Friendship with the world

James said at James 4:4, "Adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.”
An enemy of God is certainly no part of his religious organization. What, then, is friendship with the world? It has been explained as taking different forms, such as cultivating or becoming involved with bad associations. In addition, James focused on something very specific, wrong mental attitudes that lead to improper conduct.

It says at James 4:1-3, "From what source are there wars and from what source are there fights among you? Are they not from this source, namely, from your cravings for sensual pleasure that carry on a conflict in your members? You desire, and yet you do not have. You go on murdering and coveting, and yet you are not able to obtain. You go on fighting and waging war. You do not have because of your not asking. You do ask, and yet you do not receive, because you are asking for a wrong purpose, that you may expend it upon your cravings for sensual pleasure.” After writing these words James warned against friendship with the world.

Centuries after James died, false Christians waged war on and murdered one another in a literal sense. However, James was writing to first-century members of “the Israel of God,” who would be heavenly ‘priests and kings after their resurrection If they were faithful. (Revelation 20:6) They did not murder one another or kill one another in literal wars. So why did James speak of such things among Christians? Well, the apostle John called anyone hating his brother a manslayer. And Paul spoke of personality conflicts and feuds in the congregations as “fights” and “strife.” (Titus 3:9; 2 Timothy 2:14; 1 John 3:15-17) Along this same line, James apparently had in mind a failure to love fellow Christians. Among themselves, Christians were acting in a manner resembling the way those in the world often deal with one another.

Such things happen in Christian congregations, because of wrong attitudes, such as covetousness and “cravings for sensual pleasure.” Pride, jealousy, and ambition can also rupture the loving Christian fellowship in a congregation. (James 3:6, 14) Such attitudes make one a friend of the world and, so, an enemy of God. Anyone who harbor attitudes like these can't expect to remain a part of God’s organization.

Who can we blame if we find wrong thinking taking root in our heart? Satan? To a degree, yes. He is “the ruler of the authority of the air” of this world, in which such attitudes are widespread. (Ephesians 2:1, 2; Titus 2:12) Usually, though, the roots of wrong thinking lie in our own imperfect flesh. After warning against friendship with the world, James wrote: “Does it seem to you that the scripture says to no purpose: ‘It is with a tendency to envy that the spirit which has taken up residence within us keeps longing’?” (James 4:5) All of us have an inborn tendency to do wrong. (Genesis 8:21; Romans 7:18-20) We can, though, combat that tendency if we admit our weaknesses and rely on YHWH God's help to overcome them. James says: “The undeserved kindness which [God] gives is greater [than our inborn tendency to envy].” (James 4:6) Thanks to the help of God’s holy spirit and the support of faithful Christian brothers, and through the merit of Jesus’ ransom sacrifice, faithful Christians are not conquered by the weaknesses of their flesh. (Romans 7:24, 25) They are safe in God’s religious organization, friends of God, not of the world.

The Bible promises: “YHWH God himself will give strength indeed to his people. YHWH God himself will bless his people with peace.” (Psalm 29:11) If we are truly part of YHWH God's modern-day “nation,” his visible religious organization, we will share in the strength that he gives and enjoy the peace with which he blesses his people. True, Satan’s world is much bigger than YHWH God's visible rekigious organization, and Satan is much stronger than we are. But YHWH God is the Almighty. His Holy Spirit (active force) is invincible. His mighty angels too are united with us in serving God. So, despite the hatred that we face, we can stand firm. Like Jesus, we can conquer the world.(John 16:33; 1 John 4:4)

Good message.
Some of your "terms" are strange to my ears ... What is "YHWH God's visible religious organization"? I would say we are in God's family (or "not in God's family" for the tares sown among the wheat) ... but to everything prior to the first reference to "God’s religious organization", I say "Yes and Amen!"

I don't even disagree with the last paragraph, I am just wary of strange terms that others may not define as I would define them.
God bless you and "thank you" for a breath of fresh air in a "Let's kick Osteen-fest".

Some would say it's the True Church that has Jesus as the head and has YHWH God Holy Spirit. (active force)
However while YHWH God visible religious organization would include the remnant anointed members of the True Church that has Jesus Christ as it's head and has YHWH God Holy Spirit it would also include those other sheep Jesus spoke of in Matthew 25:31-40 who would help Jesus brothers, Jesus brothers are the joint heirs with Jesus, these will be kings, judges, and priests with Jesus in that heavenly Messianic kingdom. These other sheep that help Jesus brothers are the ones who will be the meek that inherit the earth.
The remnant of Jesus Christ spirit brothers are the True Church that has Jesus Christ as head and has YHWH God Holy Spirit. These other sheep are the meek who will inherit the earth because they helped Jesus spiritual brothers, who make up the True Church. Together they make up YHWH God visible religious organization on earth, during these last days we're living in.

"why the world hates Christians" ?
he never said why.

the world hates Christians because of Christ. not because we go around preaching clean living, moderation and abstinence.
there are atheists who preach clean living, moderation and abstinence. guess what Buddhism preaches. guess what Islam preaches.
ever meet a vegan? guess what they preach?

he didn't preach the cross. point me to the minute-mark where he started talking about the cross, what God did, what it means, how it's foreshadowed in the torah... ???

friend, it's no 'waste'
i listen to about 12-15 1-hour sermons a week. this guy, he's typical. this is an off-the-shelf standard sermon IMO.
i can summarize the whole thing in 14 words:

sin is bad
we need more preachers like me who say sin is bad

that's milk, friend.
"duh"

wake me up when he explains why the two birds are undivided in Genesis 15
sorry but i am not satisfied any longer with simplicity.

The Christ and Him crucified is not being preached on this forum either and it is the simplicity of the gospel that confounds the wise in their own deceit and conceit...

So this is a Joel Osteen bashing thread?

Great!

On the contrary, it is a bashing of Johann's thread.
I was "suspended" right after a comical two sentence liner with stunnedbygrace and wouldn't mind being suspended again.

There are many preachers who have a good Statement of Faith but deviate from Bible truth in their preaching and teaching.

Quoting from Got Questions: "The basic doctrine of Joel Osteen, as summarized on his church’s website, is orthodox enough: the inerrancy and inspiration of the Bible, the triune nature of God, and salvation by faith in Christ are all affirmed. The doctrinal problems come in other areas...

THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL
...Overarching all that Joel and Victoria Osteen teach is the prosperity gospel: God’s will is that we be blessed with material things, a view that contradicts 1 Timothy 6:6.

WORD-FAITH
Another problem in Osteen’s message is his promotion of name-it-claim-it or word-faith theology: “We have to conceive it on the inside before we’re ever going to receive it on the outside,” Osteen writes. “If you don’t think you can have something good, then you never will. The barrier is in your mind. . . . Your own wrong thinking can keep you from God’s best.

MODIFIED GOSPEL
More often than not, Osteen sounds like an inspirational life-coach, instead of a herald of the gospel. He often preaches about how people can improve their lives, be prosperous, and experience happiness. Noticeably absent in Osteen’s optimistic message is any mention of sin or repentance.

QUESTIONABLE THEOLOGY
In numerous interviews and writings, Osteen has failed to proclaim that Jesus is the only way to heaven. He has repeatedly refused to agree with the teachings of the Bible that certain behaviors are sinful. This is not a new convert being interviewed; it’s the leader of a church of tens of thousands. Osteen can’t bring himself to support fundamental doctrines of the faith he claims to preach. His words communicate relativism and demonstrate a profoundly poor understanding of the Bible...

...Osteen’s message is sweet, attractive, and pretty. It comes with the million-dollar smile, a heaping helping of the feel-goods, and all of the motivation of the best self-help gurus. That message is also hollow, weak, and devoid of any real value. The most important parts of the gospel are left out, supposedly to broaden his ministry’s appeal. Anyone depending on that message, without recognizing what’s missing, is going to find himself spiritually hungry, frustrated, and in dire straits when a real disaster strikes."
Better be careful, you might be banned or suspended for speaking the truth.

no one here is preaching that we should sin.
Most here have already attained absolute sinless perfection, not capable of committing an act of sin.
Scripture quotations are used our of context.
Next.
Wonder how the new owner/family man believes.

Properly preaching the Cross is telling people Jesus died to give us both pardon for sin and power to obey. Contrary to popular antinomianists rhetoric, obedience or the lack thereof has never nor will ever be a means to and end, but is merely the outward evidence of our inward spiritual condition (1 John 2:3-4 KJV).
What is the entole/nomoi, the Imperatives?

THE PURPOSE OF THE CROSS

1. SUBSTITUTION

********************

Through the cross, Christ died as our substitute taking the punishment of our sins.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

ISAIAH 53:5-6

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are

healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 PETER 3:18

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,

2. ATONEMENT - COMPENSATION

***************************************

Through the cross , Christ has made an atonement for our sins.He paid the compensation for our sins.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

1 JOHN 2:2

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

HEBREWS 10:8-10

First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made).

Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second.

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

HEBREWS 2:17

For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

3. PROPITIATION

*******************

Through the cross ,Christ has appeased the wrath of God against sin by taking it upon Himself as a propitiation.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

ROMANS 5:9

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

4. RECONCILIATION

********************

Through the cross , Christ has reconciled us to God and restored our relationship with Him.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

ROMANS 5:10-11

For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

COLOSSIANS 1:21-22

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation

2 CORINTHIANS 5: 18-20

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.

5.REDEMPTION

*****************

Through the cross , Christ has paid the ransom for us and redeemed us from the devil.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

HEBREWS 9:12

He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

MATTHEW 20:28

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

6. JUSTIFICATION

********************

Through the cross , Christ has justified us and has not only forgiven our sins but has also made us righteous in the sight of God

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

ROMANS 5:1-2

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

TITUS : 3:4-7

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,

he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,

so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

7. ADOPTION

********************

Through the cross , Christ has adopted us as children in the family of God and made us joint-heirs with Him.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

*************************

GALATIANS 4:4-5

But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,

to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

EPHESIANS 1:5

he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

ROMANS 8;15-17

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs ,heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

JOHN 1:12

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God'”

This is a free speech forum. However I should have sent a copy of that post to Osteen.
I was banned brother, and probably going to get banned again for speaking the truth as it stands written in scriptures.
This is not a "free speech forum"
