I think everyone here remembers from Sunday School, that gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. Not only that, heart disease caused by over-consumption is the number one killer of North Americans cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htmThings to think about.1) The food eaten by the sinner could instead go to the hungry and homeless.2) The money used to treat the gluttonous sinner's heart disease and associated health risks, could instead go to other charitable causes.3) Curing your sin is as simple as not eating excessively! It doesn't require any money or Herculean effort.4) If you maintain an unhealthy lifestyle, you are essentially commmitting a slow form of suicide, which we know the Lord frowns upon.5) I think it is the duty of every Christian to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and to help other Christians do so.6) This is perhaps to easiest sin to rectify. If you are concerned about your health, you can check your BMI here nhlbisupport.com/bmi/Anyhow, I think this is the worst problem plaguing Christianity today, much worse than abortion or alternative lifestyles.

DUMBEST THREAD EVER!Gluttony is excessive over eating and Binge Drinking. Obesity is caused by a number of factors, genetics, medication, high carbohydrate diets promoted by the government.Notice how everyone remains silent on the drinking part.

The #1 cause of obesity is shoving massive quantities of food down your throat. Yes there are other factors but overeating is #1.

I agree, but even more important are the reasons why people do this. Animals generally don't. The main reasons for obesity are the reasons why people stuff, not just that they do. Any ideas why? Something missing from life, perhaps? That God-shaped something? Maybe....

I think you guys are being a little narrow mined here gluttony is not the unforgivable sin and being over weight is not a sin and there are many reasons and its not ours to judge but gluttony can not be confined to food are you a glutten on the computer, video games, soft drinks, text messaging, telephone, music ,T.V. gluttony is overindulging in anything which of you can cast the first stoneGluttony:1. Given to or marked by gluttony.excess in eating or drinking 2. Indulging in something, such as an activity, to excess; voracious. greedy or excessive indulgence

I think there is only one unforgivable sin? But even if we agree that obesity is not in itself a sin, I think one has to look at the whole picture to see the wrong in it. Obesity, if purely due to overeating, means that one has consumed more than one's own body requires. In every town in the world there are others who are suffering from a deficit in nutrition, medical aid, counselling, etc. If one person consumes more than one's own requirement of "manna" knowing that someone else is short of their needs, then one is going against God's instructions for sharing and Jesus' "commandment" to love one another. Also, the body is the temple for the indwelling Holy Spirit. Do we not have a duty to care for it accordingly? Also, obesity leads to unnecessary health costs by society which could be better used elsewhere. In a recent program discussing the effects of oil running out (we are already apparently past peak production capacity), it was argued that the world will no longer be able to support feeding any near as many people as there are at present - and the global population is still expanding rapidly. In this light, it is a duty to humankind in general to be sensible about all forms of consumption, not just food wastage. But perhaps an even worse example of waste that is only indirectly related to obesity is the habit of foodstores to throw away tons and tons of perfectly good food. For example, as soon as a new shipment arrives, all the "old" is jettisoned even though stilll prior to its "sell by" date. This is simply to meet the requirements of the customer to always have the freshest possible.

I can not disagree with you Kalixx but my point was that gluttony is excessive indulgence in anything to confine it to obesity is in error We are a gluttonus societywhether it be oil or food or a closet full of clothes we are all gluttons in one way or the other. So to sit in judgement of a person who is overweight by just assuming they are over indulging in food is wrong perhaps they are taking medication that causes this ect.Im not saying that the main cause of obesity is not our over eating it most likly isbut unless one has never been guilty of any over indulgence in anything We have no right to judge anybody to even suggest if an overweight person should be excumicated when one is most likley guilty of gluttony themselves on some level seems to me the pot calling the kettle black mentallity. A my sin isnt as bad as your sin attitude.
