We have a multi-billion dollar advertising and marketing industry whose very reason for existence is to generate cravings in our hearts for other people's stuff.

Of course, I want you guys to crave the products my employer sells 'cuz I need this job or my family doesn't have food on the table or a roof over their heads. :D

(I need to repent of my hypocrisy too.)
We live where and when we live. We don't have lots of options in society. I thought the commune movement of the 60s was an attempt to find an alternative, but most weren't based upon Christian principles.
God's mercy and grace are available to everyone, because everyone needs them.
I find what scripture says about "merchants" and trading in scripture revealing. It makes for an interesting word study.

Here's one significant passage:
“You were blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until unrighteousness was found in you.
“By the abundance of your trade
You were internally filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire."
Ezekiel 28:15-16

I sort of wanted to know when it's okay to buy what you want, and when it's not okay.
I think understanding and prioritising need and want is something each individual needs to work out themselves.

Coveting isn't simply wanting something you don't have. It's not wrong to want something like a new car or better clothes. Coveting is having an unlawful desire to possess something to the point where it becomes the central focus of their life, and it usually leads to committing other sins.

Some biblical examples of coveting would be Lucifer starting a rebellion to acquire God's position, David plotting to have Uriah killed to get his wife, and the rich man in Matt. 19 who wasn't willing to part with his wealth.

Recently, I stopped going on Pinterest because I always end up wanting fashion items I don't need and can't afford.

Is coveting just wanting something you don't have and not being content or is it wanting something that belongs to someone else?

Biblically, it means to desire, but negatively to lust for something that belongs to someone else. See Exodus 20; Dueteronomy 5.

Satan was first in the sin of coveting, because he coveted God's Throne for himself. That is how Satan originally rebelled and fell from Heaven (see Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28).

@Enoch111 said, Coveting is lusting after, having an unlawful desire
It can include that but that is more of a desire to sin. Sexual desire is not a sin, just when it is inappropriate.

Covid....want....like a lot! Got'ah be careful what you wish for! LOL

The Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil.....not all evil.

Want can be the motivation for sin, "I said can be." You wanting nice cloths is not a sin. Pick out some nice cloths and put some money back for it. Planning not impulse buying.

But it is important to understand that "want" as a category is something you need to be concerned about, but it is not coveting.
It is the extreme intensity and fixation of want that is coveting and then what does it lead to. What will you do to get what you want? This is the carrot that Satan uses against you. He will get you what you want, but what have you done to get it.

Got to be careful about what you want because it reflects your character....for good or for bad. Want is one of the most motivating factors in or lives. Want will even define our lives.

We work to have a nice house and cars that will accommodate or families. That is not coveting. The guy that neglects his family so he can buy a Corvette, is coveting. The guy that has his family needs all met, and buys a Corvette is not coveting. To want is not a sin but you have to be careful to think of things as a whole and consider the intensity.

They say cloths make the man, will it makes the woman too. When I was married I dressed my wife and kids up like dolls. Did they want that? Yes, but it was what I wanted too, it brought me joy. I dress to extremes either jeans and shirt or uniform or a suit. We can keep ourselves and our kids in nice and neat clothes without spending a fortune....and it is important, it really is....what is the alternative?

So just be careful about what you want and how much you want it.
