This is an interesting notion I stumbled upon a while ago... gentilies (non-Jews) do NOT have to tithe! Huh?! Read on... The Apostles, the elders and the brethren in Jerusalem wrote the Gentiles saying, "We have heard that certain people which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised, AND KEEP THE LAW; to whom we gave NO SUCH COMMANDMENT. ..."for it seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: Abstain from meats offered to idols and tasting blood and from eating the meat of animals that have been strangled and from sexual impurity. If you keep yourselves from these things, you will do well." Acts 15: 24-29" SourceSo, what do you think...gentiles: tithe or no tithe?? LyteFull version from the KJV is below. 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, [Ye must] be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no [such] commandment: 15:25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 15:26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15:27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell [you] the same things by mouth. 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

The idea that gentiles do not have to tithe is mistaken. As I always harp on, you absolutely have to look at the context. Here is the response of the Apostles to the Jewish-Christian idea that you must be circumcized and follow the ordinances given forth in the OT. This is simply not the case. Christ's death on the cross proves this. That being said, the entire message was that of Faith. Jesus died on the cross because the law had been broken down into meaningless traditions. Here, the Apostles are simply saying don't worry about those traditions that you are being told you must perform such as physical circumcision and following every precept like a "good Jew."

Yeah but.... what's written is... "abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well." At that time, tithing was something only Jews observed and the writer is clearly saying that the new (gentile) Christians didn't have to become Jews or observe Jewish law. Lytep.s. I'm kinda playing "devil's" advocate here.

Well let me play a little devil's advocate here as well. Follow the logic for a moment. If this means that we cannot tithe amongst other things then surely it means that we do not have to follow anything given to us in the OT. Right here we are given things to abstain from "abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood" and there's nothing about tithing here.Clearly from the teachings of Jesus, he did not come to destroy all of the law.Matthew 5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.By the way, let me point out that this indivual apparently isn't too familiar with the Bible:Matthew 6:1-4Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.alms = tithesAre tithes something that you should give? Well yes and no. We as Christians should desire to give a tithe. I must point out that a tithe isn't always necessarily money, either.

I agree with Swampfox here about keeping things in context its key to understanding the Bible this is where people and relgions go astray context and types are essentuial to understanding the bible. As far as Titheing goes in times past you were told to leave the 10% of the outer edge of your fields unharvested for the poor to gather for food in thosedays there wasnt a welfare or government systems to feed and care for the poor as civilation advanced and changed this duty fell to the churchs to feed the poor so you were to give 10% to them for this purpose but even by Jesus's time the churchs were already corupted in their greed which is why he overturned the their money tables.Today the whole system and its purpose are corupted so the best rule to follow is tithe where you feel you are taught or where you feel good works are being done. Its basically a sin to tithe where Gods word is being preverted its called working for the beast.

You're quite right! We should give (money or other stuff) because we WANT to, not because we have to. Lyte

God doesn't want your money; he just wants to be Lord of your life. Do you want to be in charge of your finances or do you want God to be? For me, I am terrible with money. Since I have started tithing, I have been getting better with budgeting my money and not using credit so much. I have a long ways to go but I am getting better. Also, I learned that if you do not write a check to the Lord as soon as you get your paycheck, chances are there will not be enough left after you pay bills. If I write a check to God (it's His money anyways) first thing, I always seem to have enough to pay bills. And if we run out of money, it's because I did not budget well enough. Trust God in this! In Malachi, God tells us to test Him! No where else in scripture does God say this! In fact, He tells us not to put Him to the test...Except in this! Does this mean you will get a big fat check in the mail if you do tithe? Maybe, maybe not. All He says is we will be guaranteed a blessing. For me, it may be financial freedom. I would rather have that then all the money in the world. Malachi 3:6-176 "I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. 7 Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD Almighty. "But you ask, 'How are we to return?' 8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. 12 "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty. 13 "You have said harsh things against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?' 14 "You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.' " 16 Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17 "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. [a] I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not
