Salvation that is a gift and not an achievement, Ephesians 2:8-9, this truth confronts one of humanity’s greatest vices, the need to earn. You live in a world conditioned to reward performance, but the Kingdom of God operates on another principle, that of unearned grace. Grace is the divine favor that reaches you despite your failures and not because of your virtues, it breaks human pride and leaves no room for self-glory. Salvation is not the result of effort, religious discipline or good intentions, it is a gift offered by God which can only be received with humility and faith. When you understand this, you are freed from the spiritual anxiety of doing to be and begin to live from you already are.
This understanding also protects you from two dangerous extremes, legalism and permissiveness, grace is not a license to sin, nor a burden to carry, it is empowerment to live a holy life with joy and gratitude. Those who understand what salvation cost, the blood of the lamb, do not live as those who want to take advantage of it, but as those who have been profoundly transformed by it. Grace does not leave you the same way it found you, a broken scale representing the end of spiritual meritocracy, then the image of a gift being received with empty hands could emerge, symbolizing that you bring nothing and everything is given to you. This clearly communicates the essence of the gospel, free salvation, but which profoundly transforms those who receive it.
If you have been saved by grace, the inevitable question arises, what does God expect from you, now that he has reached you? The answer leads you to understand that although you are not saved by works, you were created for them and that is where faith begins to act in the real world. Ephesians 2:10, this reveals a truth that is often overlooked, good works are not the cause of salvation, but its natural consequence. Faith that does not produce practical fruits needs to be re-evaluated, good works do not only mean social actions or visible gestures, they also include daily attitudes of integrity, words of life, generosity, forgiveness and service, every act performed with love and in obedience to the Holy Spirit becomes part of this eternal plan that God has already designed.
Living these works is actively participating in the divine project that transforms the world around you, one step at a time, each small gesture, this understanding prevents faith from becoming something theoretical or disconnected from reality. The believers life is concretized in practice, when you help someone in need, forgive an offender, care for your family with zeal or work with excellence, you are responding to God’s call. Good works do not make you more saved, but reveal the salvation that already dwells in you.
