Someone quoted Jesus saying "beware of the leaven of the pharisees" and I remembered this little essay I wrote several years ago and decided to post it here.

Beware of the fungus among us.

Matthew 16:5-12
5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Jesus warned the disciples to beware of the leaven or yeast of the religious leaders. Yeast according to Webster’s dictionary is a fungi or fungus. Jesus was calling the teachings of the religious leaders a fungus.

1Corinthians 5:6-8
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Paul’s warning is to be on guard, even a little or small amount of yeast will infect the whole.
Today’s Christianity offers a wide variety of beliefs that have conflicting and contrary teachings. This is evidence of what Paul stated in 1Cor. 5:6-8, the adding of yeast compromises the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What is the yeast of the Pharisees? The Pharisee’s yeast are the teachings and traditions of man.
Matthew 15:1-9
1 Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to interview Jesus. 2 “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old traditions?” they demanded. “They ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? 4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.’* 5 But you say, ‘You don’t need to honor your parents by caring for their needs if you give the money to God instead.’ 6 And so, by your own tradition, you nullify the direct commandment of God. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was prophesying about you when he said,
8 ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far away.
9 Their worship is a farce,
for they replace God’s commands with their own man-made teachings.’* ”

Standing back and looking at the Christian religion and all it’s beliefs and teachings as a whole, I would say it is infected with a fungus, a fungus called the yeast of the Pharisees.
So then, how do we fix it? We don’t, man has already made a mess of it. Then how do we get out of this mess? By following the Holy Spirit and not the traditions of man.

John 16:13-15
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me.

Jesus said if we want to be His disciples, that we MUST deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. There is no other way. The Holy Spirit is here to help us do just that, become disciples of Christ. Let’s decide today to heed Jesus’ warning and stop following the opinions, knowledge and traditions of man and from here on out, follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting and become partakers of the PURE unleavened bread, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I thought it would be cool to make a check list of the characteristics of the pharisees and the people who followed Jesus to see which we were more like... could be a fun practice... and also maybe shed some light on what we might need to change...

The leaven of the pharisees isn't people, it's doctrine and principles like hypocrisy, using God as a way to come up off people, etc...

Referencing the seven church ages...

http://www.christianityboard.com/topic/13598-the-seven-church-ages-per-gods-word/

We have the last four strongly represented here...

Ephesus... No Apostolics
Smyrna... No Martyrs
Pergamos... None Orthodox
Thyatira... Catholics
Sardis... Protestants
Philadelphians... Methodist / Pentecostals
Laodiceans... Charismatics

In which the Sardiseans surely show their colors in a post such as this.

Right.

But the specific doctrinal traditions of men the Pharisees had is what helped lead the Jews astray in refusing our Lord Jesus Christ. It is how they strayed from God's Word which they had possession of. Even before Israel's captivities for falling away, God's Holy Writ was left sitting on a shelf to collect dust, just as how some still treat It today.

The doctrines of the Pharisees specifically represent pagan ideology. It is pagan ideology that is behind the followers of Satan even from ancient times with pagan Rome, pagan Greece, pagan Egypt, Sumer, Babylon, Sodom and Gomorrah, Assyria, Moab, Edom, Canaan, India, etc.

When the "house of Judah" (tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi) were taken captive to Babylon for 70 years, Aramaic instead of Hebrew became their main language. The ancient form of Hebrew script even changed, and through pagan corruptions philosophical sage type writings loosely based on the Old Testament came forth in confusion, producing the Babylonian Talmud as their foundation instead. So Judah's Babylon captivity produced an era of confusion among the Jews, and it's still going on today among many of them, even with the practices of occult mysticism in their rabbinical teachings (Cabbalah). Those corruptions come from pagan ideology, from the esoterica of old among the ancient pagan nations.

And it started with the Canaanites that dwelt among Israel which they were not able to destroy per God's command when coming into the land (Judges 2 & 3).

This is why Apostle Paul said the spiritual war was not with the flesh and blood of man himself, but against "principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph.6:12). Those rulers of darkness involve that mess of pagan ideology which worships and follows Satan. Many of the high leaders in today's world are involved directly in that pagan ideology of old, thinking of themselves as little gods. I recall when one of the CEO's of Proctor And Gamble revealed himself as an occult pagan worshipper. When Christians proposed a boycott upon Proctor and Gamble products, that CEO said there weren't enough real Christians left in America to make a difference.

Isa 8:19-22
19 And when they shall say unto you, "Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter": should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
22 And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
(KJV)

Logo controversy
P&G's former logo originated in 1851 as a crude cross that barge workers on the Ohio River painted on cases of P&G star candles to identify them. P&G later altered this symbol into a trademark that showed a man in the moon overlooking 13 stars, said to commemorate the original 13 colonies.[sup][29][/sup]

Former P&G logo
The company received unwanted media publicity in the 1980s when rumors spread that the moon-and-stars logo was a satanic symbol. The accusation was based on a particular passage in the Bible, specifically Revelation 12:1, which states: "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of 12 stars." P&G's logo consisted of a man's face on the moon surrounded by 13 stars, and some claimed that the logo was a mockery of the heavenly symbol alluded to in the aforementioned verse, thus construing the logo to be satanic. Where the flowing beard meets the surrounding circle, three curls were said to be a mirror image of the number 666, or the reflected number of the beast. At the top and bottom, the hair curls in on itself, and was said to be the two horns like those of a ram that represented the false prophet.

These interpretations have been denied by company officials, and no evidence linking the company to the Church of Satan or any other occult organization has ever been presented. The company unsuccessfully sued Amway from 1995 to 2003 over rumors forwarded through a company voicemail system in 1995. In 2007 the company successfully sued individual Amway distributors for reviving and propagating the false rumors.[sup][30][/sup]

I remember hearing about the P&G logo and the accusations way back in 1980.

It was the same time I heard silly rumors such as the red trim on the Marlboro cigarette packs forming KKK because the money went to support the Klan
and the the letters from the rock group KISS stood for Knights In Satan's Service.

Lots of rumors out there.
Some may be true.
Some completely false,
In a number of cases the truth is somewhere in the middle.

That CEO (chief executive officer) of Proctor & Gamble admitted he was an occult pagan follower. No product symbology involved in the argument.

I agree, now shall we name some of those fungi?

Treating the Sunday as the Sabbath, referring to a building as God's house, teaching obedience to the tithe is still required by God, clergy/laity systems, to name a few.

We are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. - Acts 5:32

When we begin referring to God's truths as fungus the first person who will leave the scene is the Holy Ghost... I know too many people who have packed their minds for decades in so much that they have a mind as big as the great outdoors... And not a thing in the heart! Then the churches become dry as yesterdays toast and people begin justifying the evil... Which makes God himself sick to his stomach!

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. - Rev 3:16

-- That logo was in existance long before the CEO of Proctor & Gamble was even born.
