Being baptized in Christ's name is different from being baptized in water. You are saved once you repent and ask into Jesus' family. There is also a baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism is a symbol in my opinion. However, I could be wrong.

could you give me the bible verse that says water baptism is just a symbol ?because the above verses certainly say baptism is much much more.so there are two baptism not one as scripture say's?what about the verses that says the holy spirit comes when one is baptized with water?and why then did the holy spirit come when Jesus was baptized with water?and why then do we not see Jesus baptized in this other way?The apostles were baptized with water but they had not yet received the "Gifts"of the holy spirit .they had the holy spirit but they did not yet have the special gifts the holy spirit was going to give them.after the gifts were given remmember they could talk to others in their own language.imagine some on that could only speak greek could now talk about Jesus to a another person who talked only hebrew.

Christ replaced (became/was the living water)the Water with spirit which is why John said I baptise with water but one will come that will baptise with the Holy spiritLuk 3:16 John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Alright. So when you repent, you're baptized with the Holy Spirit?

Christians always interpreted the Bible literally when it declares, "Baptism . . . now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 3:21; cf. Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rom. 6:3–4, Col. 2:11–12), and they have always interpreted that as WATER BAPTISM. Thus the early Church Fathers wrote in the Nicene Creed (A.D. 381), "We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins." And the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "The Lord himself affirms that baptism is necessary for salvation [John 3:5]. . . . Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament [Mark 16:16]" (CCC 1257). The Christian belief that water baptism is necessary for salvation is so unshakable that even the Protestant Martin Luther affirmed the necessity of baptism. He wrote: "Baptism is no human plaything but is instituted by God himself. Moreover, it is solemnly and strictly commanded that we must be baptized or we shall not be saved. We are not to regard it as an indifferent matter, then, like putting on a new red coat. It is of the greatest importance that we regard baptism as excellent, glorious, and exalted" (Large Catechism 4:6). Still, even though the necessity of water baptism is a normative, there are exceptions to water baptism. It is possible to be saved through "baptism of blood," martyrdom for Christ, or through "baptism of desire", that is, an explicit or even implicit desire for baptism. This applies to, say, the Good Thief on the cross. Thus the Catechism of the Catholic Church also states: "Those who die for the faith, those who are catechumens, and all those who, without knowing of the Church but acting under the inspiration of grace, seek God sincerely and strive to fulfill his will, are saved even if they have not been baptized" (CCC 1281; the salvation of unbaptized infants is also possible under this system; cf. CCC 1260–1, 1283).I suggest you read the first seven links on this page:http://www.catholic.com/library/sacraments.asp

Jesus Christ Himself insisted on water baptism. If it was that important for Him it should be at least as important for us. Think of it this way - what do you really have to lose by being baptised with water? Aside from pride and a little body heat.

I think that we might want to consider when it was that Christ was baptised by water...it was before His death and resurrection, before He spoke of baptism of the Holy Spirit..Chirst's insistance of being baptised in water if you will remember correctly was to fulfill all righteousness. Mat 3:15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. I do not recall one verse that Christ says we must be baptised by water in order to be saved. And if this were the case those who come to Christ before they die and are not baptised in water have wasted their breath. Below are the requirements of salvation:Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Baptism of water does not save a person...however, it was part of the doctrine of the early church as has been pointed out. But nowhere is it stated that I have ever read even in the epistles that in order to be saved water baptism was a requirement.

Horsecamp, Which baptism do you mean, you have listed two baptisms, and the Bible mentions Three baptisms. I know Ephesians 4: 5. says there is "One baptism". but Hebrews 6: 2. says, "The docrine of baptisms". [Plural].
