We live where and when we live. We don't have lots of options in society. I thought the commune movement of the 60s was an attempt to find an alternative, but most weren't based upon Christian principles.We have a multi-billion dollar advertising and marketing industry whose very reason for existence is to generate cravings in our hearts for other people's stuff.
Of course, I want you guys to crave the products my employer sells 'cuz I need this job or my family doesn't have food on the table or a roof over their heads.
(I need to repent of my hypocrisy too.)
God's mercy and grace are available to everyone, because everyone needs them.
I find what scripture says about "merchants" and trading in scripture revealing. It makes for an interesting word study.
Here's one significant passage:
“You were blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until unrighteousness was found in you.
“By the abundance of your trade
You were internally filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire."
Ezekiel 28:15-16
