'Do not follow the desires of the body; The lust of the eyes, the desires of the flesh. For this is not of the Father but of the world.'What does lust of the eyes in historic times mean??? What are they to avoid looking at?

Exactly what it would mean today. Our eyes lust over anything "forbidden". The clearest example would be pornography.

Hope that helps.

Covetousness I think could fall under the lust of the eyes too. It's not the avoidance of looking, I dont think, but the avoidance of desiring. For most of us it is easier to just not look.

FolksTo not admire a beautiful woman is a sin.God made beautiful sunsets, beautiful cars, beautiful animals and flowers, and the most beautiful thing of all - women.I don't torture myself by not glancing at the beautiful secretary bending over to pick up something, exposing her thong. On the contrary, I thank God for that sight. It just made my day. Then I forget about it, and go back to my mundane life.

But for the special and unceasing grace of God(Letters of J. C. Philpot)It is a most rich and unspeakable mercy, thatthose whom Jesus loves, He loves to the end,and that His sheep shall never perish, neithershall anyone snatch them out of His hand. This is the grand security of the saints of God; for . . . their inherent sinfulness and weakness are so great, Satan is so crafty and so strong, sin so powerful and deceptive, and the world so entangling and alluring, that but for the special and unceasing grace ofGod, they must perish, and concerning faith makesure and awful shipwreck."I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand!" (John 10:28)

I disagree. All Satan needs is an ity bitty toe whole. If its an accident, thats different. Paul tells us to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Cor10:5). Destructive sins (as apposed to non destructive:confused:) do not start out with the big things, its always small compromises.

Because you are not looking "lustfully". It is about the motives of the heart. Luke 11:34 "Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness." An accident is like Satan trying to blow out your light. You do not have to let him (James 4:7 "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."). But the intentional is like covering up your own light.

Temptations are hard to resist, the important thing is that, you know that it is wrong.

I can admire a beautiful car, sunset, woman - without wanting to own it.IMHO if David had seen Bathsheba bathing in the nude on the roof of her house - so what?Where it became a problem is when David let it grow in his mind, to the point where he sent for her - NOW Houston - we have a problem!

I think the big danger here is to hide things - they then become a forbidden and growing temptation. As wingnut says: "IMHO if David had seen Bathsheba bathing in the nude on the roof of her house - so what?Where it became a problem is when David let it grow in his mind, to the point where he sent for her - NOW Houston - we have a problem!"I can see a beautiful woman and see her as just that - without developing feelings of lust or guilt. What exactly is forbidden? And who decides this?I think the people with a sly and lustful nature are the ones that set the standard for the rest of us thereby transferring their guilt to us.

Interesting quote in red. How about, "Love a man, not his sin." Who wants to LOVE SIN? Just a curious quote. For example dear sir, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men ..." Romans 1:18. In other words, always love the ungodly and unrighteous, but never the ungodliness and unrighteousness (the sin perhaps?). blessings in Christ,Jake
