My question is in regard to asking for God's guidance. Ok, so how do you differentiate when God is answering you and when it is your own thoughts? I've heard people say "God was talking to them" and I believe they were just listening their own ideas and believing it was from God. I've been asking God for guidance in my life and I'm not sure if it really is God answering or me listening to my own thoughts wanting it to be the answer. And how do I know that it is not Satan talking to me? Can anyone quote a bible passage that could help or give their own thoughts on the matter? Thanks for any replies. ;)

This is the only thing I can tell you. If what you hear lines up with God's Word then it is God.That is why it is important to KNOW THE WORD : ).
But if it opposes the Word, you know that is the devil trying to get you to disobey God's Word. But if what you hear tells you to do something that lines up with God yet you seem to not want to do it, that is your flesh.

Hope that helps we all struggle with this so you are not alone.

Joh 10:26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Gal_1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1Jn_2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The Holy Spirit is given to christians, for a reason, to teach them teh truth, but if they do not believe Hin than,

2Ti 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

If its in Love, its from God. If it leads you into bondage its from the devil, if it causes you to stumble its probably from teh devil. If you really desire the truth, there is only one place you will find it, in "Jesus". No man can teach you teh truth, they can only point you to Jesus, than it is up to you how far you are willing to go.

And from Paul, who was a Pharrisee and who had teh knowledge of teh Law, than found Christ

Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Php 3:4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
Php 3:5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
Php 3:6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
Php 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
Php 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

In All His Love

The Voice of God is His Word and the Word is His Will and those who call them self his sheep WILL listen to the Word and follow him that is how we test the spirit of a man. For all who pick and choose or deny things written that they don't want to hear... do not hear His Voice because they are not able. Only by the Spirit can a man say(OBEY) Jesus is Lord of their life, for no other spirit CAN follow Christ. That is also how you can know that True Christianity is the True Religion, for all other religions have you following a man's teachings. But Christ died so that we could have the Holy Spirit teach us the TRUTH for those who can accept it.

Thanks for the responses....I've been praying about whether I should leave my current employment to find something better. I wasn't praying about anything immoral that would go against God's word. I am one of his sheep and want to do the right thing. :)

I just found a great article regarding the subject of job/career change (calling, etc) that may be useful to others as well:

God's speaks to your spirit, You need to listen to what yout spirit is saying.
Your spirit is in the spirit [God's Spirit] realm, And Gos speaks Spirit to Spirit.
You mind is the mentle realm, It is also the devils playground, He will put wrong thoughts into your mind.
So learn how to be sensitive to the voice of God in your Spirit.

God said if you ask for wisdom, He will give it you, So ask God for the wisdom concerning your decisions,
Then thank Him for the answear.

Being filled witht the Spirit helps , God said,
Eph 5: 17. "Be not unwise, But underestand what the will of the Lord is".

HOW??.

V 18."Be, filled with the Spirit".

To add another dimension to the topic, a bit of faith plays a part as well. Or maybe a better description would be a lukewarm walk, one foot in the world and one foot pleasing the Lord. It's good you're looking for advice I see lots of people that never step out in faith they choose to make decisions based on worldly security or a form of vanity. In that some IMO never leave room for the Lord to make Himself known in your personal walk that He is there, why because people make their life decisions based on worldly security. I'm concerned for Christians that have never experienced a point in their life where they are dependent on faith, the testing of your faith.

James 1 includes being double minded "worldly security vs faith?" that is double minded
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

1 Peter also says the same about faith
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen[a] you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Don't be afraid to make a choice but continue to examine your heart "your motives"
mammon is the god of money If you didn't already know.

Matthew 6
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

If you are in doubt, it is not of God, it is your flesh. If God wants to speak to you, He will know how to reach you. Surely He knows that.Do you wonder when your mother calls your name if it was a figment of your own mind or do you know it was your mother? In this familiar way, God speaks. He speaks in a familiar tongue. When He calls for you, you will know in your spirit that it is Him. It is a distant voice, familiar that you feel you have heard before, that you know Him intimately. It is very rare for it to happen.

Numbers 12:6.7 "And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house."

Deuteronomy 34:10 "And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face."

It's rare to get here, and not of works but by God's mercy does He reach to individuals in such an intimate way.

Jan, here is some advice no one has thought of giving.

While it is nice to be able to quote scripture, what it amounts to on the internet is someone able to cut and paste from an online topical index. Have you spoken to others (in real life) about your upcoming decision, those who know you and who know the Lord?

One of the ways we grow as Christians is by interacting with other Christians. As they get to know us and we get to know them when questions of a personal nature come up we have a resource the Lord also uses, the relationships He has helped to foster either during communal worship or through Christian friendship.

Seek out your pastor, and if you don't have a real friendship with him then begin to develop one. But don't let the opportunity slip by because the reason you haven't gotten a strong answer to this question is that the Lord may have provided it to someone else and He is waiting for you to speak with them. Then His will may be made known to you and to them, thus you both are edified and the Lord Glorified.

Now I will quote scripture that is not just taken out of the blue; Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Might I suggest finding something better prior to quitting your current job.
