Before Jesus, do you believe people went to some bad place in the afterlife?

Scott...I'm not picking on you, per se ...but, I have never known a group...Christians... so hung up on death.... in my life....when there is no death....ever.
Uh-oh did I just start a new tangent?
Not sure what you mean.

I was quoting scripture. It is appointed once to die for all. The difference is that in Christ, He embodies both those of the old covenant who died in the flesh, and also those who receive life by the spirit of God while in the body (which dies according to the old covenant).

I am trying to process the difference. Stephen went to sleep. I would not call Stephen dead but rather alive in Christ. More alive than most walking dead among the world and deceived. The death I speak of is "dead in trespasses and sins" and "we were dead in sins". Being without God...is dead. Speaking Spiritually dead, not really focusing attention on the physical body. Once alive in Christ there is no more death, but only sleep. I see, both the Lord Jesus must awake us from?? From sleep and "dead in sin" ?
thanks for the response VJ. there is natural death, but there is a second death which is no coming back from. supportive scripture, Matthew 10:28 "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell".

No death? Not even so that you may have life?
What do you mean "there is no death...ever?"
Gee, Victory, I'm sorry,
did I say something new? We never die...we are eternal spirits in God...created
In His image...of Him...ever, ever, forever part of Him.
Where would we go? Wherever I go there He is....it's quite wonderful when one realizes this...we are eternal ... right along with God Himself ! ☺

That which is born of God (Spirit) does not die. You are correct. But what about the flesh? Where does it go?

Is it not possible for a person who does not belong to a designated Christian church to be in Jesus Name by his heart and by his life as he lives it? Of course to help understand what I mean consider the contrary: a person who does belong to a designated Christian church but is never in Jesus Name by his heart and by his life as he lives it.

What does it mean to be IN Jesus name?
if i understand you correctly then yes it is possible for a person to be a christian without being part of a church still live a life worthy of Christ. in Jesus' name is saying that what you are doing is being done because of God's gifts to us christians. God's gifts cover a large area like authority, peace, healing, and ect.

God bless

GINOLJC, to all. addressing the OP. any place (a state of mind) is bad if you're not with the Lord Jesus, before he came or after. bottom line, Micheal Jackson song says it the best "Got to be there".

I get what you are saying about death. A persons death to all the wants and desires of this world, and they wake up to paradise lost. I think that is what you mean.
if waking up to paradise lost is a good thing, then ya, pretty much. Of course your id will not disappear anyway, but your ego basically cannot come with it i guess

Sheol, the hell we all go to when we die, the same hell Jesus went to when he died. I'm sure you know this already though.
Sheol is not hell though, as you even state in other contexts--in the same para even?--and you can't Quote Christ going to either one anyway? I mean here, show me where hell is in here if you would

or Sheol, or Gehenna? Not There. Straight misinterpretation. wadr

Sheol is referred to as hell throughout the new testament and even the old testament in the KJV Bible, in psalms 16:10 and Acts 2. There is no "misinterpretation", hell and the different versions thereof has been misrepresented by the many Christian's as always referring to a place of torment.

after the translators get done with it, sure lol, but i haven't read those in years tbh, so Sheol is still just Sheol to me.
So, sorry about the misunderstanding, but the point is that you cannot Quote Jesus going to either one, right?
There is no "misinterpretation"
but you can't Quote it, either, yet here you are stating opinions as facts wadr

hell is a place of torment, and Sheol is not, in my understanding at least, so we are discussing at cross-purposes i guess.
I mostly agree with you in spirit here imo

It depends on what the definition of paradise is. If paradise is this world and buzzing right along blind saying, "I am going to get mine"...Then, yes, it is good when God steps in your path.
