Hey I wanted to know which is the better not best Bible to get? There are so many versions. There's the King James, New King James the NIV, American Standard, the Message, the living Bible, etc. I want, no need one that not only I can understand but has not be "watered down" where the original message could be lost. Right now I have a NKJ Pocket Companion and The Student Bible (NIV) The NIV is easier than the NKJV with the thous and the thy but when I want to write down a passage or verse to memorize I'm torn between which I should use. I've also across times when, in letters that I write to friends, I get corrected or ridiculed depending on what version I use to make a quotation. What do I do?

Walking I really like my NKJV Extreme. It is easy to read, and also has a lot of study in it. I also use the KJV and some times NIV. I do not believe that any one is more important than the other.

Yeah I don't believe that there is one that is more important than another, just which is overall a better choice to use. Right now I have a Bible Commentary and Concordance that is for the NKJ I use the Concordance when I'm looking up a topic to discuss with my friends.

I use the NIV, but that's because it was purchased for me by a loved one. At the time, I wouldn't have understood the difference, and so I left the version choice up to him. Because him and his family use this version as well.Honestly, the only way to figure it out is to compare Bibles across translations. Go to a library that has Bibles and go through and find popular and/or random scriptures and compare across Bibles to see the similarities/differences. Then, you can decide which is best for you.As for worrying what others say, they shouldn't be ridiculing you at all! What kind of friend would do that? Just find a simple sentence to say to them when they do that. Something like "I am reading God's Word, the translation is just fine, thank you." Then, you just have to let it go. It sounds to me like you are letting your friends push you to something you may not be the most comfortable with. Use whatever translation you want, and don't let them get to you.

Thanks I know that I shouldn't let others direct my actions especially when it comes to my path to Christ, but peer pressure work on many. Before I came to Christ I was still very much into theology and had read some articles about the various translations and who funded them and for what end. I know that through the ages language changes, but I have also been interested to look at how various translations have been used to "genderfy" or or to support various doctrines.

As has been stated don't let anyone push you into a particular version of the bible. I use the KJV and the MKJV but I do have other versions that I use also when studying. My children all used the 'Good News' version as it was the easiest for them to understand. The suggestion about the library was a good one. Just remember that it is no good having a bible version to please others if you don't understand it. I agree that true friends would NOT ridicule the version you have - they should be pleased you understand it and are trying to learn.

I use NIV and KJV but their are people on here who will tell you the KJV is the only one you should use because the others have differences in translation. But they don't account for the fact that the KJV is just another translation of older versions. That is why I am trying to learn Greek and Hebrew so I can read the bible in its oldest and truest form but I believe most of the english versions are fine.

I just got into a debate with a friend about the King James version. She first was on me for using the New King James and she said how translations can be skewed for peoples own reasons. I said how I want to lean to read Greek so I can read at least the New testament in it's original form b/c any translation is going to be not what was written. She then replied with "its the spirit" that the word teaches and so on. So I asked her right back "Why can't the spirit be in he New King James or the NIV? I got no reply and had to change topics before we got into a fight.

This happens when people get stuck in the idea that their way is best. You are right the Holy Spirit will guide you in understanding - and that can be with ANY version. I bet your friend would not expect you to read the bible in a language you couldn't read or speak so why expect you to read a version that you have trouble understanding. Stick to your guns with your friend as the mind needs enlightening too or you won't understand what the Holy Spirit is trying to say. We first understand something with our mind, then it sinks into our spirit(heart), then becomes a reality to us.

Well I just found a great example of why I had/ am having a diffcult time worshiping. I went to get myself a Bible at a local Christian Book store. There are so many different versions and then within the versions there are different types. Do you want the regular, or Study? Large print or one containing a concordance? Do you want one with Christ's words in red? Geez I just want to purchase a Bible. I pick one up thumb through it and it has a concordance in the back and center column verse references. Fine I just want a Bible. I get home and I was doing Subject Analyis on Parience I found out that this was not a regular King James Bible (Yes that's what I ended up getting) It had comments on the bottom of each page by a certen person. I don't want to name this individual because it plainy explains which domination this Bible is suppose to be taught with. I don't belive in the domination's teachings and actually am kinda angry that they have added their own teachings directly in the Bible. I can't take it back b/c It was stated that there are no returns. I'm still going to use it, but I'm still aware of the comments at the bottom of each page.

walking4him I had a similar experience when I first turned to God. I was given a bible by a friend and took it home and started reading it. When another friend visited and saw me reading it she promptly took it off me. She gave me her bible instead, KJV, and told me that I had been given a JW bible and it would only fill my head with wrong teaching. It taught me to be careful with my bible versions. It also taught me to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide me with getting bibles. I do have different versions in my house now and I use them all when I study. I do have a JW bible again but only use it when I am speaking to them - they don't like me using it against them.

Hi, I have been reading this thread with interest. There are indeed some people who will say one particular version of the Bible is the only one and all others are heretical. But this is rubbish. I personally like the NIV because it is easy to understand and has no thees and thous. I think that when I read the Bible I want it to be in the English I use today and not in Old English. But if someone else is happy with the older style that is fine too.Despite what some might tell you, the NIV is a very accurate translation. It was taken directly from the earliest Hebrew and Greek documents available. I also like to use a Study Bible because it has notes about verses, terms, and other historical information that can help in my understanding of the text. But it did take some getting use to when I first got one. Again though it is really a personal preference. I also find the RSV Bible to be a good one. I also have several other translations on computer which I sometimes use as well. One thing that really annoys me though is the red letters. The whole book is God's word, why do Jesus' words need to be in red? But I am sure some people like it and that is fine.Go for the version you like and understand (except for those certain sects and cults you and Nyoka were talking about) and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.Happy reading! :study:

yes I also don't like the red lettering. It's a it's a way of saying this is the most important. I like study Bibles but like I mentioned the Bible that I picked up has study note according to this particular domination I hate to be picky, but I want God's word and God's word alone. I don't mind the thee and thou's but I don't like when I see examples of twisting even if it's just to make it more gender friendly or gender bias.

I do have a red letter version amongst my bibles. It is no better or worse than the others. How I find it helpful is if I want to find something Jesus said then it is easy to find in it, then I can study out the verse from there. My main bible is not a red letter version though.
