We know that false prophets will be around in the last days because Jesus warned us about them. So what should we be looking for to help us identify them?

It seems to me that many Christians underestimate the cunning ability of the Devil and his prophets. For instance, focusing only on doctrinal error, rather than redefining evil as good. Our faith teaches us that everything is from God and that we can do nothing to earn our salvation, yet our culture teaches us that materialism and consumerism is good for the economy and the poor deserve their lot because they are lazy - to believe otherwise is to be anti-American and somehow less Christian!

All cynicism, sarcasm, self-righteous indignation, mocking, scoffing, and all other efforts to dehumanize other people are tools of the enemy and define the behavior of all principalities, both spiritual and in the form of worldly institutions. Even the church and Christians can fall into the same behavior of these principalities whenever they decide to dehumanize another person or group for whatever reason. Don't be fooled! Dehumanizing people is not the same as disciplining or correcting or even rebuking - the difference is the absence of love. It is crazy that the enemy has actually replaced righteous, loving, Godly correction with evil and convinced us it is good for us! Jesus knew differently - Luke 11:11

Furthermore, just because you can recognize the difference between Mormon doctrine and orthodoxy does nothing to protect you from false prophets who manipulate our false confidence in our ability to discern the Spirit. The fact is, if your understanding of what the spirit is telling you is not tempering everything you read and believe to be true with love, it is not the spirit of God.

It is my opinion that the enemy is much more subtle than we recognize - doctrinal error is the most obvious attack, but he also works on our terribly inaccurate, natural ability to know right from wrong. Love (what we were created to do before we decided to get into the right/wrong business) is the only way out of the dualism that we have created for ourselves and the same dualism that is exploited by the Devil.

I personally believe that a lot of false teaching is throughout the church. You don't have to look far to find a sincere Christian who is dead wrong about some of his beliefs and right on about others. However, I don't think any of us have perfect revelation, yet and I don't think God is holding any of that against us. But I think the false prophets Jesus warned about were not those who teach things such as pre-trib or post trib or methods of baptism, or predestination, or even those who teach that obseving the law is very important vrs. being completely under grace. Instead, I believe with my whole heart that the false prophets He warned about were those that teach, in one form or another, that we can gain access to God without Christ. Because that teaching will keep one from gaining access to God at all.

That's what I think anyway.

This spirit of the anti-christ is attacking the body of Christ through any facet God allows. For us as believers our fate is explained in Revelation. What are we to do but defend and for this very reason we are equipped. Aspen you speak of conditioning which is relevant and important. Conditioning oneself through living out God's sanctifying love in one's life is what shows us holy and can bolster confidence. This is walking in the Spirit. If love is the leading cause, then fruits will be apparent, the rest comes naturally because of the vine you are attached to. (your source some may say) God is Love, Jesus is the vine. In Jesus the Father is well pleased.

We can know ourselves by judging our own actions, direction, and motives. To be aware of your voice through every source of media is prudent. If you claim to be of Christ then your voice must align with that of Christ. To show fruits that differ from Christ's (i.e. dehumanizing) is to stray from the vine of life that is love. We must learn from the word of God, living intentionally with obedience to love as the Law. Against such there is no Law. And what better an instructor than the Holy Spirit Himself to be our guide; to strengthen and groan for us to our Lord. By knowing ourselves in what we think and say, we can assist in the work God is doing in us by acting and thinking against fruits manifested that are not of God.

Dehumanizing is destructive and blinding oneself by definition, certainly a tactic of Satan and his hoard.

Nonsense!

34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

33 Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?

Time to learn what is self righteous and what is Godly righteous.

Is freedom of speech an excuse for hate speech, or do we give license to hate speech in the name of free speech?? If it can be demonstrated that "free speech" that devolves into hate speech which infringes on my fundamental freedoms, does "free speech" need further definition?

False prophets of today are the ones who have made a business out of prophecy. They write books for sale at christian book stores. They tour and gather crowds of people and take up collections of money, while they are there. They speak soothing and faltering words to the listener, in Gods name, for the purpose of their business.

One very important fact would be not displaying the power of the Spirit as a witness to them.

Interesting question, but I am only intending to discuss the impact of negative language on our Christian witness and our souls.

The pharisees thought that they were righteous and needed no teaching. they were top notched in their own minds and were threatened by this newcomer Christ who came speaking violent accusations and things they didn't understand.

Do you think Christ hindered their faith?

Those who had faith were not hindered by Christ's words. When Christ sounds harsh in the NT towards the most stubborn and arrogant of the Pharisees, I believe He was still refraining from dehumanizing them - in fact, He was trying to help them become fully human by expanding their narrow mindedness. Unfortunately, many of them were too rooted in the Fundamentalism to incorporated Christ's teachings about love, forgiveness and servant-hood towards their neighbors into their doctrine of rules and regulations for worship.

so if I said to you today "Get behind me satan because you love the things of man and are not mindful of the things of god". Would you understand that or would I be trying to hinder your faith or trying to dehumanize you?

Cultural context is important when confronting someone. Peter was a hotheaded, tough, working class fisherman living in the 1st century; I doubt Christ would use the same terminology today. I would not recommend using it when confronting a fellow Christian today, unless you want to be interpreted as a pompous jerk. And who knows the true meaning of the phrase even then - perhaps it was the equivalent of 'whoa big fella!'

Cultural context had no meaning to Christ. He told the same truth to everyone. He is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. The satan example was told to one of his followers not an outsider. Christ did not consider the Jews His fellow Jews because they called themselves Jews. Christ was no respecter of persons. He was short and straight to the point with everyone. How hardly is anyone a real christian but those who are following Christ. Speaking to brothers in a faltering way is for those who are not fit for the kingdom of god anyway. They are cons and have no joy in the truth. They desire to sit at the kings table exchanging their lies with one another. It won't happen.
This world is coming down by the power of God. Especially the deluded ones that call themselves Christians who spread lies in God's name.

Looks Like God gave His Spirit and power to a [background=rgb(247, 247, 247)]pompous jerk[/background]. Either that or he is really angry just like all the prophecies say. Isn't He?

-- You appear not to take into consideration the work that Jesus did in Peter after he rose and the continued work the Holy Spirit did in his life in the days and years following.

Son of Man,

2 Timothy 2:24

24 The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged,
25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

Scripture disagrees with your position.

1 Cor 13

1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Now lets look closely at a quote from Jesus

Matthew 12:34

34 “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.
35 “The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.
36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
37 “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Take notice of the 37th verse. True there is a time for sharp rebuke, just as is taught in Titus, but it is never taught to remove kindness. Now if it is Jesus uses a harsh tone with His speaking against men during this time, is it for us to judge Him weather or not He is using kindness?

37 “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Whatever happened to justification by faith alone? It's a good thing we have Martin Luther to correct Jesus.

The Lord used Martin Luther to bring some truth that had been buried (by the Catholic church) to light again. Martin Luther did not have all the truth and if he was living today, I think he would still be searching for more light from God's Word.

We see Martin as a normal man. Only Jesus has all the truth. The HEAD (not the neck, not the body) has all the truth because He is the TRUTH.
