What's a good Bible study program? I know most of the stories of the Bible due to going to a Christian elementary and High School, but I don't know my Bible that well. Some people say to read and study from beginning to end, and others say to begin in the New Testament and then go back to the Old Testament. What's a good way to read and study? For now I've been Trying to memorize special and important passages and verses on note cards. I don't want to one who just reads the Bible but doesn't get a better understanding and truly know it.

That looks great, but I'm always kinda apprehensive of any Bible study course where I have to purchase their materials. If the word should be freely given and spread, shouldn't I be able to use my materials and just follow a reading plan?

I feel that since we are Christians, we should learn first what is required to be Christian's. We should read the New Testament, and using a study bible, if it cross references to the Old Testament, check it out. Once you are comfortable with that, go and learn some of our history, and the personality of God in the OT.

You don't need to memorize the Bible, all you need to do is read. Quoting the Bible to othersshould be a spontaneous thing, as it is not you but the Holy Spirit within you who is doing it.If you have forgotten a verse, what you can do is search for it using a Bible program such ase-sword, http://www.e-sword.net/ or do an online Bible search. Memorization by verse is not biblical,The apostles would quote the words of our Lord and the prophets, but they did not specify the verse. It is the Holy Spirit who would bring into our remembrance the words of our Lord, and it is theHoly Spirit who would reveal to us verses that are difficult at the proper time. Read the New Testamentfirst."And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,'Fear not, daughter of Zion;behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!'His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him." John 12:14-16 (ESV)"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,he will teach you all things and bring to your remembranceall that I have said to you." John 14:26 (ESV)"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." John 16:13 (ESV)

Thanks for the advice. I just get so many conflicting messages about how to read/ study the Bible. Most times it's from people preachers who want me to follow/join their church.

I don't memorize scripture verses. I do recall them when I need them, but not the chapter:verse. Reading the Bible is what is important as was said already. Learning to defend your faith to me is important, so reading about apologetics is important to a point too.

I have been reading and studying the bible for about 20 years now. I am no scholar just someone who wants to know more about my Lord. I have found that when needed the Holy Spirit brings to mind the words I need to say so I don't memorize the bible. I have a memory problem so I couldn't memorize the bible anyway. Also the studying I have done has always seemed to be something that God has brought up at that time for me to learn. For example not long after I became a Christian God had me study about His love and when I had completed that He had me study biblical meditation. I am now strongly grounded in His love and the way we are to meditate on the scripture because of this. The studying I do is always at His instigation.
