@ s4c (hope you don't mind my abbr. your name) ...

You come across as someone who loves God, wants to do his will and so on ... but you almost sound anti-fun ... are you anti-fun ?
Do you not believe that God gave us all things to richly enjoy ?
No I don't mean abuse or misuse or step into sin ... but it's almost like someone is saying sex is only for making babies, everything is straight down
the line.

Solomon who wrote Ecclesiastes says that he searched every avenue to find meaning in life and everything was vanity.
He tried fun, alcohol, music, wisdom, knowledge, women, but ultimately what the earth offered ended up being meaningless and vanity.
He ends up in chapter twelve telling us that the only thing that really matters is God and that we need to seek him,

before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern,
and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

Speaking of drawing close to God before we die.
This was his final and words on what really mattered and I agree and I'm sure you do as well ... but God never created us with the view of
being dull.
And Gaming just like some sporting activity is fun and exciting and fun and excitement are not necessarily linked to sin or evil.

Enq, your argument is not with me; it is with God Almighty.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness...wickedness, covetousness...full of envy...debate, deceit, malignity...despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things...Without understanding...without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. (Romans chap. 1)

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46)

Because it is written; Be ye holy, for I am holy... (1 Peter 1:16).

Enquirer,

I have a Nintendo Wii. I play it like once a month, if that. Sometimes, if I get a new game, I'll play it everyday until I finish the game, then I go back to hardly playing it at all. I don't see it as a ministry tool, it's jusst a Nintendo. I definatly think that, like many things, we tend to over do it with video games. I bought mine because I am a human being who likes different things and Nintendo happens to be one of the things I like. The most action packed game I play is Zelda, othe than that it's games like mariokart or wii sports. I am not sure I will have it for too much longer, I have other things I could use the money from selling it for.

I think gaming in the life of the believer will be affected by each individual's sence of calling and purpose. As I get older, and mature, I feel like video games are just a distraction from the mission God wants me to fulfill. At the same time I feel that part of God's itention for people is to do the many things they enjoy, for some that's playing a video game.

I am not sure who said it, but it was in this stream. Something about Jesus not being a gamer. In Scripture there is more that is not said about Jesus than is said about Him. Although I agree that Jesus wasn't a video gamer, they didn't exist; It is quite possible He played a game of kickball with the neighborhood kids, even as an adult perhaps (I could just imagine the dread of the Pharisees). So He could have been a game player. But He would have known when to play, and when to step away from a game. There is a time for everything under the sun.

Madden football and occasional "quest" games (slaying monsters and completing a storyline) were my poison. They can steal your time! They can be addictive. They are allowable under grace, but you should remember moderation. I have less free time these days, but even so, I'd rather read the Bible, listen to a sermon or hang out with my wife.

FHII,

A few of my uncles and couins used to have Madden tournaments, we even had this footbal trophy for the winner. I liked playing, but I never won the tournament. Did you ever play Blitz? We would have tournaments with that game too. I liked your post, it brought back fun memories.

Nintendo’s games carry a health warning.

One may “feel” that way, but what is the truth of the matter?

I am not sure who said it, but it was in this stream. Something about Jesus not being a gamer.
Yes, I posted that truth previously here.

In Scripture there is more that is not said about Jesus than is said about Him. Although I agree that Jesus wasn't a video gamer, they didn't exist...There is a time for everything under the sun.
Let’s avoid such vain speculation and rather seek the truth, some of which I had previously posted here.

You say you're Godly, but you still wanna have fun. You say we should not listen to human rules, well, they're not human rules, they are God's rules...

If you're not willing to let gaming go, then that is the extent to which you are in bondage over it. If you're not wiling to consider the possibility that you may be caught in a slick deception, and that it would affect your walk with God, then that is a clear indicator of the bondage you are presently experiencing -- even as you would deny that bondage.

Gaming is a worldly image, a form of idolatry. When you buy into those images, you are actually joining yourself to the dead, you’re living in death. A typical example of this is the word recreation. What it really means is re-creation. What are they re-creating? When you engage in recreation, you’re being re-created. You’re joining the things of the flesh, because all recreation appeals to the flesh. They want you to go out there and enjoy the things of the world. They make sure they’re always available to you, so that you’ll buy into them. Recreation as opposed to obedience and duty to Christ, which the bondman of Christ are to engage in only. Recreation is of the natural man, the heathen, that’s all pagan nonsense. Recreation is where you take off the whole armour of God.

It is quite possible [Jesus] played a game of kickball with the neighborhood kids, even as an adult perhaps.... So He could have been a game player. But He would have known when to play, and when to step away from a game.
Rather again, what saith scripture?

There are no games in the scripture, except by the pagan. The only theatre is in Acts 19:29-41, and that’s the pagan theatre where they tried to pull Paul into to try him for commercial violations. The townclerk said he’s not engaged in commerce, so they didn’t have any cause against him. And if Paul was being dragged into the theatre, now we know where all the hypocrites were. They’re all a bunch of stage actors. They can be the stage actors and give you the sense of justice, and give you that image that you’re being ‘well served’ by your court appointed liar…I mean lawyer. And you can be very well taken care of in the theatre, where the hypocrites rule. That’s another image that’s out there.

Those who would defend/embrace gaming are allowing themselves to become something other than who God says they are.

When you’ve joined yourself to the things of society, you’ve become dead just like them, and everybody that’s of that society is the walking dead. How do you begin to tear down these images? What are we supposed to do? You learn of Him. That’s where you begin. You learn of him and look to him for all truth, because that is the only place you will find truth. And from there, you will see what to do and what not to do, because he has showed us everything.

...(I could just imagine the dread of the Pharisees).
Just like when Jesus said to the Pharisees that they show people the Kingdom of God, but prevent them from going in, Churches today say, "There is Jesus. Here are all the leaders. You must go through us before you go through Him." They are showing people the way, but not letting them enter. They set up a wall between God and themselves. When they stand before the Kingdom of God and you, they don’t care what the Law of God says (Isaiah 5:24), they have cast it aside. Their back is turned towards the Kingdom of God, and they are facing whoever wants to come in through Jesus’ door (Revelation 3:20). So they have cast Jesus aside. Just like gaming, it is all self-will. They have cast the Law of God behind them, and anyone who wants to get into the Kingdom of God, they can’t do it.

God is not tampered with by the workmanship of men. If they do preach Christ, it’s not the Christ of the Bible at all, it’s some other Christ. They show him as being a meek and lowly man to the world, not as meek and lowly to his Father, doing the Will of his Father at every turn. Having an answer ready for every man that came up to him. He answered every question that was put to him using the Word of God. And what is it that the bondman of Christ is supposed to be doing? Having that answer ready for everyone that asks of him. Not speaking or acting as the world speaks, but speaking as our Master, who sent you into the world to bear witness of him.

So when you stop acting as the world acts, then you are no longer joining yourself to the dead. You’re evidencing the fact that you serve a living God, an omnipotent Father, a satisfied Christ, a victorious Holy Spirit, who has given you the victory over the world (1 John 4:4), because Christ himself has overcome the world (John 16:33), and we are more than conquerors with him in the world (Romans 8:37). But when you join yourself to the dead, how can you conquer? Dead things don’t conquer, they only smell, they stink, they’re putrid.

This verse has to do with joining the living unto the dead:

Revelation 3:1, "And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead."

Out of Vines New Testament Word Study, the term ‘dead’ here is from the Greek word ‘nekros’ and means "a church…in that state is inactive and barren." So ‘barren’ would be where Christ comes along and sees the fig tree there and it has its leaves and he looks on there and he doesn’t find any fruit. What happened to the fig tree?

Matthew 21:19, "...Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away."

It dried up right in front of them. And ‘inactive’ would mean everybody’s out doing their ‘recreational’ thing, being re-created in their own self will. Preaching that gain (e. g. the next new video game) is godliness and that sort of thing (1 Timothy 6:5). And "if you give to us, the Lord is going to bless you and he will give you all the material possessions you ever desired."

If you’re speaking his word and you’re doing his works, you have separated yourself from the dead. You’re no longer in civilization, you’re no longer a part of society. That’s not saying you don’t witness to the world, because that’s one of our purposes here, to witness to that world, but that doesn’t mean you become part of it.

We are to be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), but when you look to video images, who are you conforming yourself to?

They are allowable under grace...
That’s not what the Holy Bible tells us. Rather, grace = unmerited favor.

...we even had this footbal trophy for the winner.
And [Jesus] said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Luke 16:15

Sojourner4Christ,

I appreciate everything you had to say. I love you brother. I don't see everything the way you do, and I can tell you took the time to think about what you said.

It is clear to me that you want to live for the Lord and honor Him in everything you do. I too want to do the same. I'm sure that if you were to be scrutinized with your own lense, there would be things found in your life that are connected to the dead, otherwise you would not need Jesus, because you would be perfect all on your own. Be careful my brother, the measurement you use to mete out judgment is the same measurement that will be used against you. Remember love covers a multitude of sin, not only our sin against God, but also the perceived sins of our brothers against us or our way of thinking.

Again, much love my brother.

P.S.
I think it was someone else who said video games were permisable under grace. To me video games have nothing to do with grace.

This place is no different than the world at large. Virtually no one is motivated to do anything other than their own will, certainly not the will of God. They want justification, consensus via the masses; it's herd mentality, the blind leading the blind; witness the poll at the top of this thread. I don't come in here unless I get the go-ahead from the King himself. At times, I went ahead and posted on my own, and was soon told in no uncertain terms to delete the post.

People are not interested in transforming and renewing their mind in Christ, that is, actually doing what the word of God tells them to do. They're interested in conforming to the world and come here to seek others of like mind. Witness the OP.

I'm not here to convince anyone of anything, let alone one who actually replies to a post of mine. That's not my place in the the King's order of things for me. There are many other sideline readers of these posts, and the fact remains that they, having read my posts, are now accountable to the Lord for it.

I have a prophetic caliing placed on my life by the King himself. I don't have to like it, but I do have to be obedient. Others here, at the first opportunity, have in hostility, attempted to preemptively dismiss my calling, demanding I run their gauntlet. And in this silicon snakepit, I expect that treatment. I really don't care. All I care about is doing the will of my Father, of pleasing the Lord. I don't make a lot of friends, but then we're not to associate with unbelievers, other than to witness to them.

It's a sick world, brother. I cannot, at this time, give you the full bite on "gaming" because you would choke on it. If you knew the specific details operant with the wicked device, you would run the opposite direction from it.

I appreciate everything you had to say. I love you brother. I don't see everything the way you do, and I can tell you took the time to think about what you said. It is clear to me that you want to live for the Lord and honor Him in everything you do. I too want to do the same.
If you asked the Lord about gaming, assuming you truly wanted to know, then he would tell you. Problem is, most don't want to know because they do not want to change. "Appreciating" what I posted won't cut it with the King, and a child of God discerns that, so there's no call to stroke me. What was needed is the truth to be brought to bear, scripturally, and I have done that, and you are now accountable to that truth.

I'm sure that if you were to be scrutinized with your own lense, there would be things found in your life that are connected to the dead, otherwise you would not need Jesus, because you would be perfect all on your own. Be careful my brother, the measurement you use to mete out judgment is the same measurement that will be used against you.
And, of course, now comes your redirect. Your patronizing is unbecoming of a saint of God. Obviously, if you had a scripturally based rebuttal, you would have posted it. But you don't, because there isn't any. Only a remnant seeks the Father and is willing to DO what he tells them to DO.

BTW, it's the born again believer's positive duty to judge.

At the moment, this is low-risk stuff. So not to worry, ours is a cheap date. Ignore the reproof and/or log off. Easy enough.

Remember love covers a multitude of sin, not only our sin against God, but also the perceived sins of our brothers against us or our way of thinking.
Few believers and lots of make-believers. It takes "love" to stand here and tell you the uncomfortable truth. One cannot have love without the TRUTH.

Thanks for your reply.

sojourner4Christ,

No stroking or patronizing intended here.

Zechariah 8:1-15

In this passage two of the blessings God intends for His people are:
1. Children recreating
2. The elderly recreating

The word for "play" in verse 5, has many negitive definitions, but it also has many positive definitions; this is the reason why I reference the 15 verses. Context is so important. In the context of this passage, it is clear to see that "playing" is used for the positive. From the youngest to the oldest God intended for His people to be able to have times of rest and recreation, to play games, or sit back and enjoy watching the kids and grandkids play.

Although this is not reffering to video games, it is a passage that makes it clear that God is not against recreation, He actually intended it to be a part of the lives of His people. So, even though this passage does not deal specifically with video games, it also does not specify which games kids play. If a child wants to spend half an hour playing jump rope, hopscotch, basketball. or super mario, and their dad or grandpa sits next to them to watch, and while watching decides to pick up a controler and try a round or two, or shoot a few hoops, or jump with a jump rope, I see nothing wrong with that; and I think this passage shows that God dosen't either.

This is not to say that we spend hours and hours playing games or sit and watch others play. There is always more work to do, but that is the beauty of the Body. I do not have to work alone, and there are times where I cannot work, I need to rest, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, as well as spiritually. The salvation of the world depends on Jesus, the spreading of the gospel, empowered by the Holy Spirit, depends on the whole Body, not one individual.

Your apostolic call is not an isolated ministry, it works in the context of the body. Even Paul, often seen as the greatest apostle, submitted himself to the direction the Holy Spirit lead others to share with him (Acts 13:1-3).

You’re constructing your straw man.

Firstly, the nonscriptural word at issue is “recreation” -- not Scripture's play.

Secondly, the word play is translated elsewhere as follows:

play (10 times), laugh (10x), rejoice (3x), scorn (3x), sport (3x), merry (2x), mock (2x), deride (1x), derision (1x), mockers (1x).

Obviously, recreation does NOT equal play. There’s a world of difference between self-will and Godly expression.

Your apostolic call is not an isolated ministry, it works in the context of the body.
...when the body can be found. And the calling is prophetic, not apostolic.

Sojourner4Christ,

Please forgive my misunderstanding about your specific calling. Still, even a prophetic calling works in the context of the Body.

I believe that the words "recreation" and "play" are synonyms, "passtime", "repose", "relaxation", and "refreshment" are others I could have used. The point, I beleive scripture is making, in that passage, is that playing children and adults leisurly sitting in the gates are expressed as a blessing from God. What games they play is not specified. Although there are definately wrong games to play, and even wrong ways to play good games, they are not specified.

I'm curious, do you fellowsip with others?
