In this forum I am often impressed by the discussions about discipleship. In my life I can confirm the battle is often fought over one thing. As it was with the rich young man, "One thing thou lackest". The different things in different people may nevertheless be one thing in each case. The perfecting of discipleship forces the disciple to face that one thing. Without it there is no transformation.

If Christ is to be accepted in the foreground every other thing has to be put into the background.

The question for the disciple is "What is your one thing?"

You're absolutely right...at least ONE THING at a time. (we all have much more than just one thing, but its smart to tackle just one thing at a time)

Thanks Luke 3:6

Our head knowledge tells us its about having the right motivation, and how, with Gods help we can radically re-arrange our priorities in service to Christ. See Luke 14:33 as a point in mention. The terms are so severe that they can succed only if the motivation is right.

How do we sift our reasons?
Is it purely self interest?
Is it to please others?
Is it loyalty to a system of worship?
Is it to sustain a reputation?

None of these is sufficient.

Perfecting discipleship and its mastery can only be gained by crowning him as Lord and King. That means seeking to do all for his names sake....this is the right motivation.

We get a glimpse of what this looks like in the life of Paul. "I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live"

It was like the snap of a finger the instant I was saved .... a whole bunch of my "things" (sins) disappeared.

But not all .... I still have a few "one things" I have not resolved.

If my salvation depends on me overcoming everything .... then I could never be saved.

That is why I need a Savior to take care of the loose ends.

I found one , nailed Him to a cross , speared his side and broke His legs , and let him hang there until he was dead.

My problem was solved.

Yes Arnie I agree...though not one of his bones were broken and for good reason. Your salvation depends on allowing them to overcome everything and being of a willing disposition in the process.

If any Christian believes this is easy they will be in for a reality check when they are required to give an account of their lives before Christ.

It is funny this has come up, been thinking a lot about this subject myself. As Arnie said, when Christ grabbed me...so many things were instantaneously changed (and never seem to resurface) and a few things were definitely diminished, but these are the things I struggle with as they seem to want to "rear their ugly head" from time to time. Trying to capture every thought and bring it into subjection to Christ is truly something that I am utterly dependent on Him for. One thing is for sure...as long as I struggle...I will always remember who I was before Christ took hold of me.

Just my two cents from where I view it now. Thanks for bringing it up, sometimes its nice to know others struggle also...Christians are supposed to be too busy being Holy and smiling to struggle.

Men who entertain in their hearts and minds that which isn’t of God, wonder off the reservation. And a child of God that has wondered off the reservation is rendered ineffective in the matters pertaining to the Lord God. Doesn’t really change the child’s salvation status though.
Hence like even Jesus who was confronted with "if you are the Son of God then" even though there was no doubt in Him, because if there was, Satan would have found it. That’s what was being attempted by the enemy, Satan couldn’t change who He is, but Satan would try to render Jesus ineffective if Jesus had doubt that He was the Beloved Son of God in whom His Father stated He was well pleased.

Therefore exposure to the efforts of the enemy is constant, until the duty in the flesh is complete in the Lord’s eyes. Sometimes it's at bay, sometimes in your face, it’s all the same. Walk with the Lord, and He will walk with you.
