You won't find "Tongues were used to preach the gospel" in the Bible, The closest you can get to it is in 1 Corinthians 14:21,, where Paul says, "In the law it is written, with men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; yet they will not hear me". Paul is quoting from Isaiah 28: 11--12.In v 19 Paul says, "I'd rather speak five words with my understanding, to teach others, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue"some people, Jehovah's witnesses being one of them, says Acts 2: 4-11,was for the purpose of preaching the word of God, But if you look at v 11, They was speaking the wonderful works of God, Not teaching or praching. And in v13 & 15, people thought they were drunk.

THis is what I am finding out through my research in the word. In Mark 16:14-20, the disciples were to preach and the believers were going to speak with new tongues.Acts 2:11, The spoke in tongues the wonderful works of God.vs.14 Peter preached. When Peter preached to Cornelius, they spoke in tongues and magnified God.Acts 19:4-6 Paul Preached, Believers spake with tongues and prophesied.

This is often done through modern day prophets. As was said it is a Holy Spirit thing. Most church prophets do not use tongues simply because you have to get the word across in a langauge people can understand.

You are right if they spoke Hebrew they could suddenly speak new Languages they could speak in Greek or French it was only unknown to them as their native language. Any child that was not a tongue speaker could understand this fine its only a desire by those who speak in tongues to see something that is not there This is talking foreign languages New one that they did not know the day before this was the gift to be able to teach the Good News of Jesus Christ to the nations it has nothing to do with unintellible mutterings. We Are to prophesize which means teach Gods Word and Gods propheseys not your own

Kriss, I will not debate the tongue issue with you because we see it different. I have said from the beginning it was a language not known by the speaker. That said, in the scriptures mentioned here I see that the preaching the gospel and the tongues are seperate. Therefore tongues are not for spreading the gospel. They are for the church, to edify, exhort, and comfortNotice in these scriptures the difference in preaching and tongues: Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Here the disciples preached-the believers will speak in tongues etc.Acts2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: Here the believers spoke in tongues praising God-Peter preached.Acts 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Here Peter preached-Gentiles spoke in tongues praising God.Act 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied Paul preached-believers spoke in tongues AND prophesied. What I am saying is that the manifestation of the gifts are not to spread the gospel, it is to build up the church that has already heard the gospel. The biggest problem with the gifts of the spirit is that most people do not understand the purpose of them, including me, because I am still searching and learning. I came across this in my studies and it spoke to me of the purpose of tongues. It is to praise, magnify God. I do not see it as preaching the gospel.

Yes I know we do not agree on this but nothing you have shown above supports anything othewr than Language they preached the Word,The gospel in new Languages they never knew before this was a time when most never traveled more than a donkey ride from home had never heard forgien Languages and suddenly they were given a gift that when they went to Africa or Asia they could preach and teach in New Languages they had never known not that no one ever knewthe same would be true today if you went to a New country and wanted to preach and suddenly you could understand Farsee it would be a new Tongue to you but that has nothing to do with unitellagable muttering. Calling it a language is not correct a language is under stood by someone hopefully the speaker to just make sounds and claim it is a language you just do not understand is not even the diffention of language it must have rules

What do you think they were preaching ???? What was the Command they weren't interested in unitelligable muttering the command was GO FORTH AND Preach the Gospel to the World the world had never heard of Christianity and most never heard of Christ nor his prophecy's that's what the gift was for it was the gift of speaking and understanding all new and unknown to them languages of the peoples of the World so they could start the New christian church it had nothing to do with any babble or muttering. I realize nothing I can say is going to convince you I am not so much arguing with you as stating the facts that are written those that believe this is babble are going to swear it but those you can read the Words do not be mislead this is all natural foreign Languages of the WorldActs and 1 Cor have nothing much to do with each other they are two differnt things

I wonder would like to hear from one of you who swear this gift is some unknown unitellabable babble language how you think we would even have a christain church if the only thing people did was mutter their own prayers and thoughts. We are talking a few hundred people in Israel before the days of wide spread travel, telephones,TV,internet basically it was your feet and your mouth so how would this so called un-understable language teach people of Christ and start the New christain church?????

Did you read my post? The disciples were told to go and preach the gospel it did not say in tongues or the gift was given to preach the gospel. Praising God in tongues is more like singing to him, magnifying his name. Peter preached to them, it did not say in tongues. Where did they preach in tongues in the other scriptures?

Is there a record in history somewhere that the christians used tongues to preach?I am not in a church that speaks in tongues. Where do they babble all the time, and that is all they do? My Bible teaches that tongues is a small part of service if at all.

They didnt thats my point The verse's used to claim there is this unknown language is about the gifts given to follow Gods command and create the body of believers there was no seperate unitellagable language for praising God he in fact says its not for him if you speak anything no one can understand it helps no one It is simply preaching to yourself and if you do not understand what you are saying to God you are in trouble. He never told anyone to do this. If you read the word as it was written there is no teaching about a gift of babbel so what then do you base this belief on. Futher more sense this unitellable language didnt exsist until the 1800's why would scripture even refer to it in the building of church bodyat that time. ???

Kriss, this thread is not about whether tongues is babble or languages. It is whether tongues were used to preach or not. I can not understand your post in regard to the first question. Where in scripture does it say that tongues were for preaching?

I just have to make loathing statement here...I was TOLD by a Pentecostal person TWO days ago, that I don't have the Holy Ghost if I don't speak in tongue.Jag says: When a human starts saying that junk, you could obviously tell that he hath a devil in him/her. God wants us to understand His Words and prophesy His Words to the whole world. Then this person go on and to say that "Tongue" is a foreign language that you unlearned,Jag says: Well, then it makes me to know that I am unlearned in Spanish, French, German.God is no author of confusion. (I Corinthians 14:33) We are commanded to preach Truth, not to be SO self-edify by preconceived ideas of men.JagLovest thou in Christ Yahshua, Lord and Saviour of the world.

I find it very hard to believe that so-called "babble" language would be used for the purpose of spreading the gospel or in any form of teaching. Afterall, Paul said, "unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. ( 1 Cor 14:9 ). However, I think Paul does make it clear that "tongues" are a gift of the Spirit. It seems the issue is whether these are other intellible languages or babble. In 1 Cor 13:1 Paul talks of the "tongues of men and angels", what are angel tongues? I don't know.In 1 Cor 14:2 Paul says anyone speaking in a tongue speaks not "to men but to God", and that no-one understands him - why would anyone do this in a foreign human language? However, it can be argued that a supernatural language is a more fluent way of bypassing the clumsiness of human tongue - but, again, what is the point in babbling if one doesn't even understand oneself what one is saying?I have been told when observing simultaneous tongues and interpretation, that talking in tongues (babbly version) often starts with only one or two words constantly repeated, yet the interpreter still interprets a complete version. I find this strange and difficult to accept - but it happens, and the messages are positive and in line with the bible message, hmmm. However, the mere fact that, clearly, disciples were given on occasions instant ability in other foreign languages is so extraordinary that I am reluctant to dismiss the idea that "babbly" tongues also exist(ed) albeit for personal benefit rather than for the church (unless interpreted).

Spiritual things are beyond our knowledge-when something is beyond our knowledge, we usually condemn it, criticize it, ignore it or write it off as unimportant. In my spiritual walk I find that if I can not understand with my mind things of the Bible. I pray and ask God to open my spiritual eyes, to see what he wants me to see. These gifts are SPIRITUAL and can not work without the HOLY SPIRIT. They were given to the church to edify, exhort and comfort the church. The church are believers called out by God through the Holy Spirit. Tongues were not given to preach the gospel! No one has showed me any different so far. Superjag, I would not let what others say in that spirit bother me. I know I was saved a long time before the gifts were manifested through me. The Bible says we are saved by grace(what God has already done). We are known by our fruits, not the gifts. BUT, the gifts do exist and they are for every believer. Not every believer will manifest all the gifts at once. But God is supernatural and so are his gifts. NONE of them can be manifested without the Holy Spirit. There are other threads that discuss different types of spiritual gifts, but this thread is discussing if the tongues were given for preaching. Are they?
