Thank God this isn't literal because the whole world would be one giant, gory horror film if it was.
I think Jesus is (verbally) illustrating the seriousness and finality of hell. Much like the way God paints a verbal picture of Heaven here:
1 Corinthians 2:9
[sup]9[/sup] However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[sup][a][/sup]—
the things God has prepared for those who love him..
In other words, Hell is so serious, awful and hopeless, that not even going through this short life as an amputee (if that was a "cure" for sinning) would compare to eternity in hell. The temporary pleasures of sins aren't worth the eternal damnation they lead to.
Likewise, no trial or amount of suffering on earth compares to what God has in store for us, in Heaven, for us that love Him.
