I just bought some highlighters (yellow) to help me locate scriptures that I want to remember. Because it can't be undone, before I do any marking I wanted to poll you guys that have done it or reasons why you won't do it.

I guess it would depend on how many scriptures you've marked. I've seen relatives bibles look like an art project. As much as I love art, I can't help but think it would be hard to ignore that and focus when reading at length.

Helpful or distracting?
Do you color code or mark in the same color?

What say ye?

What type of paper is your Bible made from? Markers will bleed through thin paper making the opposing page hard to read. I think it's better to use color ink or pencils.

For whatever reason, I wasn't thinking about that when I bought the highlighter. I just tested it on a page though and it doesn't bleed through enough to really notice, which is probably due to the light yellow color. Colored pencils will probably work nicely, will have to pick some up.

Thanks, tomwebster :)

I instead write small notes in the side margins, use asteriks, etc.

There was a time I marked A LOT. It wasn't long before most of my Bible was marked up.

Later, I found that through deeper study, and as I grew in the Lord, I would get different insight into some of the verses so I started over. Now, I keep notes in a notebook and as Veteran does, make small notes, sometimes with symbols (!*) in the side margin.

Sounds much better than what I was gonna do (scribble over the verses , lol). Less is more..got it.

Thanks Veteran and Gypsy :)

Be careful to buy highlighters that say they do not bleed through the page and you are fine. I also write in the margins and date what the Lord has shown me there. I also keep a notebook handy. You end up with many notebooks over time, but they are basically spiritual journals, aren't they? All good!

Will have to add a notebook to the list to summarize some of these lengthy books.

Thanks, Lively :)

Or you could just get some good Bible study software...

There's several, but I've gotten used to BibleSoft's PC Study Bible. It has a study notes feature also, just have to remember to save it to a flash drive, etc., if you ever reformat your hard drives.

I own many different versions of the Bible. I bought the one I mark up at a used store - it has a torn paper cover and thick pages - great for study.

I was thinking about going that route. The one I have was given to me by my grandpa (a pastor) several years ago and is a little weathered. It has some sentimental value but I wouldn't mind using it for reference. I will probably end up buying another one, just to have.

I may just do a combination of all of the above. Always nice to have options.

Thanks Aspen and everyone else who replied in here. :)
