1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

Peter was a fisherman, who's brothers name was Andrew. Peters first name was Simon. Yeshua walking along the Sea of Galilee called both to follow him and they did. (Matthew 4:18-20)

Both of these brothers were Jewish. Yeshua also changed Simon (Peter), name when he confessed that Yeshua was the Christ. Which the Lord said "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hell/Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:16-20)

Peter is the writer of this Epistle, he identifies himself as an Apostle, greek word: apostolos - a delegate, specifically and an ambassador of the Gopsel; officially a commissioner of Christ. This would signify that Peter is an a commissioner of Christ, who had learned from the Lord Yeshua, and he had apostolic authority in that day in age.

1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

Here in the KJV, it reads to the strangers scattered,
In the NKJV, it reads to the pilgrims of the Dispersion.

The word here for pilgrims is:
parepidēmos

par-ep-id'-ay-mos

From G3844 and the base of G1927; an alien alongside, that is, a resident foreigner: - pilgrim, stranger.

There are some other scriptures from John 7:35, which talks about Jews who from time to time had been scattered among the Gentiles; Later with to Jews, so "scattered," who had professed or actually embraced, the Christian faith "the Dispersion" James 1:1. In the Septuagint of Israelites, "Scattered" and exiled, seen in here in the below verses.

Deu 28:25 “The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them; and you shall become troublesome to all the kingdoms of the earth.

Deu 30:4 If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you.

(And interesting context about gathering here above)

Nehemiah 1:9 but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.’

All of these scripture relate to scattering, and some seemingly gathering. It all relates to those in the shared scripture 1 Peter 1:1 - of those whom were scattered through the Dispora among the surround nations which were the Jewish people who were scattered aboard, living among the Gentile nations, and Peter is writing to encourage them, out there whom are scattered, just as James does writing to the twelve tribes scattered abroad.
1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

Peter, and apostle of Jesus Christ, to the (Jews who are scattered in Gentile nations) scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asian, and Bithynia.

Galatia - A province of Asia Minor - A couple of references:

Paul had met Timothy at this time (Acts 16:1-5) which they had went about teaching them what decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. Afterward they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia (Acts 16:6).

After Paul spending some time in Caesarea, he gone up an greets the church, he went down to Antioch, after he had spent some time there, he departed and went over the region of Galatia and Phrygia in order strengthening all the disciples (Acts 18:18-23.)

Paul writing to the Corinthians in his first letter wrote to them saying "Now concerning the collections for the saints, as I have given orders to the Churches of Galatia, so you must also do: (1 Corinthians 6:1-4).

Concerning Asia - A district of Asia Minor

At the day of Pentecost when everyone was able to hear their own nationality by the Holy Spirit one of those nationalities was Asia (Acts 2:9). Peter also had spoken on this day which was spoken up on that day speaking of the Prophet Joel, which as the initiation of the last days being upon them. (Acts 2:14-39)

Paul mentions in his first letter during his final notions: One being "The Churches of Asia greet you. Aquilla and Priscilla pretty you heartily in the LORD, with the church that is in their house. (1 Corinthians 16:19-24)

It seems to me some time had passed here, that there had been set up in a house perhaps there in Asia, which is most versions of the Bible are called Churches.

Churches and the greek word which it is translated from is
ekklēsia

114x: a popular assembly, Act 19:32; Act 19:39; Act 19:41; in NT the congregation of the children of Israel, Act 7:38; transferred to the Christian body, of which the congregation of Israel was a figure, the Church, 1Co 12:28; Col 1:18; a local portion of the Church, a local church, Rom 16:1; a Christian congregation, 1Co 14:4.

Which was simply put an assembly where people would gather together and meet, and it did not need to be always a "brick and mortar church" in which there are countless thousands created, and attended through out here in the country of America.

Paul mentions the trouble which he came to them in Asia saying in the 2nd letter of Corinthians; For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. (2 Corinthians 1:8-11) There was a lot of trouble going on when Paul had traveled in and out of that region of Asia, as you can see here.

Paul mentions Asia one more time in his second more personal letter to Timothy, who traveled with him, (2 Timothy 1:15) This you (Timothy) I know that all those in Asia turned away from me among whom are Phygellius, and Hermogenes.

The very last and final mention of Asia that I am aware of is in John the Apostles Revelation of Jesus Christ, which he was told to write to the seven churches of Asia which were in Asia Minor now called modern day Turkey. (Revelation 1:4)

Verse 2: 1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

The King James Version uses Elect here, however in the Literal translation, in the first verse it suggest Chosen sojourners. Either way let’s take a look at this word Elect.

eklektos

22x: chosen out, selected; in NT chosen as a recipient of special privilege, elect, Col 3:12; specially beloved, Luk 23:35; possessed of prime excellence, exalted, 1Ti 5:21; choice, precious, 1Pe 2:4; 1Pe 2:6.

So by implication, the ones whom Peter here is writing to, cited in the very first verse (1 Peter 1:1), have been chosen out, to be part of a special privilege, let’s look at some implications noted by Yeshua.

When the apostles wanted to know about the end of the Age (Matthew 24:1-3; Mark 13:1-4; Luke 21:1-7). He said to them, “And unless those days be shortened no flesh would be saved; but for the elect sake those days will be shortened” - Noticed Jesus had used the term elect here (Matthew 24:22) this is talking about the end of the Age to them in that time, in the Age they lived in which was the Age which was governed by material doings, such as the priesthood, animal sacrifices, genealogies, it was an Age were the Pharisees and Scribes who’s hearts were no were near to God, but their hearts were far from Him (Mark 7:6). The days of the coming destruction would come to pass shortly with-in a generation, and there is no getting around Jesus and his words (Matthew 24:34).

Therefore one has to think about this, was this really a calling of those chosen, elect who were living their lives to serve God when the Holy Spirit had dropped out, and the tribulations and sufferings grew worse and worse, was God going to save his people, and what is Jesus implying here by the days being shortened for the elects sake? To me it would mean that eventually in a generation worth of Time - which biblically 40 years understood - they were to be watching and waiting even through all the suffering, persecutions they were going through in their day in Age.

Let’s move forward and look at a few more scriptures dealing with Elect,

In the Gentile - Luke’s Gospel - Luke 18:7 in the Parable of the persistent widow, The Lord spoke and said “Hear what the unjust judge said, “And shall God not avenge His own Elect who cry out day and night to Him, though he bears long with them?

Again, think about the question before. Would not God avenge those who were mistreated and take them out of their problems? This passage spoke by the Lord in Luke, is similar to what happened with Moses and the Hebrews being led out of Egypt for they had cried out in which God had heard them (Exodus 3:7).

Paul mentions in his letter to the saints in Rome, in his letter to the Romans - who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies (Romans 8:33), also mentioned in the second personal letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 10) “Therefore I, Paul, endure all things for the sake of the Elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal Glory. Who are these elect? People in that day in age is who Paul was striving for.

[other passages to consider: Elect: 1Pe 2:9; Deu 7:6; Isa 65:9, Isa 65:22; Mat 24:22, Mat 24:24, Mat 24:31; Mar 13:20, Mar 13:22, Mar 13:27; Luk 18:7; Joh 15:16-19; Rom 8:29, Rom 8:33, Rom 11:2, Rom 11:5-7, Rom 11:28; Eph 1:4-5; Col 3:12; 2Ti 2:10; Tit 1:1; 2Jn 1:1, 2Jn 1:13]

Does this make God love you any less today? No I do not believe so, and he sees you as his Child, or Son and Daughter. He hears your cries just as much as he heard them however these people were going through immense struggle and persecution and were awaiting the great and dreadful day (Malachi 4:5).

To me personally these first century Christians should be payed homage for everything they had done, and endured, and went through. They Most certainly in a different class of field that us to day in my opinion, but that doesn't mean because we are not like them, that we are not made right with God. You are made right with God because of Yeshua and his Righteousness, and our only option it to build up our spiritual self by and through dying to our fleshly ways (not to say you can not do the things you enjoy, however we eventually will die in this life one day as many other countless number of people have).

Verse 2: 1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Having gone over what Elect means, we see that these people were elect/chosen out according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.

What does Foreknowledge mean? It is described as prognosis “a foreknowledge”, it used only of divine “fore knowledge,” Acts 2:23; 1 Peter1:2 - “Foreknowledge is one aspect of omniscience; it is implied in God’s warning, promises and predictions. See Acts 15:18. God’s “foreknowledge” involves His electing grace, but this does not preclude human will. “He “foreknows” the exercise of faith which brings salvation. The apostle Paul stresses especially the actual purpose of God rather than the ground of the purposes, see, Galatians 1:16; Ephesians 1:5,11. The divine counsels will ever be unthwartable. (Vines Dictionary)

So are there some promises found in the Bible that can be seen dealing with God’s foreknowledge?

God, spoke concerning his Son in Isaiah 42, deeming that when he was sent he would bring forth justification for the Gentiles, who would bring forth the spirit, who would be a light to the Gentiles, to bring those in prison out of prison, that the former things have come to pass ( to me : meaning all of the things which were prior the old covenant which would be fulfilled in Christ), and new things God would declare before they spring forth I tell you of them. (Isaiah 42:9). This is an instance of God’s foreknowledge, (Such as even seen in Revelation 13:8), talking about the book of life of the Lamb, slain before the foundation of the world.

The book of life is another topic, and it is first mentioned in Exodus 32:33 - This story relates to when the people seen Moses having been delayed started to worship a Golden Calf that they had made, in which the people had corrupted themselves, which would only pertain naturally to the people of Israel. They are the ones whom had sinned towards God, those without the Law had no law to live by and because of the people of Israel’s actions they had corrupted themselves by having worshipped idols, and What is left off being said by God is that Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin. - Thus Exodus 32:33 the first mention of God’s book, states that they will be blotted out those who sinned against Yahweh contextually.

Are there other promises that could be seen of God’s foreknowledge or Foreordained plan? Sure, I believe so.

Take in to account when God promised that Satan head would be “crushed”, or bruised in Genesis 3:15. Or when the Last days had appeared spoken of by Peter in Acts 2:16, or those who were foreknown to chose to come to faith in Pauls letter Romans 8:29, or the wisdom of God in mystery by Paul (2 Corinthians 2:7; Ephesians 1:5; or the promised Paul mentioned to Timothy, in his second letter (2 Timothy 1:9) speaking of them in that time period there then to be saved from the wrath which was coming according to John who testified to the Pharisees (Matthew 3:7; Luke 3:7), or when Paul writing to Titus ( Titus 1:2) and as mentioned before Revelation 13:8.

Are you starting to get a better description and understanding of God’s foreknowledge? My hope is so that you would because it is highly important to look and see about all these things to consider founded in the Bible itself, to take into account.

1Pe 1:2 according to [the] foreknowledge of God the Father, by [the] sanctification of the Spirit, to [the] obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you!

Moving forward in verse 2 of Peter, having gone over Elect, and the foreknowledge of God the Father, which we know understand this was all foreknew by God in which the chosen people of those chosen sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, are being written to by the Apostle Peter, whom was called out by Jesus along with his brother as he was going along the Sea of Galilee.

Peter goes on to state, by [the] sanctification of the Spirit, to [the] obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.

What does sanctification mean? These people here in these districts were sanctified believers by the Spirit. Which in their provinces they were separated to God, as elect and foreknown by God the Father, and this was indicated by the Spirit in which helped them in their lives as they went through persecution and suffering. Peter is writing to encourage them.

When Paul had came form Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the the church, in which he had claimed: he had taught them the whole counsel of God to them, that he was innocent of the blood of all men (whom he had spread this good news too). He tells them, that after his departure (he would know longer see them anymore) and that savage wolves will come in among you, no sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up and speak perverse things to you, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears. (Acts 20:17-31)

He then says this in Acts 20 verse 32 and now, I commend you, brothers, to God, and to the word of His grace, that is able to build up, and to give you an inheritance among all those sanctified.

As Paul had warned these elders at Ephesus, Peter is now doing the same thing, commending them to God and to the word of His grace, that is able to build up. (The word of his grace is able to build up), and to give you an inheritance among all of those sanctified.

Are we sanctified today? I believe today we too are able to be sanctified by the Holy Spirit in which we on part of our own selves make the choice to have faith and believe and are adopted Children of our Father whom we call out to, in which as a christian believer we have a new way of life lived by and through the Living Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ, who lives in us by the Holy Spirit, and even the Spirit of Christ that comes with dying with Him, being buried with Him, and being raised again with Him into newness of life where the former life become dead. Does this mean that we can’t do certain things? I personally believe what Paul stated that all things are lawful but not all things edify, so what you personally do is always between you and God, but it is good to remember that God now is with you, by and through the spirit which is obtained through faith in the death burial and resurrected Yeshua. Which this new creation is built up by God through the word of His grace now today.

1Pe 1:2 according to [the] foreknowledge of God the Father, by [the] sanctification of the Spirit, to [the] obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you!

Now that we have gotten Elect, Foreknowledge and Sanctification of the Spirit, let’s move on to [the] obedience, remember Peter is writing to a certain group of people here whom had been elect by the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctification of the Spirit,

Peter now goes on to explain to the Obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.

Obedience - Peter is writing to them to make obedient, and he explains here clearly in verse 22.

The Apostle Peter writes and says 22 Your souls having purified in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit to brotherly love unfeigned, out of a pure heart one another love ye earnestly,

Peter alludes to the Jewish people there in the scattered areas who are among the Gentiles, about their Souls (mind/will/emotions) having purified in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit to brotherly love unfeigned, out of a pure heart one another love ye earnestly

So this is what is is explaining to about that the sanctification of the Spirit would lead them, to what? Having their souls (washed and cleaned), in the obedience of the truth, by what? The Spirit, which leads to what? Brotherly love unfeigned, which is done out of a pure heart (clear conscious - clear mind) another love ye earnestly. So he is writing and encouraging them to have love for on another, forgive, and to lean and learn by the Spirit which God has given them by and through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son Yeshua Christ.

Paul also sites in his letter to the Romans about how they (the Apostles) did receive grace and apostleship, for obedience of faith among all the nations (at that time); in behalf of his name (Romans 1:5)

1Pe 1:2 according to [the] foreknowledge of God the Father, by [the] sanctification of the Spirit, to [the] obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you!

And finally the sprinkling of the blood of Yeshua Christ, this is an allusion to the use of the blood of sacrifices, appointed for Israel, typical of the sacrifice of Christ meaning that (a reminder of what Jesus had done for them on their behalf).

Grace and peace be multiplied to you, Peter writes an encouragement that in hopes to all of this good news, that Grace and peace be multiplied to you!
