35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
(Luke 22:35-36)

It's a fair question. I do own guns, I do have a permit to carry one concealed, and I have taken several training classes to learn how to use it. I have asked myself many times whether this is consistent with my commitment to follow Jesus. I'd rather be one of those blessed peacemakers, and I have Matthew 5:9 engraved on the back-plate of my SIG P365 to remind me of that.

BTW, the Powers-That-Be have a whole industry here in the States whose purpose is to make people afraid so that they'll buy guns. Afraid of immigrants and people of other races and nationalities. Afraid of street crime. Afraid of their own government.

Ok, so how do you feel about Christians who are in the police, or Christians who are in the army. If you do not believe that it is right for them to have guns it would need to apply across the board of ALL Christians.
So what are your views, based on what verses you have shared to what I have conveyed above.
I am just curious to know your views

I can understand a person's outrage after reading about such a tragedy and wanting to talk about gun laws. But I don't think the OP gave it much thought before branding everyone with a weapon as unchristian. That's going a bit far

Yes that's the verse I was trying to recall. Thanks

The person who started the thread is a fellow Brit and we do have a different outlook on gun laws. There are certain reasons which have been listed for which guns are okay but unlike the US, here in the UK ordinary people do not and are not allowed to have guns.

As Christians we should look to the Lord for our protection. Period!
Farmers probably need shot guns to kill vermin and members of gun clubs for their hobby but as a fellow Brit I don't think it's right that just anybody can just go and buy a gun. We have a completely different mindset where guns are concerned.

I'm Australian and I think we have similar gun laws and that's debatable.
My objection in the op was with branding everyone with a weapon as unchristian.

The laws vary from state to state. In my state, you need to apply for a permit to get a pistol or a revolver. That permit requires a criminal background check and involves having your medical history reviewed for mental illness and substance abuse. I don't have any experience with purchasing rifles or shotguns, but I understand the process is more lenient and involves just checking an on-line database at the point of sale.

The two shootings referenced in the OP were in New York and California, two of the states with the most restrictive firearms laws in the country. The laws were not effective.

Ezra had an Army on-call from the king but chose rather to fast and pray for God’s protection which God provided:

“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.” (Ezra 8:21-23)

“Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.” (Ezra 8:31)

Jesus agrees:

“Then said Jesus …Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” (Matthew 26:52)

Like I said. The OP hasn't thought this through very well to label every weapon owner as unchristian is really being unfairly judged.

There are many valid reasons to own a weapon. It's not a sin to own one nor is it a sin to use one legally for work, sport, hunting, defense, farming and such. Not every gun owner is a heartless animal. Very few are

From your response above I can only conclude that you do not believe Christians should ever use a weapon.
It’s something I know many Christians believe, I have never considered it wrong for Christians to be in the armed forces or police , or to defend themselves or others. That’s where I stand on the matter at this moment in time.
I have also seen the film Hacksaw Ridge, based on a true testimony of someone with the same view - it’s an amazing testimony………

Did Christ tell His Disciples to do what Peter did when the Romans came to arrest Him, to get their swords?
In all honesty Jesus knew his disciples were carrying swords, if he didn’t agree with them having them wouldn’t he have said something to all of them, he rebuked Peter for using it because it was an inappropriate action at that time. The disciples didn’t fully understand what needed to happen, all they saw were armed guards coming to arrest Jesus.
