Good morning fellow members. Yesterday I rashly made a decision to follow the Saturday sabbath, today, I would like to redact what I thought I concluded. The post was in the thread: "The Covenantal Sabbath and Gentile BelieversDoes the New Testament Establish the Fourth Commandment as a Universal Covenant Requirement?

It is true that this is a subject that has been growing like a weed in my mind, and heart. I wrote the following to a member this morning and I would like to copy it here and tag a couple members as well:

I had every intention of deleting the sabbath posts of mine, but Angelina closed the thread. I spoke way too soon, even though this subject has been on my heart for a while now. After sleeping on it, or trying to anyhow, it is impossible for me to ignore the verses that have made it clear to me all these years. I will not be swayed by "every wind of doctrine" and I have repented over this and, that is what happened to me yesterday! You are of course, free to believe what you will. Thank you and peace to you!

  • Colossians 2:16-17: "Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ." (Explains that Sabbath rules were shadows; Jesus is the reality).
  • Romans 14:5: "One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind." (Allows Christians personal freedom whether to observe specific days or not).
  • Galatians 4:10-11: "You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you." (Paul warns the Galatians again against returning to the bondage of strict legalistic calendar observances).

I was a bit worried when you posted about joining the Saturday sabbath people. However, I just want to note that there is nothing wrong with meeting on Saturdays. The "let no man judge you" works both ways. No one should be judged for keeping the sabbath either. The problem I see, is when they make it a legalistic requirement to meet on Saturday. The seventh day Adventists even claim that meeting on Sunday will one day be the mark of the beast. That's a problem.

yes the Jewish legalistic requirements are the problem, indeed. Jesus did rebuke them severely and called them hypocrites, we have to keep it simple always.

Bless you for your sincere testimony.

Personally, when we are told not to judge those who keep holy days, which would include God's gift of Sabbath, I don't believe we are then able to criticize fellows who respect the holy day calendar . Nor are they in any way obligated to defend.

We cannot work our way to eternal salvation. So says our Lord from Heaven.

Therefore,I do not believe we shall be condemned for feeling led to follow God's calendar.

This is true; however, it is not a requirement under the New Testament covenant.
A believer is free to esteem one day above another unto the Lord, but Scripture does not place Sabbath observance upon Gentile believers as a covenant obligation for salvation, righteousness, or spiritual standing in Christ (Romans 14:5–6; Colossians 2:16–17).

The concern only arises when what was fulfilled in Christ becomes taught as binding upon the conscience of believers.

Nancy- those verses are clear to me also. RHS
In case you haven't looked at what Hebrews 4 is teaching us- have a look at the links below-
For me- I came to this understanding by scripture without a pastor. I had seen a man on tv many years ago from the Worldwide Church of God ( the plain truth magazine) ever see those?
Anyway- he was insisting on the 7th day observance, tithing, and unclean foods - much like the SDA do today. He also added in all of the OT festivals.-- I was newly out of the JWs and had much to learn- so he bothered me- I wasn't totally sure about the sabbath- he gave a long argument. Not able to trust any man to teach me truth, I turned to the scriptures where Hebrews 4 made it clear that he was mistaken.
I understood our sabbath rest is now in Christ when we rest from our works of the law to earn salvation. Jesus is Lord of the sabbath and He is our true rest. Matt 11 The shadow Paul spoke about in Colossians is more widely seen in Hebrews 4.
When this topic emerged again here I decided to see if others see what I do. Lo and behold they do-

I hope these bless you. They aren't in any special order. It's always encouraging to see that other believers have been given the same understanding by the Spirit of God and his word. to begin- Take note of verse 3- "For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He said..." and verse 10

Oh yes, Herbert Armstrong! When I was a baby Christian, before cell phones or computers or even answering machines, lol...I was at the local library All. The. Time! I would leave with no less that 3-4 books from the religious shelves. I remember this so clearly. I became so upset by something he was saying. I cannot remember what is was but, it shook me up pretty bad. So, I immediately called my best friend, and sister in Christ. She prayed with me and told me to take that book back and read no more.

So, after praying with her, we hung up and I was still a bit shook up so, I did a very new Christian kind of thing and prayed again that God would show me something in His Word...now this was the very first time that I felt I experienced a God thing! I opened my bible and just put my finger on a page with eyes closed and this is what I was pointing to:

Galatians 5:7-10

7 "Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.

9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be."

It hit me like a mack truck and oh how happy and excited that the God of all things communicated with me! He does seem to do that allot with babes

It still gives me a thrill to remember this...I will never, ever forget those verses, as a matter of fact, that was the first passage I memorized! So good!

Thank you @PS95 for your great reply, and yes, I am very familiar with the Hebrew verses.
I can still see Armstrong's face and bald head on the cover of that book, clearly! Ptraises to God above all things!

Isn't he the "British Israelism" guy? I read some of his stuff when I was a baby Christian too. I was warned and got away from it.

Yes- that's them. Their organization began to wake up broke apart once he died and became more mainstream, but there are still some stickers of his around online. Here is what they were about-- ( a jw/sda combo and some of their own)
  • Condemned the Trinity as a pagan doctrine.
  • Taught that “all saints” become little gods after their resurrection.
  • Denied that Christians can be born again prior to the resurrection.
  • Promoted Anglo-Israelism, the belief that British people are the literal descendants of the ten “lost” tribes of Israel.
  • Urged keeping the Old Testament law, including strict Sabbath observance and dietary restrictions.
  • Prohibited celebrating Christmas or Easter, which he condemned as pagan holidays. (Instead, WCG members observed seven Holy Days: Passover, the Festival of Unleavened Bread, Pentecost, the Festival of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, the Festival of Tabernacles, and the Last Great Day.)
  • Forbade members to consult medical doctors when sick.
  • Stressed tithing to a legalistic extreme. (Strictly observant WCG members gave 30 percent: 10 percent for a regular tithe, 10 percent to support the annual Feast of Tabernacles, and 10 percent intended to support widows and orphans within the WCG)
  • Forbade members to remarry after divorce and insisted that they remain celibate if they remarried after divorce.
  • Insisted that the WCG was the only true church.
  • Closed the movement’s doors to visitors and welcomed only converts.

That's awesome. Yep- it shook me too. It had to be early 90's. So if it was him on tv it was a rerun or someone else. He died in 86. I was very vulnerable then.- I was not sure of much in the bible- only knew the jw false teachings and was seriously questioning. I was struggling something awful. I could not ask anyone since I was taught everyone was evil and served satan- except the Jws. I had a bible and a prayer.
I do recall my JW mom had some of his books and got his magazines delivered when I was a teen. Maybe that's why I watched the show.
They had a tv show much like Jws have their videos now- sitting at what looks like a newsdesk.. to appear authoritative.
He was terribly mixed up.

Anyway- Hebrews 4 is what began to untangle me. The other verses in your list cemented it all for me.
I'm glad I brought him up- I think he scared many who didn't know any better.

They went more mainstream after he died.
