:study: Perhaps you know the empty feeling that comes with losing o loved one in death. How very sad and helpless you can feel. It is only natural to ask; What happens to a person when he dies? Is he still alive somewhere? Will the living ever again be able to enjoy on earth the company of those now dead?To answer such a question, it will be a help for us to know what happened to Adam at his death. When Adam sinned, God told him; "You [will] return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return". [Genesis 3:19] Think of what that means. Before God created Adam from dust, there was no Adam. He did not exist. So, after Adam died, Adam returned to that same state of nonexistence.Simply stated, death is the opposite of life. Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 according to the Authorized or KJV says; " For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing," neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."This means that the dead cannot do anything and cannot feel anything. They no longer have any thoughts, as the Bible states; "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground [grave]; in that day his thoughts do perish". [Psalms 146:3,4] According to the Bible, the dead enter a state of complete inconsciousness.

The Bible says that the dead will be raised to life, so that cannot be a correct interpretation. This passage refers to death of the human body only. It is really a generalised link of sin with mortality of the body, rather than a view of what actually happens to people when they die. Yes, the body was known to be corrupted and to return to 'dust', what we now may call the biosphere. The soul, rather than the body, was considered to be resting or sleeping:'Then David rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.' 1 Kings 2:10 NIV'We believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.' 1 Thess 4:14-15 NIV

For the saints, of course.

Ecclesiastes 12 has two verses that say it better than any.Ecclesiastes 12:6-7Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.The first section is, metaphorically, refering to the body as a creation of God such as the creations of man will break. Upon death, your body returns (decomposes) back to the earth from whence it was created. Your soul, which belongs to God, returns to God, for:Ezekiel 18:4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

In dealing with the question of death, I think that it is vital to distinguish physical death from spiritual death. [list type=decimal][*]Physical death is associated with our human flesh. By testimony of scriptures, the flesh is made of clay and will return back to the dust. In essence, human life is ephemeral. As a result, physical death is the expiration of time that our body has to live.[*]Spiritual death is associated with our human soul. By testimony of scriptures, God breathe a breath of life into Adam and he became a living soul. God's breath, same as God's word is eternal. Spiritual death isn't a factor predicated upon an expiration of time. Rather, it is when our human soul has become severed from God's light. As such, it moves into spiritual darkness and becomes lost. The beauty of spiritual death is that our human soul can return back to the light and be resurrected to a new life.[/list]Jesus was born of the Holy Ghost as a quickening spirit. The Holy Ghost is the spoken word of God. Thus, Jesus is the incarnation of God's word and/or the Son of God. The Holy Ghost made it possible for the Son of God to overcome spiritual death. As such, Jesus was resurrected from the dead.To answer your question as to what happens after death? First, I presume that you are speaking in the context of physical death. Our human soul, that remains within our flesh, will be buried with us inside our grave or coffin, unless we have been cremated. No matter which process of our burial, our soul will have to become purified by fire prior to us entering into heaven. God has established two distinct modes of purification by fire since the foundation of the world. The most painful mode of purification is by the perdition of hell fire. Our soul, one way or the other will make its way through the crust of the earth down to the molten lava that is beneath the earth. Certain scriptures depict the term fire and brimstone. The temperature ranges from 750 degrees to 1250 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of Celsius is 100 degrees. Thus, the molten rocks heat seven to ten times of boiling. The heat is hot enough to melt the molten rock to appear as a lake of fire. When our soul enters into the lake of fire it will remain there until earth passes away. The second mode of purification is baptism by fire and the Holy Ghost. To qualify for the latter one must have received the Comforter. The Comforter, same as the Holy Ghost is God's spoken word. The Comforter knows the sound of Jesus voice in a spiritual context. The scriptures provides us testimony that Jesus will call each of us from the dead. In order that we hear him and rise, it is imperative that we have the Comforter with us in our grave and/or coffin. The Good News is that if our human soul is able to hear Jesus' voice as it lies dormant with our dead physical body, then it will avoid the Second Death of the Lake of fire and/or the perdition of hell. Consequently, baptism by fire or the Holy Ghost is the safest route to purification and/or heaven.Bear in mind that heaven is a clean place where God lives. There isn't any dirt, filth, trash or garbage to corrupt God's Kingdom. All impurities are dumped here on earth as a waste field. God burns His waste, same as we burn our waste.Inevitably, each child of God will make it home to heaven. The question is when and/or how. We can either travel with Jesus and the Holy Ghost or we can take the old path alone through the Lake of fire. The former is more preferable to the latter. God allows us to choose our own route. The Bible is similar to a road map that lays out which passage to follow. The passage way is divided in half as the OT and the NT. The Gospel is merely indicating a new direction to follow Jesus as the incarnation of God's word.
2Pet3[7] But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Amen!

Hi, For discussion sake, what scripture points to the soul going to heaven at death? I hope you find this to be a valid question since we may be assuming a great deal without such scripture. What is a soul? Adam "became a living soul," not that God "put" a living soul into him. That is fair to say. Gen. 2:7, soul is nephesh. It is the exact same word in Genesis 1:21 referring to living "creature" (nephesh). In Genesis 2:19, Adam was asked to name every living "creature"--again the Hebrew expression is nephesh. The first lie in the garden from Satan was, "You shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4, 5). "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing" (Ecc. 9:2,5). "...the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone has immortality" (1 Tim. 6:15, 16). Where do we draw the line, does the "soul" go to heaven when the body dies since they are regarded as a separate entity? ... Historical evidence points to Plato's teaching of a dualistic nature, separate entities, soul and body. The Catholics, as you know, took this page right out of Plato's teachings. Many reformers, two specifically, protested against such. Luther and Tyndale. Why do we accept Plato and and the Catholics viewpoint and we seem to denounce the reformers teaching which is Biblical based? Something to consider:MARTIN LUTHER (1493-1546), German Reformer and Bible translator "That the bread and wine are transubstantiated in the sacrament; that the essence of God neither generates nor is generated; that the soul is the substantial form of the human body that he [the pope] is emperor of the world and king of heaven, and earthly god; that the soul is immortal; and all these endless monstrosities in the Roman dunghill of decretals." Martin Luther, Assertio Omnium Articulorum M. Lutheri per Bullam Leonis X. Novissimam Damnatorum (Assertion of all the articles of M. Luther condemned by the latest Bull of Leo X), article 27, Weimar edition of Luther's Works, vol. 7, pp. 131, 132 (a point-by-point exposition of his position, written Dec. 1, 1520, in response to requests for a fuller treatment than that given in his Adversus execrabilem Antichristi Bullam, and Wider die Bulle des Endchrists).WILLIAM TYNDALE (1484-1536), English Bible translator and martyr"And ye, in putting them [the departed souls] in heaven, hell, and purgatory, destroy the arguments wherewith Christ and Paul prove the resurrection.... And again, if the souls be in heaven, tell me why they be not in as good case as the angels be) And then what cause is there of the resurrection?"—William Tyndale, An Answer to Sir Thomas More's Dialogue (Parker's 1850 reprint), bk. 4, ch. 4, pp. 180, 181."The true faith putteth [setteth forth] the resurrection, which we be warned to look for every hour. The heathen philosophers, denying that, did put [set forth] that the souls did ever live. And the pope joineth the spiritual doctrine of Christ and the fleshly doctrine of philosophers together; things so contrary that they cannot agree, no more than the Spirit and the flesh do in a Christian man. And because the fleshly-minded pope consenteth unto heathen doctrine, therefore he corrupteth the Scripture to stablish it."—lbid., p. 180.John S.

Let's look at the whole verse to put it proper context.Genesis 2:7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. The Hebrew for man here is eth-Ha-Adham which differs from that of 'adam used in Genesis 1:26. It's quite accurate to use "put" here because God clearly constructed Adam's physical body then "breathed" the soul - Hebrew naphach.Again, I'm really starting to grow tired of the lies and tremendous assumptions that you make about what I say. All souls are God and they return to him when they die - there is no purgatory and no holding chamber. What does it say plain as day right there in the Bible that I cited and you even quoted??Ecclesiastes 12:6-7Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.Luther nor Tyndale wrote it - GOD wrote it right there for you in his letter to you and me! The souls, which all belong to God regardless of on which side you fall return to Him for judgment. I believe Luther did a lot of good, but if you want to go with a man who was known for calling his opponents ridiculous and vulgar names over the Word of God then be my guest. However, Luther and Tyndale don't speak for John's and Denver's appearance before God on the throne of judgment.

Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 according to the Authorized or KJV says; " For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing," neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
This is referring to the physical body which returns to the earth.
They no longer have any thoughts, as the Bible states; "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground [grave]; in that day his thoughts do perish". [Psalms 146:3,4]
Again, this is referring to the physical body.

:What happens to a person when he dies?
The Bible is quite clear what happens when we die:- When we die, time stops for us and we go into a "sleep of death" to await Judgement Day:- "Don't grieve for those asleep, for they sleep in Jesus" (1 Thess 4:13/14) Then on Judgement Day,christians AND nonchristians get a wake-up call:- As Jesus said:- "ALL in the graves shall come out,to resurrection or damnation" (John 5:28/29) Then the christians are whisked off to heaven, but the nonchristians are:- "Thrown screaming into the fire" (Matt 13:41/42) forever - Jesus said "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life" (Matt 25:46)They had their chance when they were alive on earth:-"It's dreadful to fall into the hands of God for trampling his son underfoot" (Heb 10:29-31)Hence the terrible warning:- "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philip 2:12)

**************"Sleep" in this context mean death, not sleep as we know it. When we are absent from the body, Apostle Paul tells us, we are present with the Lord.Jesus said God is God of the living; not the dead. When we die we instantly go to God; we do not sleep, we are very much awake.Check out Greek and Hebrew words in a concordance to see what the real meanings of words are. I use a Strong's Concordance.

Yes, 'sleep' is just an innocent term used by the Bible to remind us that death isn't final, it's just a brief nap

You're contradicting Genesis 2:7 which says. "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." This scripture clearly teaches that God took dust from the ground formed it into a flesh and blood human body then God blew the breath of life(spirit) into the flesh and blood human body and that flesh and blood human body became a living soul or living person. So any person saying that the breath of life(spirit) separately on it's own without being in a flesh and blood human body is a living soul or living person is contradicting Genesis 2:7. So when the breath of life(spirit) leaves the flesh and blood human body, the flesh and blood human body ceases to exist as a living soul or living person.
1Thessalonians 4:14,15 is talking about the resurrection of the dead for those who will be kings, priests, and judges with Jesus in that heavenly messianic kingdom. This takes place during the second presence of Jesus Christ. These that have died in Christ are resurrected back into existence as living persons during Jesus Christ second presence.

How did you find this thread anyways, it's 16 years old. But hey I'll weigh in...

When we die we either go to prison or paradise. That's what the bible teaches in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

When we die we either go to prison or paradise. That's what the bible teaches in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

The parable of the Rich man and Lazarus is just that, a parable, not a realistic story of something that actually or literally happened. The story which is a parable isn't to be taken literally. The story meant something other than what was literally being said. That's why it's a parable which means it's a story that is to be interpreted to reveal a hidden truth.
When a person is in deep sleep (Rem sleep) he/she is unaware of surroundings which when you don't exist as a living person you certainly don't have any awareness. So yes the scriptures likens death as sleeping.
Whenever you talk about the death of the human being it means that the breath of life(spirit) has left the human body, but if at the death of a human being which the breath of life(spirit) has left the human body someone teaches that this breath of life(spirit) is a living soul or living person coming out of the human body, then that person is contradicting Genesis 2:7. This scripture clearly doesn't teach that the breath of life (spirit) separately, on it's own without being in a human body to be a living soul or living person. It's the combination of the flesh and blood human body with the breath of life(spirit) in that flesh and blood human body that makes a living soul or living person. So that breath of life(spirit) separately, on it's own, not in a flesh and blood human body isn't a living soul or living person. So when the breath of life(spirit) leaves the flesh and blood human body that flesh and blood human body no longer is a living soul or living person because that living soul or living person ceases to exist, that's what death is, you stop existing as a living soul or living person.
When the breath of life(spirit) leaves the flesh and blood human body, the flesh and blood human body is no longer a living soul it instead is a dead soul.

Ah, ah... balderdash!

Your original post is relying ONLY on Old Testament Scripture, and the Jew's religion, for it is they that believe the soul is part of our flesh when it is not (Matthew 10:28). They do not heed... The New Testament, so they are completely ignorant of Scripture of what happens at flesh death...

2 Cor 5:1-9
5 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:

3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

5 Now He That hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, Who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of Him.
KJV

Even in Ecclesiastes, Solomon in final showed what happens at flesh death, and even about a "silver cord" that is severed at death, allowing each separate part to go their own way, our flesh back to the earthly elements where it came from, and our spirit goes back to God Who gave it, which MUST be about our soul and the above spirit body Paul pointed to!

Eccl 12:5-7
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
KJV

So the orthodox Jews don't even believe their own Old Testament Scriptures they claim regarding flesh death!

The state of suspended animation that all humans experience after death, for however many years pass; is for the dead person, an instant transition from life: to standing with all the rest of the dead before the Great White Throne Judgement of God. Revelation 20:11-15

Scripture says that when a person dies their soul goes back to God, who made it and because with God there is no time; then at the Great White Throne Judgement, after the Millennium, that soul; along with every soul that ever lived, is made conscious again at the time of Judgement. Revelation 20:12, There is no knowledge of any time passing between death and Judgement, just as Hebrews 9:27 says; It is the human lot to die once, then comes the Judgement.

Jesus said about Lazarus: He has fallen asleep… but then He clarified that Lazarus was really dead. John 11:11-14 Paul often mentions those who sleep in death.
So Lazarus’s resurrection was a preview of the saints raised with Jesus at His resurrection and those martyrs who will be raised at His Return, Revelation 20:4
They all received and will receive mortal bodies, that can be subject to death again.

But as Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:50-56, there will be some Christians alive at the end of the Millennium, who will never die, they will be transformed at the time of Judgement into immortality, along with all the rest whose names are written in the Book of Life.

The parable about Abraham and Lazarus, the beggar: is a scene AFTER that GWT Judgement, a homily for all to realize what our fate will be if we refuse to honor God.

The flesh we currently inhabit will not be reconstituted, those worthy to go into Eternity with God will be spiritual beings. Matthew 22:30 In the resurrection…..they are like the angels in heaven.

Job 14:10-15 When a human dies, all his power vanishes, he is like a dried up river. So mortal man lies down and never to rise, until the heavens be no more!

Lord, I ask that You hide me in the grave, conceal me until Your wrath has passed, then Lord; remember me at Your appointed time! I will wait, however long it takes for the change to come. Then, You will summon me and I will answer: I am the work of Your hands.

The sequence is:
1/ We all die. The only exceptions will be those remaining alive at the end of the Millennium. 1 Corinthians 15:50-56
Eccl 12:7, Isaiah 38:10-11, Acts 13:36

2/ The Lord’s wrath will pass; all as is prophesied to happen. Revelation 15:1

3/ The dead know nothing until the Appointed time for the Great White Throne Judgement, when everyone who has ever lived will stand before God in Judgment and there will be new heavens and a new earth. Revelation 21:1-4

4/ Then, for those whose names are written in the Book of Life, the change will come; into immortality for Eternity. As described in 1 Corinthians 15:50-56.

At Lord Jesus' resurrection, He went to the pit prison and preached The Gospel to the "spirits in prison", i.e., those who had died back to the days of Noah. Isaiah 42:7 was the prophecy that Jesus would do that, and lead the prisoners out of the darkness of that pit prison (see 1 Peter 3 & 1 Peter 4).

So that could not happen if when we die we immediately go into a spiritual hibernation.

Jesus even questioned the ignorant about their asleep in the ground with the following question...

Luke 20:37-38
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 For He is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto Him.
KJV

In the Heavenly dimension, the idea of "the dead" is about the spiritual dead, i.e., those who are unsaved and without Christ Jesus. Yet they are still manifest in their spiritual bodies of 2 Corinthians 5 in that Heavenly dimension. This is why Jesus even told the malefactor crucified with Him that believe on Him, that that day he would be with Jesus in Paradise. Jesus saying that also points to the story of Lazarus and the rich man of Luke 16 was a description of reality about the other dimension of the Heavenly where they were immediately after they had died.

And my favorite modern evidence all this is so...
