The problems you face, greed, pride, violence and hatred aren’t just societal issues, they’re symptoms of a spiritual illness that only God can heal. Paul is revealing your need for God, by recognizing the depth of your brokenness, you are able to see the depth of God’s love and the magnitude of his grace. Only when you understand the problem of sin, that you can fully appreciate the gift of salvation. Without understanding your need for a savior, the good news message would simply be good advice, but with this understanding, the good news message becomes life changing good news.

Paul challenges you to be honest with yourself, to look past the facades you build and face the reality of your heart. It’s easy to think you can fix yourself or control your own destiny, but Paul’s message invites you to surrender your pride and admit that you cannot save yourself. Recognizing your brokenness isn’t about feeling hopeless, it’s about opening your heart to the one who can restore you, when you acknowledge your need for God, you create space for his grace to enter your life.

Romans 3:21-24, the term justification means, to be declared righteous or innocent before God, imagine standing in a courtroom knowing you are guilty and hearing the judge declare you not guilty. Through Jesus, God offers a way to clear your debt, to be seen as blameless, not because you’ve earned it, but because Jesus took your penalty on himself. This justification isn’t something you can achieve on your own, Paul makes it clear, that no amount of good deeds, moral behavior or religious observance can make you right with God.

Humanity has tried to reach God through self-effort, ritual and the law, but always falls short, no matter how hard you try, you can’t measure up to God’s standard on your own. The good news, God’s solution to your sin and separation isn’t found in your efforts, it’s found in your faith. To be justified by faith means, that you trust in what Jesus has already done for you on the cross, just as God credited righteousness to Abraham because of his faith, Romans 4:3, God also credits righteousness to you. When you place your faith in Christ, it’s a divine exchange, your sins are placed on Jesus and his righteousness is credited to you.
