doing those things. But you have written 7000 elaborate posts, (some very lengthy), in just in a little over two years, not to mention the reading through tens of thousands more. That takes time.
My question is, for such a one who finds it easy to be good, where do you find time to do good deeds?

Oh, oh, oh, I get it, it just hit me. You are not really talking about being good to others, just not doing bad to others like in the scriptures you posted describing the sins. It is good to avoid sinning. But loving your neighbor as yourself is the next level of doing good.
It is easy if you are on your computer all day and not around people, not to sin against them. You are isolated. Avoiding sin is righteous behavior, but it is not loving your neighbor as yourself just because you think you did not hurt them. Maybe they are hurt because you ignored them.
Don't get me wrong, I am not the most generous nor am I filled with brotherly love, because it is not easy. But I never claimed that being good was easy. Actually I need to be more loving to my neighbor ... it's laziness and selfishness. Without God, we can do nothing good.
And to bring up a few more points you'be been pressing.
Why is it not easy to be good?
SIN
Goodness is actually holiness imparted by God. It is an attribute of God. To be holy can only happen when you have a personal relationship with Jesus. He is Holy because He is set apart from sin.
So the Holy Spirit sanctifies us (sets us apart from sin). We cannot make ourselves holy, only God can -gradually. SO NO ONE CAN TAKE THE CREDIT FOR BEING GOOD. We cooperate and obey to avoid sin but the good works - He prepares for us and in His strength we do them.
Yes we have moments of perfection. When He prepares us to do a good deed, help someone at the right moment and we provide that help. That is doing His will and for that moment, it was perfect. The prophets acted perfectly when God inspired them to write His Word down, word for word! Thay was perfect for that moment when they were filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit. When He moves us to do something, minister, witness and it is accomplished, that's perfection because it is God working in us.

Even a broke clock can get time right twice a day . But as far as following calvin and his tulip
my advice is , he should have kept those two lips of his closed . Its far easier to just learn the bible for ourselves
than to sit under folks who get some things right , but often things dead wrong as well .
Even the popes can get some things right , but you wont catch me learning from them either .
Amigo... I really wish you would've heeded my warning that this was a set up. It was to Grailhunter, but you fell for it.

Calvin did not develop the Tulip theory. If you read his works, you will see that he was far from that theory, especially how people view it today.

I have read Calvin. I know how and why the TULIP theory is credited to him. With that, its wrongly credited to him, but there are brief writings of his which led to it.

You you said Calvin should've kept his lips closed about tulip... Well, he did! You are basically making a false accusation about the man. He wrote some things (none of which were unique ideas) that led others to come up with tulip. THE PROBLEM IS he also wrote many things that go against the Tulip theory.

So I ask you Amigo... Have you read his work, or Augustine's?

I don't mind you being against Tulip... But it is a sore point of mine when people get it wrong and attribute it to Calvin.

For one being outgoing I know people. And I have always given to charity whether it CFC or United Way and I am always involved with church activates. I helped with the plays...setting up the props or just the guy with the palm leaf waving it as Christ passed in the play....or directing traffic.

It is not hard. During this Covid thing we keep taps on the elderly and the home bound. We have an elderly couple that drives around in a golf cart and they know a lot people and they tell us who needs groceries. There are three or four organization in the area that hand out food and I get with them and load up and deliver food. Part of it is just caring a little and keeping others in mind.

My question is, for such a one who finds it easy to be good, where do you find time to do good deeds?

You have to be kidding me. It is life. If you apply your Christianity as a walk with Christ....Christ will start counting on you and He will put people in your path that need help. He count on you because He knows what your are going to do.

One time I got stuck in a ice storm and pulled over in a hotel/restaurant and I had a powerful CB and I was running road conditions for the people in the restaurant. It turned a dangerous situation into having fun. Somebody paid for my meal and some else paid for my room. You do good as it comes.

Find the time? I was in Walmart and I was watching an elderly person trying to pay for mostly dog food and she came up short. And while digging in purse I could see the tears falling. So I talked to her into taking back the dog food and going back and do some shopping. By the time we were done she was laughing. She picked out a few things and I think it did not cost me much. FYI the dog food was for her to eat. And who knows how many prayers she had said for help.

I recently told the story about being sent out on Thanksgiving for something that was forgotten and met a couple sitting outside a closed grocery story. They told me that they had not eaten for two days...I took them down to Huddle House and gave the manage some money and told him to give them what they wanted....find the time...that is so silly.

Why is it not easy to be good?

That is the question I am bringing up.

Goodness is actually holiness imparted by God. It is an attribute of God. To be holy can only happen when you have a personal relationship with Jesus. He is Holy because He is set apart from sin.

Lets pull up a scripture for that

1st John 2:3
By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.

2nd Peter 1:8
For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1st John 2:4
The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;

If you know Christ and your beliefs are about walking with Him....you will get to know Him and He will rub off on you. And find the time? That just seems so odd to me! It is not hard for me to be good and it does not take much of my time to help people. A lot of it is just socializing and having a good time with people. People get so focused on themselves that they do not pay attention to what is going on around them.

SO NO ONE CAN TAKE THE CREDIT FOR BEING GOOD.
heresy
LOL Ya this sound like Calvinism.....some where between a heresy and out right blasphemy against God. LOL God is a monstrous puppet master but they are the elect of the puppet master....if it was not so sad it would be hilarious.

Well you put the pair together at least.....Calvin and Augustine were both seriously messed up. And then you have to include Thomas Aquinas...the three influenced Christianity in the most horrible ways. It is no secret that Calvinism got worse as it went along. Calvinism and the new social religions are the only beliefs that churches are guarding against their infiltration.

Oh, so you have read their works?

Yes...John Calvin stuff is in storage...had enough of that.
Have a few books on Augustine...his "works" The one I have right here is Confessions....The City of God....and on Christian doctrines.
698 pages.
And the one I have here on Thomas Aquinas is called the Basic writings of Thomas Aquinas. 1098 pages.

I have books on Christian history and of course all the main people are noted in them. I have 40,000 dollars invested in my library. So it will cover the topics.

I really like to stick to the facts and tell it is. But sometimes I have to lay traps and hate doing it. I have laid a few in tbis thread and I don't believe everyone has read Calvin like they lead to believe. Heck, I barely believe most Christians have read all the Bible.

Some writers are so vague in their writings that people tend to fill in the blanks and come up with a theology or criticism of their theology based on what they have read.

Some authors will write a short paragraph to summarize a whole chapter or even several Chapters. People read that and base their entire opinion of that author and hus philosophy on their limited understanding of what tbe author was getting at.

Wrong to do so...

There are several levels of study....studying what they were preaching and their personal history.
Like Martin Luther he did not have any intentions of starting denominations....his intent was to reform the Catholic Church and that did not go so well and then it all got away from him.

Do you need a law to tell you not to work your employees to the bone?

As manager of the little shop where I work, it's up to me to schedule people, and to approve absences and the like. I get a real joy out of working out a schedule that allows someone to visit their distant family, or to take their sister to the doctor. When we work a lot of overtime, I'll turn down jobs that would require what I feel to be overworking everyone, though we are a pretty tight team, and they'll go along with whatever I say.

Using love as my guide, I'll even schedule an extra shift on Saturday, for very grateful workers who really need the overtime. The Law would prevent me from loving them the best way I can. The Sabbath was for Isreal, to show a rest, that we would enter by faith in Christ.

Love tells me to do what I can to help providing for the needs of others.

Someone can say, Trust God, don't work on the Sabbath, and God will take care of your needs. I'm saying, I am trusting God, and He is providing. Would you prefer that I kept everyone home on the weekends? Only schedule weekend overtime on Sundays? Does that seem right?

Much love!

Doing any hiring?

You really cannot talk about sex on a Christian forum. We are coming out of a very insane time period. As it is now sex and nudity are dirty, nasty, and sinful and created by the devil!

Don't forget sex is full of STIs, broken condoms, and condoms that don't cover all of the infected skin. I can somewhat see why nobody really wants to talk about sex and its filth.

1 Tim.1:9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine
If this means faith does not have to uphold the law then that negates other scripture that says faith does uphold the law. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 will give you a clearer understanding of what Paul is driving at here.
Missing the point of Paul there?

“the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners,…”

What do you not understand there?

Just curious.

May I ask, what law was made for the lawless, ungodly and the sinner, for murders, etc., was Paul referring to?

Sabbaths, circumcision, Feasts...

1 Corinthians 5:7-8
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Now, Paul in scriptures say that the Christian is no longer under the law. What law would that be? Would that be those such as you cited (1 Corinthians 5:7-8 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)?

I answered that already. ↓↓↓
I was making sure if you refer to the Law of Moses or not.

Anyway, let me just move on to ask, what is your understanding when Paul says that the Christian is not under the Law but under grace?

Thanks for sharing the goodness in your life. We need to know if it is just talking the talking or actually walking the walk. I guess you find time - I wasn't judging, just curious. My wifebis a realnservant whi lives everyone more than herself. In fact, I het angey with her for motntaking caren of own needs, like her health. We are retured and she spends hours everyday in this kind if service. I huess God needed someone tontake care of her?
If what you say is true, you are a good guy and God works through you to do good works.
It is not heresy to give God the credit for what is good in your life, the blessings. It is heresy not to thank Him. We could do nothing without Him. Still, I sense some pride in there. You know you can't earn your way to heaven. Thinking that way is legalism.

That is the point....Ya talk da talk but do ya walk da walk.

We cannot earn our way to heaven, but we can do our way to hell.

Good is great, but my point is that it is not hard.

Pride....anything to criticize doing good. Protestantism has in a lot of ways has become a lazy man's religion. Religious correctness based on what you don't do. The ankle biters that cannot stand someone that does good....it is all sad in their life.
