Following his victory at Mount Carmel when he defied King Ahab, Elijah was found running for his life to escape the wrath of the king and his wife, Jezebel.
Elijah hides in a cave where he meets God and discovers through a display of awesome power... the depth of God’s care for him.
Scripture describes how God revealed Himself to Elijah.
At the beginning of the account, God questioned Elijah as to why he was hiding. Elijah immediately began making excuses to justify his actions.....an revealing that he had not “heard” the message God was trying to give him.
God sent winds strong enough to break rocks, then an earthquake, then a fire, “and after the fire a still small voice.”
It was after this display of awe-inspiring power that Elijah was ready to listen and respond.
God will often speak plainly and directly by addressing the real issue to get our attention.
In Elijah’s case, God was addressing the fear in Elijah’s life that caused Him to react to threats by running from them.
Elijah’s focus had shifted from God’s ability to save him to his own feeble attempt to save himself.
In recent days many have experienced devastating winds, earthquakes, and fires, costing loss of life and property to multitudes, conjuring widespread fear.
In the face of these events, we are praying for faith to arise and conquer fear, and for hope to displace despair.
Though if not directly, all of us are affected by these events. ( knowing friends or family)
It is a time to be listening for a still small voice to restore confidence in the loving-kindness and faithfulness of our merciful Heavenly Father.
“For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” 2 Timothy 1: 7.
Keep listening for the “still small voice”
If you are weary on life’s road;
The Lord will make your heart rejoice
If you will let Him take your load.
