When Jesus said, “there is none good but one, that is, God.” did He mean nobody could be good?

@EloyCraft

Psalms 16:2 cmp Psalms 16:10 (God's Holy One)

Do you understand?
I understand you're projecting. That you need to open your heart to Jesus. Jesus didn't inherit death like you and I. Jesus wouldn't have died if we didn't kill Him. He CHOSE to die .We can't choose to die. That's why His death is a Sacrifice.
Jesus came down from heaven. If that were not true He wouldn't be able to return. Your Jesus has no power to save.

None Good!!!” - no, not one! not even the Lord Jesus Christ would dare to place himself along side God as there is only One single source of Goodness and that is God.
Jesus asked why the man called Him good. He didn't deny it. He used this incident to sublimely hint at His divinity. As it wasn't something He could just come out and say. The Jews got the hint. Don't know why you don't.

And why do you suppose he couldn’t say he was God?

People say it unreservedly these days.

What are the consequences of Jesus announcing he’s God?

Especially when some tie this in with salvation?

Stop running :running:and receive!
Why wouldn't Jesus accept the title of Good Teacher?
Why would Jesus state openly that no one is good but God?
None, no one, not a single being besides Yahweh has inherent Goodness and Mark 10:18 proves that among many other passages.
Don't respond with special pleading give me Scriptural substance! Romans 3:10 cmp Psalms 14:1-3
Be still Eloycraft and accept the engrafted Word.

Jesus is saying/ drawing his attention to, you are calling me God.

Yes, this is true. If somebody is paying attention, they would know that Jesus says at another point, “I am the good shepherd:” (John 10:11). But the question I was asking as a part of the OP is whether or not we can be good based on what Jesus said. I believe we can be good but it is only allowing the goodness of God to work through us to make that possible. So I believe Jesus was saying that nobody on their own power alone without God can be good. I believe that is what Jesus was primarily saying here. Yes, in a backhanded way He was also saying He was God, too. But I believe his primary message was on how God alone does good. The focus of his message was on doing good (even based on the context).

This is not really the point of the thread. If you want to deny the Bible’s teaching that Jesus is God, start another thread.
Please do not derail my thread with your off topic unbiblical discussion.
The point of the thread is ultimately on whether or not we as believers can be good or not based on what Jesus said.

The point is this.
Christians say they want to "know" Jesus and the only way to get to know him is to understand his mind...what was he thinking when he said Mark 10:18.

Let me ask you a question.

Do you care (at all) that Jesus was quoting Psalms 16:2? Do you care to know why he was quoting Psalms 16:2? If you wanted to know the true Jesus and what he represents then you would say a resounding yes - But no, Eloycraft gives this thread lip service because they are not interested in the thinking of Christ, they only want to discuss their own wisdom and musings and certainly dont want the Spirit in Christ to lead them to Psalms 16.

If the title of the OP leads you to understand that all God's created beings give Him Glory, including Christ, then the answer is of course, no, we dont have any goodness at all without God's goodness in our lives. Jesus said he can do nothing without the Father. Romans 3:10 cmp Psalms 14:1-3 is also teaching you all that no one has righteousness of their own - Christ is our righteousness. 1 Corinthians 1:30 taken from Jeremiah 9:24.

Christians boast about being led by he Spirit but it's clear to all reading this that that is simply a lie because they want to be led by the wisdom of this world and all its philosophies.

I will leave you with this final thought.

Jesus in stating to the zealous young man, "dont call me good" and then emphatically stating "God alone is good"

In Mark 10:20 Did the young man learn his lesson from Jesus in relation to calling him good?

I'll step it out for you so it's not missed!

Mark 10:17 Now as Jesus was starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, •fell on his knees, and said, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
Mark 10:20 •The man said to him, “Teacher, I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws since my youth

Did the young man learn that simple Sunday School lesson of Psalms 16:2?

Did he learn that only God possess inherent Goodness?

He did!

People like @EloyCraft dont even get to this point because of their ignorance and unwillingness to allow the Word of God to lead them into truth.

Dont follow their example but look at the young man who at least showed a hint of promise that he might go away and sell all that he has in giving all Glory to God through Jesus Christ.

I strive not to indulge in foolish talk against what is so strongly against the Scriptures of truth (Especially when it is disruptive).
My OP discussion has nothing to do with your unbiblical words here.
Please start another thread if you want to deny how Jesus is God.
That’s not the OP discussion here.

I already made my case for how Jesus is God in this thread here:

Defending the Godhead (Trinity) & the Divine Nature of Christ

But I am not honestly interested in debating this topic with you because I have already made my case and have discussed it many times before.

So you cant speak to Psalms 16:2 either wow willing ignorance is on display in this thread!
What's wrong with you Highlighter?
The Lord is leading you into truth and you want to run from it?
I couldn't care less what you think you have proved in that link - you cant even reach the understanding of this young man in Mark 10:18, so how on earth can you define the Godhead?
If you can't acknowledge Jesus is quoting Psalms 16:2 and let alone speak to that Psalm what good is your OP?
You might as well start an OP on a best selling novel.
Sad to see how far Christians have fallen.

Avoidance = disappointment!

Look, friend. The door swings both ways. Go right ahead and look at the verses I posted in the thread and the points I made. That can also be avoidance, as well. But I am not debating it because I have done so too many times already. I already made my case and I stand by it with Scripture.

It's not about debating the doctrine of the Trinity it's about entering the Word of God and allowing it to lead you to truth. If you dont want to learn from Christ that's your prerogative but the young mans example is he dropped the use of "good" when asking him a second question because he learned the lesson.
It's clear you dont want to learn and if this is true and acknowledged what more can be said?

While Jesus was in the flesh (as we are) he had no goodness besides that of his Maker! Psalms 16:2 cmp Mark 10:18

You either accept it or stumble over it...your choice!

In addition to what has been already proven we might ask why did the Lord did not allow the title "good master" pass? It sounds like a respectful way to address the Lord no?

It shows if our understanding of Christ is in error he will deal with that error first before going on to teach the mans problem's. If you dear Christian have a wrong understanding of Christ, or mans condition for that matter, the Lord will deal with your error as it would be remiss of him to allow you to continue in that error because truth is important to the Lord.

Until that error was resolved Jesus' and God's status were not clear and so the basis of Jesus' comments would not be understood. The man had fallen into the trap that many fall into today. He was interested in the opinion of a man. Jesus focused his attention on what God had said rather than just giving another man's opinion.

If this forum is merely interested in man's opinion's maybe we should change the name of the forum? Christianity board implies we are interested in Christ's teaching? Yes?

"No man can serve two masters..." (Matthew 6:24) vs "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21)

Again its our choice who we want to follow and serve?

From my perspective the two interactions I have had suggest Caesar.

How about if somebody barged into your room late at night and they started preaching things you already know the truth about and you did not care to hear. That’s kind of what your doing here. They are coming into a place that they are not welcome and they are arguing something you don’t want to talk about because you know that truth fully and you don’t want to debate it because for you it is silly to keep debating it (Because you have been down that road before too many times already). The thread OP is not about the topic you are discussing. Start another thread if you want to talk about your topic of interest. I am honestly not interested in debating with you at this time on this topic. I am too busy with other Bible discussions and other life situations to debate such a thing that I find to be basic Christianity 101. I don’t need to be convinced. I am already convinced of the truth of what the Bible says about God being triune and Jesus being God. If you are not convinced, then check out my thread. If it does not convince you… then I cannot help you. Only God can help you then.

When Jesus said, “there is none good but one, that is, God.” in Mark 10:18, did He mean that nobody could later be good?

Important Note:

I have an answer to this question, but I am merely asking publicly to see what other believers have to say (and not because I don’t have an answer). I am also redirecting this topic from another thread so as not to derail that one.
Hmm is this a contradiction?

Mark 10:18
And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except God alone.

John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Not at all. Jesus is not saying He is not good in Mark 10:18.

Hebrews 7:26 says this about Jesus:

“For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless,
undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;”
(Hebrews 7:26).
