The Bible

Did you watch the 6-part TV miniseries that ran on The History Channel titled "The Bible"? It got tremendous ratings. If you saw it, what did you think of it?
I saw a scroll on one of the news networks that because it did so well that NBC is planning a sequel to that show that will air next Spring. Would you watch it? My guess is that they will either have other stories or they will go into greater detail on the stories that were already shown.

Since I'm on the topic of TV, are there any shows that you enjoy watching?
I watch more than I should but I gave up watching TV comedies because they tend to be rather raunchy.
The dramas on AMC might be the best shows on TV - "Mad Men", "Breaking Bad", etc.

I know that this will be a short-lived topic, but that's O.K.

I watched the first hour of the series and didn't like it. They got WAY too much wrong! It's not a matter of interpretation, but they had things in the series that were flat out contrary to to the Bible. I simply stopped watching.... The book was better than the movie.

As for TV.... I like watching the news. Other than that, I enjoy a few shows but I tend to rent movies alot cause I don't have cable and I can only get local free channels. THe various crime investigation shows are my favorites. But I must admit I do like pro wrestling and could watch that if I had cable. Any sport that is on I could also watch.... I also like documentaries and wish the History channel would actually do more documentaries.

Disagreed with what? Do they think the movie was better than the book? That's fine with me.... But it isn't a matter of opinion that there were things in the movie/series that were not in the Bible and were contrary to the Bible. I watched only aout 90 minutes of the series and I saw plenty....

Well, this is one of those things that has bothered me a little bit.

I've seen a number of scathing reviews, etc for The Bible and I think it stems from doctrine preference and an unrealistic expectation. After all, I like to remind people that the show itself was 10 hours long, in totality. (Try picking up even the NLT or, heck, even The Message and see how far 10 hours of reading gets you.) Anyone who is fairly familiar with the Bible knows that there are issues with how certain things were portrayed (like the Ninja angels of Sodom) or important (we would say) details of the Gospel that were missed. That's okay, The Bible (show) was not meant to the the Bible itself!

I am all about the Gospel not being about only salvation or four particular books of the Bible, in fact I'll go on record saying that the Gospel is the entire Bible. The show points, at core, to the Gospel. It may not answer every query or do things the way you would do them, but it's a path that points to Jesus.

At the end of the day, I understand that no TV show is going to adequately (in the full sense of the word) portray the Word of God. In fact, you would need a 100% inspired TV show for God to make that happen, but I do believe like any fallen thing man creates, it can be redeemed. I have heard and seen the show bring people to reading the Bible or seeking for more, and I think that is a win if you care one iota about the Kingdom of God getting bigger.

In fact, I had never considered that in the story of Rahab, that when the wall collapsed, her house was spared (which butted up to the wall). That seems like a simple observation, but watching a visual representation of the event made me realize this little detail is very much like the story of Noah or Daniel where God's child is involved in the midst of the action, but is clearly supernaturally protected.

I think we have somewhat of a flawed thought process when it comes to things like this, but that's just my two cents.

I just thought the acting was amateurish and it was too hard to get past for me to watch it.

Worst piece of cinema, I have ever had the misfortune to watch from start to finish. I was stuck watching a pre-showing at a Southern Baptist church at the invitation of a friend who was worried that the Catholic Church is the Beast power. Mercy......

I watched it because I'm a fan of Kirk Cameron's acting. Back then, the Christian alternative to Hollywood was in its infancy. Cut off from Hollywood and their collective expertise, it was amateurs making this movie. It got much better with the sequel Tribulation Force and now they are producing some very stunning and well acted movies such as Fireproof and Kirk Cameron is the star actor I always knew him to be.

I know there was a smaller project to create a film for the life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, but I am not aware if that is still going forward.

There is a movie about Martin Luther that I found to be pretty good. It's called "Luther". I highly recommend it.
