Jesus was quoting Ps. 22Psa 22:1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? The whole Psalm is about how He was fulfilling prophesy.Psa 22:13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. Psa 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. Psa 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Psa 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.Psa 22:27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. Psa 22:31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. ------------------consider Ps. 88Psa 88:10 Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. Psa 88:11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? might want to consider Ps. 6 and Ps. 8 and Isa 49 too...--------------Luk 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Luk 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures, Luk 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: Luk 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luk 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.----------------------------------From Roberson's word picturesMatthew first transliterates the Aramaic, according to the Vatican manuscript (

, the words used by Jesus: Elōi, elōi, lema sabachthanei. Some of the MSS. give the transliteration of these words from Psa_22:1 in the Hebrew (Eli, Eli, lama Zaphthanei).-----------------------See section III. 3 in the Companion Bible appendixeshere......http://www.angelfire.com/nv/TheOliveBranch/append94.html-----------------------Christ was drawing attention to the OT by speaking Hebrew.

"Why did Jesus say, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'"
Because He took the blame and the curse for the sins of everyone, which is something only He can really understand- though it is surely for us to try to understand it.

It's perhaps one of the deepest statements of the Bible in my very humble opinion."Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"(English translation of the Greek.)It brings me a very emotional feeling each time I hear it or say it. Folks, if there was ever a moment to say "this was it" then this was it! Their is nothing but power and majesty in this moment. This was when Jesus felt the burden and the Ghost left him. This functions on both the surface and in the deep, but it's something that you honestly have to go to God about. The references above will give you the scriptural documentation.

The whole Psalm is about how He was fulfilling prophesy.
Psalm22 was written hundreds of years before Christ and it prophecies the Crucifixion right down to the soldiers casting lots it was meant to full prophesy as Karin so rightly describes and he Christ directs your attention to the first words of Psalm 22 to prove he was the prophesied messiah. And as Swampfox stated its hard to hear these words without having an emotioal reponse.Psa 22:1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

In my opinion I think his words carry a much higher meaning than we may realize. I don't believe that Jesus was speaking about himself. To my knowledge he had not addressed His Father by the name of God until the day of his crucifixion. It seems to me he would have said, "Father, Father why has thou forsaken me?I believe the only way to really know the truth will be revealed through the Holy Ghost. Otherwise, it will remain a mystery that none can answer.

This is no mystery.Jesus spoke these words, because of what was said in Lamentations had said....He was afflicted by God....
La 1:12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
God afflicted Him with His wrath, the wrath that you and I should have had to take. He was the sacrifice, He was the one to take on our wrath that we so justly deserve. If we were to get that what we truely deserve, we should all go to Hell.Because God's wrath abided on us, Christ took the Cross so that it would not be directed toward us.But because He was afflicted for us by His own father, we don't have to be.and we should be eternally grateful for what He did for us.
Isa 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
We should take up the cross, speak the truth and Preach the Gospel, Preaching sin, righteouness, and judgment.

We agree onfire. Think of the tremendous burden that he carried at that moment with all of our sins on his shoulders. My advice is that each person should study the Gospels on this moment and develop their own personal connection with it because it is a very personal ordeal. This was done for each individual person.

"Why did Jesus say, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'"
This is perhaps the greatest question that can be asked. The Holy Spirit certainly revealed to you the subject for the ages. Lord bless you Kriss! I believe this may be a question for eternity because it is beyond our finite knowledge. "... that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to 'comprehend' with alll the saints what is the width and length and depth and height--to know the love of Chrsit which passes knowledge: that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Eph. 3:14-21). Often I hear the "pronouncements" and "thunders" of having to do something to obtain salvation. Yet Paul talks of comprehending something to know the love of God. When we can comprehend a "little" of the indomitable power to love we will "do everything" to serve Him. The question that serves your question is ... what are we to comprhend?Paul said, "God forbid that I should glory, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." One author many decades ago wrote, "This wonderful problem--how God could be just and yet the justifier of sinners--is beyond human ken. As we attempt to fathom it, it broadens and deepens beyond our comprehension. When we look with the eye of faith upon the cross of Calvary, and see our sins laid upon the victim hanging in weakness and ignominy there--when we grasp the fact that this is God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace--we are led to exclaim, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us" (1 John 3:1)!More directly to your question, "Why did Jesus say, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" How could God be just and justify sinners goes straight to the heart of the manner of why Jesus "felt" forsaken. Why did He feel forsaken of His Father?"Because He poured out soul unto death" "And the LORD has laid on Him [Christ] the iniquity of us all" (Isa 53:12, 6). Sin produces the excruciating and emotional phenomenon the Bible calls condemnation or guilt. Jesud did not mrely experience the sense of condemnatin attached to one person's life of sin, but rather, "the iniquity of us all." I believe that Christ Jesus, in his own heart and mind was plunged into the combined whole of all human evil as though He were the guilty party. He took on Him the mental and emotional horror that sin's condemnation in the consciousness of the soul. Think about your deepest chasm of darkness in your life. Did you not have feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, condemnation, and forsakeness? I have. There were times when I felt like there was no turning back from the utter darkness of my evil act. All sin is evil, there is no middle ground. That's why we want to fix our eyes of hope on Christ's journey to Calvary. Can I try with a sanctified imagination what Christ went through with all the sin I have committed and combine it with the "sins of the world?" "He [God the Father] hath made Him [God the Son] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in HIm" (2 Cor. 5:21).How many talk only about the "physical" sufferings of Christ. Oh, don't take me wrong. It must have been excruciating beyond what you or I can contemplate. Yet, anyone paying close attention to all the Biblical texts pertaining to His death, Christ speaks very little of the physical pain. In closing, this subject barely touched, the following are some powerful words that I read a couple of decades ago for the first time. One author wrote:"Upon Christ as our substitute and surety was laid the iniquity of us all. He was counted a transgressor, that He might redeem us from the condemnation of the law. The guilt of every descendant of Adam was pressing upon His heart. The wrath of God against sin, the terrible manifestation of His displeasure because of iniquity, filled the soul of His Son with consternation. All His life Christ had been publishing to a fallen world the good news of the Father's mercy and pardoning love. Salvation for the chief of sinners was His theme. But now with the terrible weight of guilt He bears, He cannot see the Father's reconciling face. The withdrawal of the divine countenance from the Saviour in this hour of supreme anguish pierced His heart with a sorrow that can never be fully understood by man. So great was this agony that His physical pain was hardly felt. Satan with his fierce temptations wrung the heart of Jesus. The Saviour could not see through the portals of the tomb. Hope did not present to Him His coming forth from the grave a conqueror, or tell Him of the Father's acceptance of the sacrifice. He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their separation was to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which the sinner will feel when mercy shall no longer plead for the guilty race. It was the sense of sin, bringing the Father's wrath upon Him as man's substitute, that made the cup He drank so bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God."Now we can say with all assurance, "But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more" (Rom. 5:20). Part 1 (have some more to say)Blessings in Christ,John S.[email protected]

In verse 1, of Psalm 22, we are going to see Christ's first words from the cross: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" This was not Jesus saying this to God; it was Jesus simply quoting Psalm 22 from the cross, as it was written by David 1000 years prior. For these are the first words in the Psalm. Jesus was teaching from the cross and fulfilling prophecy, in that we could believe that He was the True Messiah foretold of by the Prophets of the Old Testament and promised of by God to be sent to the world, and that it was He, through whom all could find salvation and life eternal. With that said here is Pslams 22 PSALM 22 Psalm 22:1-End 1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?*1 why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Explanation from above verse:*1 = Jesus quoting the phrase from *1 above, 1000 years later in the New Testament: Mark 15:34 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV) 2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. 5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. 6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.*1 *Explanation from *1 above: These are the exact words of the mockers were foretold of 1000 years prior to them being said about Jesus as he hung on the cross. Below, in [Matt 27:43] we see them saying those very words. (Remember that we are comparing Hebrew and Greek translated into English). Matt 27:43 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. (KJV) 9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. 11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.*1 Explanation from above verse:*1 = Fulfilment of the above prophecy, 1000 years later in the New Testament: Matt 26:56 56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. (KJV) 12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. *Explanation from above verse: Bulls means enemies, Jesus was surrounded by enemies. Bashan was known for having the strongest bulls in the region, Jesus was surrounded by the strongest of enemies (the high priests themselves), and they all gathered around to enjoy His slow death. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. *Fulfillment of the prophecy above: 1000 years later in the New Testament, it is recorded that as the people who passed by, and even the chief priests gaped (mocked) at Jesus as hung there, dying on the cross: Matt 27:39-43 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. (KJV) 14 I am poured out like water*1, and all my bones are out of joint*2: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels*3. *Explanations from above verse: *1 = see verse below for prophecy fulled 1000 years later in the New Testament. *2 my bones are out of joint = From hanging on the cross. *3 = see verse below for prophecy fulled 1000 years later in the New Testament. John 19:34-35 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. (KJV) 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws*1; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. *Fulfillment of the prophecy of *1 above: 1000 years later in the New Testament, Jesus accomplished that which was written: John 19:28 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. (KJV) 16 For dogs*1have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.*2 *Explanations from above verse: *1 dogs = In the Bible, heathen unbelievers are referred to as dogs. *2 they pierced my hands and my feet. = When they nailed Him to the cross. 17 I may tell all my bones*1: they look and stare upon me. *Fulfillment of the prophecy of *1 above, 1000 years later in the New Testament: This means that all His bones were intact and not one of them were broken. For any sacrifice to be offered up to God, it had to be perfect. [Ex 12:46 & Num 9:12] And Jesus Christ was That perfect sacrifice for all time! Below is the fulfillment of the prophecy that Jesus' bones were all intact and unbroken. John 19:32-36 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled*1, A bone of him shall not be broken. (KJV) *Explanations from above verse 36: *1 that the scripture should be fulfilled = What scripture fulfilled, you ask? The one we are studying, Psalm 22:17. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.*1 *Fulfillment of the prophecy of *1 above, 1000 years later in the New Testament: One thousand years later, Jesus would look down from the cross as he was dying, and see the soldiers fulfilling this prophecy below: John 19:23-24 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. (KJV) 19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. 22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. 23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. 24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. 25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. 26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. 27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. 28 For the kingdom is the LORD's: and he is the governor among the nations. 29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. 30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this*1. *Explanations from above verse 31: Here we have an example of what I told you about prior to this Psalm, about the different syntax of the Hebrew and Greek languages. The sentence: "that he hath done this" in the Hebrew wording, is the exact same statement in the Greek as: "It is finished." These are the very last words that the prophesied Messiah would say, 1000 years later from the cross. Below in [Jn 19:30] we see Christ's very last words from the cross, and we see that He had in fact fulfilled the prophecy that was written of Him. Psalm 22 was written and fulfilled by the Divine intercession of Almighty God Himself, so that YOU, when you read of it 3000 years later (today), could believe! Was this all in vain, will you not believe? John 19:28-30 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. The Lord Yeshua is the Author and Finisher of our faith and as such it was neccesary that He was subjected to all the pains and passions that we, spirits and souls in flesh, would and do endure to follow in his witness in testimony. And there has been many times when I have felt as much and have cried in repentence: My God, my God why have you forsaken me, or please Lord do not forsake me.

You have had three different people in this thread tell you exactly what it means Karin, N2thelight and me(kriss) because that is why he said it.Reread the three posts they all say the same thing because its the answer. Now it may have more personal meanings to some also,it may even have a deeper level of teaching I haven't discovered yet but for all intensive purposes the answer is As a fulfillment of prophesy by directing your attention to Psalm 22 written some 1000 years before Christ where it prophesied his Crucifixion. That is why he said it. It is the answer to the question "Is this King of the Jews" answer, yes the anointed of God, the prophesied one. King of all men THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

What i think of ..is the impact of that statement upon the followers who heard it, and the wrestling of emotions that must have been created by the ones who were close to Him and expierianced His devotion and love to God

Yet, despite that devotion, to have been forsaken. We can imagine what it is like for a child to be abandoned by a parent. Or can we.

it is a painfull thought to imagine, your post caused me to think of prov 8 30then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;31rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.32Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. But, we know it would have been impossible for him to be forsaken by God, I am of the belief that he was fulfilling Psalm 22. that the opening verse was the only verse that had not been fulfilled...and .he had to fulfill the scripture:bible:

But He was- He said so, and He had to be. There is Paul's comment, too, that He 'became sin' for us (2 Cor. 5:21) This is because He really did take the punishment for the sins of the whole world. This is amazing, but true, and needs to be grasped as far as mortals can understand it.'Moses and Aaron then went into the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell face down.' NO He WAS NOT FORSAKEN if Christ was left abandoned, then all of us have No Hope. "Forsaken is present tense" eternal..you can not be un-forsaken. Pauls referance to Christ being made Sin...is "the Flesh"..so he could crucify the flesh with all of it's works.!!

He wasn't; but Jesus said He was.
"Forsaken is present tense" eternal.
God does not exist in time.
Pauls referance to Christ being made Sin...is "the Flesh".
Flesh does not sin. This verse is about justification and legal status:'God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.' 2 Cor 5:2 NIV

he certainly existed in time when he made that statement...and the word is for us who exist in time...regardless...you can not be un-forsaken. it was the cricifiction of the flesh of God that condenmed sin..so..that we could be made the righteousness of God. ...in him.. is NO SIN. to be sin from a moral perspective, or to have content of sin, you would be sinfull,if you live according to the flesh...YOU WILL DIE but if you crucify the flesh...........YOU WIL LIVEthe entire premise of our righteousness in Him..is dependant on our abillity to crucify the flesh with all of it's lustfull pasions......My friend..flesh is Sin!
