My experience with the Pentecostal Holiness was rich on feelings. It was a grand thing to have experienced the Holy Spirit and have God working in my heart. Once the old generation passed away I don't feel the richness of virtue that I did earlier on.

I find that we live in a generation whose lives are governed by feelings. They make decisions in life based on the way they feel. Some feel like leaving their husbands, some feel like leaving their church, some feel like partying, some feel like having sex outside the word of God. Even in the clergy preachers do not get too much into the weightier matters of scripture. So though feelings are a good thing when they are from the Holy Spirit, feelings can lead us astray when they are of the flesh, darkness, or of the devil. Even preachers are encouraging people towards accepting their own ill-governed feelings. You do not hear much preaching today on denying the flesh!

Here is a story on Noah as told by John Bunyan...

"This is the blot in this good man's scutcheon; and a strange blot it is, that such an one as Noah should be thus overtaken with evil!" From the Exposition into the First Ten Chapters of Genesis - By John Bunyan

Chapter 9 Ver. 20, 21. "And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:—And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent."

This is the blot in this good man's scutcheon; and a strange blot it is, that such an one as Noah should be thus overtaken with evil! One would have thought that Moses should now have began with a relation of some eminent virtues, and honourable actions of Noah, since now he was saved from the death that overtook the whole world, and was delivered, both he and his children, to possess the whole earth himself. Indeed, he stepped from the earth to the altar; as Israel of old did sing on the shore of the red Sea: But, as they, he soon forgat; he rendered evil to God for good.[40]

Neither is Noah alone in this matter: Lot also being delivered from that fire from heaven that burnt up Sodom and Gomorrah, falls soon after into lewdness with the children of his body, and begetteth his own two daughters with child (Gen 19:30-36).

Gideon also, after he was delivered out of the hands of his enemies, took that very gold which God had given him, as the spoil of them that hated him, and made himself idols therewith (Judg 8:24-27). What shall I say of David? and of Solomon also, who after he had been twenty years at work for the service of the true God, both in building and preparing for his worship, and in writing of Proverbs by divine inspiration; did, after this, make temples for idols; yea, almost for the gods of all countries? Yea, he did it when he was old, when he should have been preparing for his grave, and for eternity. "It came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods:—For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Zidonians; and after Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites.—He did also build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem; and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods" (1 Kings 11:4-8).

All these sins were sins against mercies; yea, and doubtless against covenants, and the most solemn resolutions to the contrary. For who can imagine, but that when Noah was tossed with the flood, and Lot within the scent and smell of the fire and brimstone that burnt down Sodom, with his sons, and his daughters; and Gideon, when so fiercely engaged with so great an enemy, and delivered by so strange a hand; should in the most solemn manner both promise and vow to God. But behold! now they in truth are delivered and saved, they recompense all with sin. Lord, what is man! "How - abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water" (Job 15:16). Let these things learn us to cease from man, "whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" (Isa 2:22). Indeed, it is a vain thing to build our faith upon the most godly man in the world, because he is subject to err; yea, far better than He, was so.

If Noah, and Lot, and Gideon, and David, and Solomon, who wanted not matter from arguments, and that of the strongest kind; as arguments that are drawn from mercy and goodness be, to engage to holiness, and the fear of God; yet after all, did so foully fall, as we see: let us admire grace, that any stand; let the strongest fear, lest he fearfully fall; and let no man but Jesus Christ himself be the absolute platform and pattern of faith and holiness. As the prophet saith, "Let us cease from man." But to return:

"And Noah began to be an husbandman." This trade he took up for want of better employment; or rather, in mine opinion, from some liberty he took to himself, to be remiss in his care and work, as a preacher. For seeing the church was now at rest, and having the world before them, they still retaining outward sobriety, poor Noah, good man, now might think with himself, "I need not now be so diligent, watchful and painful in my ministry as formerly; the church is but small, without opposition, and also well settled in the truth; I may now take to myself a little time to tamper with worldly things." So he makes an essay upon husbandry. "He began to be an husbandman." Ha, Noah! it was better with thee when thou wast better employed! Yea, it was better with thee, when a world of ungodly men set themselves against thee! Yea, when every day thy life was in danger to be destroyed by the giants, against whom thou wast a preacher above a hundred years! For then thou didst walk with God; Then thou wast better than all the world; but now thou art in the relapse!

Hence note, That though the days of affliction, of temptation and distress, are harsh to flesh and blood; yet they are not half so dangerous as are the days of peace and liberty. Wherefore Moses pre-admonished Israel, That when they had received the land of Canaan, and had herds, and silver and gold in abundance, that then their heart be not lifted up to forget the Lord their God. Jesurun kicked when he was fat. O! When provender pricks[41] us, we are apt to be as the horse or mule, that is without understanding (Deu 8:10-15).

"He planted a vineyard: and he drank of the wine, and was drunken." Although in the course of godliness, many men have but a speculative knowledge of things; yet it is not so in the ways of this world and sin, the practical part of these things are lived in by all the world. They are sinners indeed, "He drank of the wine."

"He drank of the wine, and was drunken." The Holy Ghost, when it hath to do with sin, it loveth to give it its own name: drunkenness must be drunkenness, murder must be murder, and adultery must bear its own name. Nay, it is neither the goodness of the man, nor his being in favour with God, that will cause him to lessen or mince his sin. Noah was drunken; Lot lay with his daughters; David killed Uriah; Peter cursed and swore in the garden, and also dissembled at Antioch. But this is not recorded, to the intent that the name of these godly should rot or stink: but to shew, that the best men are nothing without grace; and, "that he that standeth, should not be high minded, but fear." Yea, they are also recorded, for the support of the tempted, who when they are fallen, are oft raised up by considering the infirmities of others. "Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience, and comfort of the scriptures might have hope" (Rom 15:4).

"And he was uncovered within his tent." That is, he lay like a drunken man, that regarded not who saw his shame. Hence note, how beastly a sin drunkenness is; it bereaveth a man of consideration, and civil behaviour; it makes him as brutish and shameless as a beast; yea, it discovereth his nakedness to all that behold.

"And he was uncovered." That is, lay naked, Behold ye now, that a little of the fruit of the vine, lays gravity, grey hairs, and a man that for hundreds of years was a lover of faith, holiness, goodness, sobriety, and all righteousness; shamelessly, as the object to the eye of the wicked, with his nakedness in his tent.

Excellent topic! This is very true. No one looks at what is the right choice. Mainstream artists sing songs (most of which they didn't even write) because they think people can relate. So you have someone going through a difficult time and they always go for the songs that are going to agree with how they are feeling and continue to water the seed that going to support the way they feel. So now, because that song said the world is against you, there is no hope, and all is lost, they have convinced themselves its true. They don't look for hope. So like you stated, the leave their husbands, flee their families or just flat give up! This of course is the time they need Christ the most...... I guess I'll never understand why you cant tell some of them any different. I pray for all those who struggle with this and I hope you can see beyond what your feelings tell and what that little voice inside is tell you....

Alcohol leading to drunkenness, yes well, it's the magic elixir that causes you to miraculously metamorph from a noble human downwards
into the animal realm in ever decreasing steps.

First ... whoo whee I am the super brave lion, just watch me go babe !

Second ... you then transform into the gibbering monkey ... ooo ooo aahh ahhh ... oh what a clown thou art oh ye numbskull.

Thirdly ... thou descendest into the lowly office of the swine ... oink ... puking, sweating and trashing the place ... go pigs go !

Yup, the flesh is alive and well on planet earth, and she's a not goin anytime soon.
Why no preaching on the flesh ? ... well because we have grace ... grace this and grace that ... it's all ok bro ... God is a grace full God
Oh yes, he is fullllll of grace.

I remember one morning while praying I heard the Spirit in me say,

"Grace is not a bandage to cover your sins so that you can go and sin more".

No, grace is given by a merciful God upon the repentant ... get that ? ... upon the repenting one ... the one who has - past tense - turned away
from their sin.
Not the one who is currently lasciviously smacking their lips as they revel in their debased indulgence.

Hear ye, oh ye foolish one and pray ye for forgiveness and strength to overcometh thine pet iniquity.
God help us all.

I had an incident last night where my feelings were going to get me in a heap of trouble. I was frustrated about a few things, and I got angry. Oh the things that started going through my head...... So, before I ran my mouth and started more problems I sat down on the couch and asked the Lord for peace. I calmed down a little bit but the being in the situation was still frustrating so I went for a walk. I wanted to run, like run down the road, on the highway and escape. My feelings were telling me to just get out of there. I got about 300 feet down the road and something stopped me.

I turned around and started walking back. On the way back I asked the Lord to deliver me from the bondage and the frustration. So I went back in started thinking with Christ on my mind. I was soon calm enough that I was able to confront the situation with a calm, mature, and Christ driven attitude. And you know what? I learned something new and was able to plant a seed of hope in the other half of the situation.. I have a new hope today!

Brothers and Sisters, don't let your feelings own you. Let God lead you. If you think you are about to do or say something that will only cause you or others pain, stop, ask Christ. He will free you from it!!!

Well.....

I tend to believe our whole being is effected by our Fall. As a consequence, I tend to trust my decisions that are made by my mind, heart, and will more than one going rogue and leading me towards a cliff.....but it is no guarantee that it will be the best choice without the HS reminding me to put God and neighbor at the forefront of my mind - and it can still be tough to act on the good choice.

There are times when my feelings are all wrong. I feel the enemy is planting seeds to push my actions to cause me more grief. Thank the Lord, the Holy Spirit gives me a little tug on my shirt and detours me. Feelings have their place and time but they can mislead you. Trust the Holy Spirit and His tug and follow Him. Humans are very complex creature but remember, God created us, He knows his way around you and will never mislead you. Feelings are dangerous if you don't have the Holy Spirit to guide you.

I really wish more people would have commented on this one. It really takes self examination. Does one really understand what they are feeling in certain times? I would most like to point out times of trial and tribulation. Humans have defense mechanisims that kick in during high stress situations. We react all too often without always thinking and understanding what we are feeling at the time. Then you get regret. We say things we don't mean and do things we knew at that moment were wrong but we listen to the wrong parts.

So here is the question(s) I pose......

We knew how that turned out and ended up with regret, But we repeat it each time. If we have the prior knowledge of knowing that it was wrong why do we repeat it? Is it a lack of self control? We know evil is out there to tempt us and destroy us. Why do we give into these feelings? Why do we let our emotions control us? We feel the tug that tells us that it's wrong. This is the Holy Spirit trying to tell us something. Why do we brush it off? Why would you brush God off?

I recently had an experience where I took a situation into my own hands that I had handed over to God and wow, the next day I paid for it. The Holy Spirit was all over me.... He was speaking to me and telling me I should not have done that. So, not only did I repent and hand it back, I was then given guidance. That particular day, that started with guilt and shame ended on one of the best notes I have had in a long time. Towards the end of that day He stepped in and showed me His wonders. Talk about a boost!!! I was quickly back on the path. He reminded me of what I had given to Him to bear the burden and I was rendered speechless. I saw Him reach out and cast the Holy Spirit into my home that night!!!

Be mindful of what you are doing. Remember, He's got this!!! Know what you are feeling..... Not sure what your are feeling? Ask the Lord.....

I wanted to post this in a more popular forum. You may have heard DC Talk do this one but theirs was the cover. Here is the original artist who wrote "In the light". I put it here because it describes feelings we all have had. They are the correct feelings to be governed by....

Hi,

I think a lot of us think more highly of our own thinking than we should. Common sense is not really that common. We tend to think we are being rational and level headed when we are not. We let past feelings and situations blind us to current situations. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different outcomes. We think that it will be different this time and our pride let's us believe it just enough to fall again. I know that when I let my feelings rule me even for a second it is like rolling down hill and can not always stop myself once I get going. I find it impossible to stop and get control of the situation and go down a different path. We seem to think if we have been good and done what we should then it is okay break loose a little, thinking it won't get out of hand but it always does. We are blessed when we say no and do not listen to our feelings or desires. It is hard to do.

God Bless, Kim

I have commented on this one a few times LOL... It's kind of neat to see when I posted a few months ago while at a younger point in my spiritual journey.... When I first commented I was in the middle of a terrible tribulation. Praise the Lord, the tribulation is coming to a close... The Lord is doing just as He promises, I am much better than before I went into the fire... Okay, that being said, I can go further here.

I have had opportunity to see the complete outcome of letting your feelings get in the way. It doesn't work... It seemed that everytime I time I tried to "take the wheel" back from God and operate on how I was feeling I fell flat on my face. God had a way of slapping me on the wrist.. See, we can all agree that God is always with us, even in our worst and darkest times. And if you continue to let Him lead, you are guaranteed victory. But during our journey we tend to act on our own feelings and ambitions. This is when God may let go of your hand. You know these times... You made a choice that you know wasn't the best choice in the world. This is when the bottom seems to drop out on you. If you learn.. you'll come back to Him and try again..

If you don't know what you are feeling at any given time, just pray. God will show you where he wants you to go and what he wants you to do next. Do not let earthly emotions get in the way. I real quick test you can try out is this: Is what I am about to do going to be bring Glory to God? If you have to think too hard on it, then it's probably not a good idea. Be led by the Holy Spirit. Listen to that small voice, that gentle nudge that tells you to turn right instead of left.
