AS IF.....?

AS IF.... means an extent or degree or something in opposition of a point.

The OP is a point of martial arts being a good thing to know...
A few are seemingly in opposition....AS IF...not a good thing to know.

“…we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds)” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4)

Self-defense is a carnal warfare.

And here’s more biblical wisdom:

“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11)

“There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.” (Psalms 33:16-20)

Well, one of my favorite pastors Jeff Durbin at apologia church is a blackbelt in five different disciplines. I dont practice martial arts myself, unless you count boxing. . . I enjoy the exercise and find its almost as good to zone out as doing dishes . ...[/USER]
@SERVANTedu So how long have you been boxing?

The problem is not necessarily with learning how to defend yourself. It is the religion/philosophy behind martial arts that can be a problem.

"The martial arts are ancient methods of self-defense that are traditionally based upon Eastern philosophies or religions, especially Taoism and Zen Buddhism.[15] Jujitsu, karate, kyudo, and kenpo are strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism. Tai Chi is influenced by Taoism and to a degree also by Buddhism. Aikido is related to Japanese Buddhism and is influenced by Shinto. One writer exploring the history of Ninjutsu ties its development to various Mahayana Buddhist religions.[16] There are also many Western offshoots of martial arts that carry an eclectic or novel approach and incorporate other religious traditions or practices."

Christianity is self defence so one is prepared against the workings of Satan.
If one sees a situation, it could be best to avoid such, like joining a Gang, getting into drugs, excess ? Gambling !
If you know what you are truly dealing with it helps, but ignorance maybe bliss, it's a septic tank !
One has to take on all that may consume you, dominate you ? understand what it is, then you have a better chance of avoiding such things.

There is always an art in the way one can use when dealing with anyone or thing. clashing can be futile, one maybe best to deal with a situation in other ways.
I went out to a town 3hr drive to a buddy of ours that lives out their, a party at another's house out their and old Radar was their drinking and as I walk down the back yard, Radar jumps up and say's, I hate that beep ! and stars trying running me down in front of everyone, HAHA ! Poor Radar. sadly he does not have the brains to deal with me, as he is only carnal. coming from a childish position. nevertheless we get on just fine in reality, he just has issues! he does like me in fact. he is a funny bastard, but mad as a cut snake. One learns that you have to try and make your own fun when you live out in the middle of nowhere.

I see nothing wrong with it. My Pastor is a former Martial Arts teacher. I myself am a former high school and briefly college wrestler (I know it isn't considered martial arts, but it is similar and I've used it at times for self defense).

One of the things he told me is that learning martial arts kept him calm in hostile situations and thus, out of physical fights. Knowing that he could get out kept him calm and out of physical confrontation.

ok i was going to put this in the morality forum but i thought i would try here first, should Christians use martial arts for self defense like karate, judo TKD? what are everyone's thoughts on this? i don't take martial arts classes but any opinions would be nice
I don't know much about martial arts. I have nothing against defending oneself, but the defense should be commensurate to the danger. In other words, I wouldn't take out a gun and shoot someone for pinching me on the arm.

Yes if one has the ability to deal with a situation and not get frighten and then loose your wits. such will give some idiot in the pack a chance to up the anti.
Many have boast to me that in a fight they get frightened and it's this that powers them. I on the other hand never have fear but become decisive.

Some would boast they carry a knife when out in the city ? but I would say, if one is willing to use a knife on someone, you had be better be prepared to wear it, because anyone who goes me with a knife could wear it directly as they bring it out.
