Why do some base their faith on the cross? I will not debate if Jesus died on a cross, or a stake, which does matter, but lets just assume for now it was a cross he died on.
The Romans executed by a certain means. If they had firearms back then, they probably would have shot him. Whatever the means of death, he came here to die. The death was the main reason. If he had been shot with a gun, would the gun, or bullet be the symbol of your faith? If they had hung him by the neck with a hemp rope, would you have a hangmen’s rope as a symbol of faith? If the cross is not used as a symbol of faith, what does it represent?
Lets examine the death, which is why he came here as a human. His death was a sacrifice to God the Father, to free the human family from the sin of the first man Adam.
Throughout the Bible there are many who made sacrifices to God. All the sacrifices God excepted, were consumed by fire. Jesus was not consumed by fire…but his sacrifice was excepted. Now here is a strange part of the sacrifice made by Jesus. His body was not consumed by fire, (destroyed) and his life was given back to him? No other sacrifice was ever given back to others? Why was Jesus sacrifice given back? He had to give something that could not be given back? I have told you what in other post what the sacrifice was, so I won’t repeat it because you never excepted my explanation before, so I’ll assume it would still be rejected. But back to the symbol of the cross thing.
Why would anybody make a symbol of an instrument of death and give it such a high place in remembrance of a loved one? If you lost a loved family member, say a young child in an auto wreck, would you wear a little wrecked toy car around you neck?
How does an instrument of death become something to worship, and yes, even kiss?

We should not worship a cross, but you do realize that the work at the cross was the Father's will right? That if Jesus had not died on the cross we would still be dead in our sins and would not have the opportunity to receive the Spirit of God to indwell us so that The Word himself could take away our sinful nature by allowing us to be born again from above by the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

The cross is not to be considered a thing of gloating over a torture of our Lord as you are saying it shows... but considered our victory in Christ for his death had to take place to pay our sin debt and give us God's Spirit for us to be led by and without it we are lost.
We should not have the mind like Peter in his human nature did by saying, Lord we will not let them kill you, for it is in error.
Jesus rebuked Peter for thinking as man allowing the devil to use his tongue to dispute the flesh Word to die on the cross thinking it evil and torture, which would have NOT been the will of God, but of the devil who if he had know WHO Jesus was... The living Word.. would have done everything he could to keep the old covenant Word of the flesh alive.. but God was willing to forsake The Christ (His Word) on the cross for us to redeem a people for God and in return we would devote our lives to living FOR the Word/Son seeking to be cleansed and renew our thinking of the worlds ungodly way that can only lead to eternal death, for God's righteous way that leads to eternal life. Remember that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and nobody can come to the Father unless you humble yourself to His Word first. In the beginning was the Word.... was with God... was God... same was in the beginning with God. God and His Word are ONE.
God used Jesus.. the Son... His Word to create all things with, by and through and there is nothing that exists without the Son/Word whom when he agreed to become flesh to die in our place.. was in the exact image of the invisible God and Father.
Col 1:13-22
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

I think it comes from Paul who said...

Gal_6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Heb_12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Do we need to keep reminding Him, one need to get past teh cross if one wants to grow in Christ.

Why do some base their faith on the cross?
If some do base their faith on the cross, then they do so mistakenly. It may be an attempt to grasp on to something tangible to try and understand something spiritual. Many churches display the cross all over the place, even hanging huge ones from the ceilings with a grotesque, crucified figure on it. Hopefully, this symbol serves as a reminder of what Christ did for us, but if they start to base their faith on the symbol and need it in their hands for some sort of connection, then I think they are way off base.

If he had been shot with a gun, would the gun, or bullet be the symbol of your faith? If they had hung him by the neck with a hemp rope, would you have a hangmen’s rope as a symbol of faith? If the cross is not used as a symbol of faith, what does it represent?

This is actually a perfect way to look at how some use the cross. I personally find it distasteful to hang a murder weapon on the wall or on your person in order to remember Jesus and what He did for us. Though some may use this as a symbol to remind them, it is not the symbol that Christ required of his followers. Jesus told them to use the bread and the wine to remember him by (Luke 22:19-20), He did not carve out little wooden crosses for them and tell them to wear those after He would die. The real symbol of Christ is when a true believer partakes of the bread and the wine, and then goes out to live a Christlike life, being an example to the world. People should look at a true follower's life and be reminded of Jesus. That is the true symbol.
1 Corinthians 11:26 "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, ye do show the lord's death until he come."

This isnt Paul condoning using little replicas of the cross as a form of worship, as these things did not exist in the time of Paul, but were made up a century later as paganism started creeping into the church after the loss of the apostles and a church heirarchy that was run by revelation. Paul used the idea of the cross synonymously with the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know people use the cross to remind them of that, but they really should be reminding themselves by taking the bread and wine worthily.

I think you are right, Sammy! The emblems of His body and blood are the symbols of Christianity. Nice post!

I don't wear a cross around my neck, but even if I did I would not kiss it. I've heard of Catholic priests doing that, and it just seems ridiculous, even borderline blasphemous to me. Not to mention weird and creepy.
