Isaiah 58

‘Why have we fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’
Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire,
And drive hard all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you do today to make your voice heard on high.
Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it for bowing one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord?

Is this not the fast which I choose,
To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed go free
And break every yoke?
Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your light will break out like the dawn,
And your recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you remove the yoke from your midst,
The pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness,
And if you give yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
Then your light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.
And the Lord will continually guide you,
And satisfy your desire in scorched places,
And give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

Well what is clear from those scriptures is that even in the OT, God was not as impressed with abstaining from food as He was with feeding the poor. You want God's help, take up your cross, follow Him and He will hear you. Not go without food think your stomach pain is something special to Him.

Excellant instruction on fasting there. Thanks for sharing them JAN.

Sorry JAN, what exactly are you trying to convey here? You're quoting OT and under the NT fasting is a part of the old way of doing things.
14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"
15 And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.
17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved."
Matthew 9:14-17

It could be the old wineskin is the old fasting process.

Also I assure you we have records of fasting happening in the early church from the first century. Both Calvin and Luther wrote on the subject of fasting, although admitingly they were speaking on the traditional manner of fasting.

If we do our due diligence there are many solid principles that can be brought forward from the old into the new.

By due diligence I mean was it in the gospels? Can we find it in acts? Do the epistles speak about it?

Reference here:
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27

Acts 13:33
Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Our works do nothing for our benefit before the Lord for he knows the condition of our heart and the motives and intentions behind them. But if we seek to please the Lord by doing what he desires, then these principles apply to us today.

I am not saying not to humble yourself through traditional fasting, but as the OP states, concern yourself for the reason of the fast.

8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
James 4:8-10

OK, I think I see. I was trying to see where you are coming from.
FYI, I am diabetic and CANNOT fast. When I was a young Christian I once did a 40 day fast and believe me it accomplished literally nothing, because I was just trying to accomplish a thing.
I agree that God wants a pure heart more than anything else.
