There are differnt points of view on this topic. Do you think there are differnt grades of sin, different punishments for different sins? Do you agree with the 'smaller and bigger sin' grading?

I find this a great topic to discuss the requirements of the faithful Christian. The Bible is clear that if we commit one transgression against the law of the 10 Commandments, then we are guilty of all.James 2:10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.And yet, Jesus specifically warns us that the one who knew not his master's will will be beaten with few stripes, where as the one who knew to do his master's will, and did not do it, will be beaten with many stripes.Luke 12:46The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. This plainly tells me that there will indeed come a day where many will say that they spoke in Jesus' name, and He will say depart from me, I never knew you.Matthew 7:22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. I think those that know His will and His way and don't do it are setting themselves up.

Actually, there is no grading of sin. All sins equals death. No smaller and no bigger.Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;It only take one single sin to fall short of the glory of the Most High God.Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.James 2:10 - For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. When a soul sins (since we are souls) it shall die. And all souls belong to Him.Ezekiel 18:4 - Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.Ezekiel 18:20 - The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.Let me remind you that If we hate God, then we love death.Proverbs 8:36 - But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate Me love death.Lovest thou in Christ Jesus (Yahshua) our Lord and Saviour.

I don't believe God classifies sin and puts them in order of how bad they are. No matter what sins we do or don't commit we are all sinners before God and unworthy to stand before Him justified. I thank God that He provided a way to do just that through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son.

RND took the verse I wished to post, so I'll add a different verse that I have thought about in connection with this topic.
KJV John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
This is Jesus while talking with Pilate. Something has been given to Pilate, so that obliquely reminds me of this other verse, but a different kind of thing given to a person, to teach:
KJV James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. {condemnation: or, judgment}
Here is a modern version of that verse for comparison:
NASB James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

I think the parable of the gold talents would be some what fitting as well. Matthew 25:14-30

I believe Jesus is expecting us to do our best but we still sin. I believe as we continue to do our best, we will be getting closer to sinless as time goes on. I dont believe as soon as we become part of God's kingdom we will be perfect. We will be continually doing our best to be loving and peaceful beings and if we are not progressing we will prerish even after we become part of God's kingdom.just my two cents:)

WEll, I agree iwth all of you in some degree, but why were there different punishments for different sins in Old Testament? Even God punished them more or less accordingly to commited sin. I know all sins lead to death, but are there more responsibilities for bigger sing?

God does not judge how bad of a sinner we are by what we do. Everyone is a sinner regardless. Yes, He does seem to hate some sins more than others, but that could only because He mentions certain sins--like lying. Those who have repented and turned to Christ will be in heaven. Those who don't--won't. I know that there are rewards given in heaven according to what we do for the Lord. For instance, there are five crowns, and not everyone will get every one of them. One is a martyr's crown. Most of us fortunately won't be a martyr for Christ. I have no idea if the heat in hell is hotter for "worse" sinners or not.

God doesn't hate 1 sin more than the other...He hates all sin. I know I had broken all the 10 commandments as a young child, as soon as I knew what it was like to Lie to my parents to avoid punishment. I Stole from people as a kid, because everyone had what I didn't have. Which also was covetness...I didn't honor my parents...I could go on but I am sure you get the picture. But, see, what is cool...We all were forgiven and given a clean slate once we proclaimed in our Hearts that Jesus is true and saved us...right?However, I know and realize that my judgement will be given to me and I am not afraid, because He is a graceful and merciful God...Don't try and get concerned about what your punishement will be prior to Jesus. Try to be transformed in the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2. Have a mind like Christ, and not think about your circumstances, or how bad you will be judged on the day of judgement. That isn't what God wants. Jesus, took our punishment. Our job now is to help those who don't know this, and help them turn from their evil ways, and stop rebelling against God...for sad but true, they have no clue what they are doing really. They are spiritually dead. Let us go out into all the nations and make fishers of men!!! Right..???? If we live as faithful servents now...don't you think our gracious Father is going to be more forgiving????? Amen Blessings to all

I am not refering to repented sin, or past of the 'now Christian' person. I was thinking of a non-christian person who did not repent and came before the Lord for judging. Will his lyfe-style / sins matter in what kind of punishment he will be condmned to? Are there differnt layers/parts of Hell with more/less torments?

You also have to take into fact that God takes hate as murder and lust as adultery. There is no scale.

Wouldn't this indicate that the "spirit" of the law is of greater weight than the actual letter written in stone? Thus the "spirit" is more important and hence a greater degree?

Perhaps consider these verses:
Matthew 11:21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 "Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
You could go with one of those passages about how the wicked will be repaid according to their deeds, but some might say it requires inference to say that the repayments are in fact different, and not all the same.

The thing is, you'll never be at a comfortable ground as to being holy. There will always be jobs to be done. People to witness to. And you'll be favored more by God if you devote your life to him. For example you become a missionary, and you build churches and give people the word of God. You look at them, and they always have something to do, being a Christian is a restless life. You see a lot of Americans that do believe in the word of God. And they think they are okay. But all they do as Christians is own fish bumper stickers and wear Jesus shirts. There is more to life then showing. It's doing.

Yeah, well I do things, and I still think it not enough. I am never at rest. There are things to learn, and things to do. What I really wish to do is study more about demons, angels, and hidden meanings in the Bible. I also wish to learn Greek and Hebrew so I could translate and study Biblical texts.
