Tongues of Fire
“Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them are without meaning” (1Corinthians 14:10)
1. Unknown Tongues
Heavenly Language: The heavenly tongues are tongues of praise and adoration to God. The heavenly language is given to believers by the Holy Spirit at the point of receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost. These tongues are usually known as the initial evidence tongues given when the person is baptized or filled with the Holy Spirit. These tongues are utilized by the believer in their Christian walk in their daily worship and praise to God. (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:46, Acts 19:6, 1 Corinthians 14:2 & 16, 1 Corinthians 13:1)
Prayer Language: The prayer language are tongues of prayer and intercession to God. These tongues are guided by the Holy Spirit and are understood by God. The Holy Spirit will lead a person to “intercede” or pray in the Spirit for a particular or general circumstances, individuals, groups, problems, etc. that the believer may or may not know of. This language allows the Holy Spirit to make intercession and petitions for the believer. (1 Corinthians 14:13-15, Romans 8:26, Ephesians 6:18)
Prophetic Tongues: Prophetic tongues are tongues uttered by the speaker in an heavenly language but with a prophetic message with it. Prophetic tongues should be interpreted at all times. Prophetic tongues uttered in a worship service should be interpreted by an interpreter, the speaker, and or any individual filled with the Holy Spirit to whom was given an interpretation. Prophetic tongues are interpreted not translated. The message may be one of rebuke, encouragement, judgement, praise, etc. the church should apply the message as needed in the congregation. All other tongues should cease while there is a prophetic tongues being uttered and until after the interpretation is given! (1 Corinthians 14:18-39 & 1-17)
2. Known Tongues
Diverse Human Languages: Diverse Human Languages are tongues given by the Holy Spirit to a believer to speak in foreign languages not formally learned by the speaker. These tongues are understood by the people of that language which the tongue is directed. These tongues could be tongues of praise, exhortation, judgement, prophecy, etc. (Acts 2:4, Isaiah 28:11)
Learned Human Languages: Languages formally learned by the believer. Learning a new language can greatly help a person in ministry and in witnessing. Being bilingual should be a desire for all of God’s people. Breaking the language barrier is the key to effective communication of the gospel to all people. (Acts 1:8)
