Personally, spiritual capacity is the degree to which you understand who you are and what you want most. Building your spiritual capacity is a journey of self-discovery; it means taking time to understand your motivations and what makes you happy.
I'm on this journey.

I don't know what spiritual capacity is or if it has an application. But happiness as an end goal is illusive. It will lead many astray, as it leads to people doing what they want.

But true happiness is like a pre-programmed condition that comes from returning to the natural state. Which is as it was in Eden, fulfilling our role in creation as stewart's of the earth, walking with our creator.

We are lead astray because that is the fallen nature. Our flesh tends to lead us away from God, and towards self-serving ends that do not make us happy because they do not resemble life in the garden.

What it requires to Build Spiritual Capacity

- The Holy Spirit

We live in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit and there is no way we would build spiritual capacity outside of Him. We need the ministry of the Holy Spirit more than we need anything else. One of the things that the Holy Spirit does is that He gives us strenght on the inside. The Christian life is a life that is lived from the inside-out. Paul said in the verses below:

“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

I have searched but not yet found how people have planned for this spiritual journey. I am Catholic - and this pilgrimmage originated as a Christian journey. I don’t want to go on this walk being distracted - but hope to focus on prayer, petition, getting closer to God through the history of the thousands who have gone before for centuries. I visited with my priest who suggested I read the gospels at very least & the New Testament in total if possible - lectio divino and meditation on the Word. He suggested having a list of people/intentions for which to pray. Any other suggestions out there? Ideas that worked to enrich your walk for greater spiritual benefit? Thank you!

If you are able to fast that is also helpful. If only to increase your devotion to God by virtue of denying the flesh.

1 John 2:15-17
15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[d] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Oh? How did you arrive at this idea?

God, our holy Maker, says to us in His word, the Bible, that He made us to be vessels for His use, temples in whom His Spirit dwells, joint-heirs with His Son, Jesus Christ (among other things). (2 Ti. 2:21; 1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19-20; Ro. 8:16). He also says to us in the Bible that the best way for us to live is in death to ourselves (Matt. 16:24-25, Jn. 12:24-25), denying what we want for the sake of God and others. God has a very different view of things than you, eh?

Building your spiritual capacity is a journey of self-discovery; it means taking time to understand your motivations and what makes you happy.
I'm on this journey.

How do you know any of this?

Happiness is actually among the least valuable and important things in life. Justice, mercy, peace, freedom, love, integrity, courage - these are all far more noble and necessary things than happiness, often requiring the sacrifice of happiness to obtain and maintain. And if they aren't, it becomes extremely difficult ever to be happy. Just ask folks in North Korea.

You know, God says in His word, that there's nothing good in us (Ro. 7:18; Ro. 3:10, 23; Tit. 3:3; Eph. 2:1-3). This is why we need to be saved from ourselves, from God's wrathful judgment of our sin, and and given new spiritual life by God through Jesus. All other paths, the Bible says, lead ultimately to darkness and eternal punishment.

Happiness in the flesh is death. Joy in the Spirit is life.
