Hello @GodsGrace,

The Greek word in Strong's concordance is 'Tartaroo' (Str.No. G5020), in regard to 2 Peter 2:4; and that is the only place the word is translated in Scripture. Tartarus is a word used in Greek mythology.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris
I have always made the same mistake. Thank you.

Many who have died will be given a "second chance" by means of a resurrection from the dead, in which Jesus said: "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs (Greek mnemeion [meaning "a remembrance" or "any visible object for preserving or recalling the memory of any person or thing", not "grave" or Greek taphos as the King James Bible reads], being in God's memory [see Jesus words at Luke 20: 37, 38, whereby he says to the Sadducees "but that the dead are raised up, even Moses made known in the account about the thornbush, when he calls Jehovah ' the God of Abraham and God Isaac and God of Jacob. He is a God, not of the dead, but of the living, for they are all living to him"]) will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of (adverse) judgment".(John 5:28, 29)

At Job 14, Job recognizes how fragile life is and how quickly it ends in death, but argues that if a tree can sprout after its stump dies, should not man be able also to be restored to life.(Job 14:1-12) He states: "O that in the Grave (Hebrew sheol, meaning "place of concealment", a neutral place that does not determine whether one gets everlasting life or everlasting death, for this responsibility rests on Jesus shoulders as judge both in the "last day" and his "thousand year" reign, John 5:22; 6:40; Rev 20:13, 14) you (Jehovah God) would conceal me, that you would hide me until your anger passes by (Job felt that God was causing all his troubles, Job 9:17, unaware of Satan being the cause by God's permission, Job chps 1 & 2), that you would set a time limit for me and remember me. If a man dies, can he live again ? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service ("compulsory service", Hebrew tsaba meaning "a mass of persons organized for war", being compelled to be in the army without one's consent, so that Job knew he was forced to remain the grave) until my relief comes (by means of a resurrection from the dead). You (through Jesus as the one "decreed by God to be judge of the living and the dead", Acts 10:42; see also John 5:21) will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands (especially for obedient ones to see life again as the ' work of God's hands ' )".(Job 14:13-15)

And many are also given a "second chance" while alive now, for Jesus said: "Most truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes the One (Jehovah God) who sent me has everlasting life, and he does not come into judgment (or judged adversely) but has passed over from death to life".(John 5:24)

At Ephesians 2, the apostle Paul wrote: "Furthermore, God made you alive, though you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you at one time walked according to the system of things of this world, according to the ruler of the authority of the air (Satan), the spirit (or dominant force or attitude that emanates from Satan, that drives people to do bad things, their disposition) that is now at work in the sons of disobedience".(Eph 2:1, 2)

The "world" of mankind are those who are alienated from Jehovah God and are thus considered "dead" in his sight.(see Jesus words to a man who wanted to ' bury his father ' before going with him, telling him: "Let the dead bury their dead", Luke 9:59, 60)

Jesus gave the great commission that "this good news of the Kingdom" would be preached globally by his faithful disciples all the way down to "the end".(Matt 24:14) This God-ordained work, going from "house to house", is causing "deserving" ones to ' pass over from death to life '.(Matt 10:7, 11-13)

And regarding "hell", this word is archaic English, that in the 17th century when the King James Bible was written, meant "to conceal", not roast in a fire.("hell", Old English hel(l) . Ultimately from an Indo-European word meaning “to conceal", Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2005)

When other words were rendered as "hell" (or "hellfire") besides the Greek Hades (at Acts 2:31 that means mankind's common grave), such as Gehenna (Greek Geenna, at Matt 5:22 and that means everlasting destruction) and Tartarus (Greek Tartaroo, 2 Pet 2:4 and that means being blocked of any spiritual light from Jehovah or "dense darkness"), its original meaning of just being "concealed" (for example "helling" potatoes does not mean to roast them, but to "conceal" them, as in a cellar below the ground) was lost and a warped meaning became what many believe it is today, that of a place of fiery torment for wicked people.

At Jeremiah 32:35, Jehovah tells the apostate nation of Israel: "Furthermore, they built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, in order to make their sons and their daughters pass through the fire to Molech, something that I had not commanded them, and that had never come into my heart to do such a detestable thing, causing Judah to sin".

How could Jehovah God condemn the nation of Israel for their wickedness of burning their sons and daughters in the fire to Molech, calling it "detestable" and a "sin" if he is doing the same thing on a far greater scale ? Sadly, most never really carefully examine the Bible, but passes on what they have been told, without so much as a whimper, unwilling to reason on what the Bible really teaches.

These are not like the ones at Daniel 12:4: "As for you, Daniel, keep the words secret, and seal up the book, until the time of the end. Many will rove about ("looking under every rock" for clues, carefully examining the Bible from Genesis to Revelation in order to understand what is "the truth", see Jesus words at John 8:32), and the true knowledge will become abundant ".

Uhhhh, what did you do with your first chance? On which chance was the rich man of the Lazarus account?

I say let's do it right with chance number one. Turning a back to Jesus in this life ill affords second chances.

A man came and gave testimony at our church years ago. He was in horrible chronic pain from an accident and decided to end it all with a gunshot. Before he pulled the trigger God spoke to him for the first time ever. "son if you pull that trigger your troubles are only just beginning". He didn't, was saved and miraculously healed.

Didn't sound like he had a second chance waiting for him. No make up exams in God's eternal program.

Many who have died will be given a "second chance" by means of a resurrection from the dead, in which Jesus said:

Disagree in part.

It is the Body of flesh of all earthlings that was born IN SIN.
The first body, created, ie Adam. Not created in SIN, not born....but became SIN, and thereafter from his seed to the procreation of other men....all are born in sin.

The FIRST Chance for ALL born IN SIN, is to become cleansed and restored, BEFORE their body physically DIES.

DEAD FLESH BODIES, can not Make decisions to BELIEVE and submit to faithfulness IN God.

"Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs (Greek mnemeion [meaning "a remembrance" or "any visible object for preserving or recalling the memory of any person or thing", not "grave" or Greek taphos as the King James Bible reads], being in God's memory [see Jesus words at Luke 20: 37, 38, whereby he says to the Sadducees "but that the dead are raised up, even Moses made known in the account about the thornbush, when he calls Jehovah ' the God of Abraham and God Isaac and God of Jacob. He is a God, not of the dead, but of the living, for they are all living to him"]) will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of (adverse) judgment".(John 5:28, 29)

Some Faithful BODIES of men are IN their graves.
Some UN-Faithful BODIES of men are IN their graves.

ALL bodies shall be raised.
The Faithful, are raised UP TO God IN a Glorious Body.
The unFaithul are raise UP from their graves, TO down in Hell, in an UN-changed, UN-glorified body, to stand in the presence of the Judge.

NEITHER of the RAISED bodies...
The Faithful or the unFaithful are RAISED, WITH their "BODILY" LIFE (which the life of the body is their BLOOD)

The Faithful stand in THEIR Judgement, before the Lord, IN a glorious body, with their Saved Living soul, with their born again spirit, with the internal Spirit of God...
And THEIR Judgement is for ALL their "works" that Glorifed Gods Name on earth.

The UN-faithful stand in THEIR Judgement
Before the Lord, in their corrupt dead body, in hell, with their Living soul (having been waiting in hell), thus they stand;
1) by the life of their living soul, within their body.
2) by the power of the living soul, within their body, THEY stand before the Son of man, and Confess Belief IN Him, and bow to Him.
3) their corrupt body was never forgiven, nor is forgiveness given a dead body (void of its blood life, forgiven in hell)
4) After that, their evidence of having Rejected God, WHILE in their blood living life, is revealed, IN Gods BOOK of LIFE.
5) The Evidence reveals there IS NO Record of their name.
6) The Sentence which comes AFTER, evidence, and judgement, then commences.
7) Life in the soul, (which belongs to God, departs their soul and returns to God who gave it)
8) Their body, (without life) and their soul, (without life), is then destroyed, burning, to remain forever separated from God, along with all of their corrupt works.
9) There is no consideration for their "spirit", since it was NEVER reborn into "eternal" life, but the Power of God and His Seed.

Second chance for them? No.

Second chance teaching, is more indepth, than simply making the comment.

Hebrews were given the teaching about God.
They (some) began straying and following Gentile ways.
Jews were given the teaching about God.
They (some) began straying and following Gentiles ways.

They (who remain/ed in their religion), were and are IN Belief of Gods Word and Gods Messiah.

Some "started" believing, Gods Word is Jesus, and Gods Messiah is Christ, and Jesus is the Christ.

Many Jews, stopped believing, and teaching, Gods Word is Jesus, and Gods Messiah is Christ, and Jesus is the Christ.

As they were beginning to reject that ^, many Gentiles were beginning to ACCEPT that.

Some Jews today (Messianic Jews) do ACCEPT that.
Some (not many), Gentiles today ACCEPT that.
THEY are all "members" of Christ's Church.
THEY belong to Christ, and shall be "RAPTURED", claimed, redeemed, taken UP, to the clouds to MEET the Lord Christ Jesus IN THE AIR....when the time arrives for Gods Wrath (to commence) upon the Earth.

The majority of Jews, who have KEPT their religion, according to OT laws....DO NOT "yet" believe....Jesus is the Christ Messiah...
Thus they are NOT a member of HIS CHURCH, nor "Raptured, redeemed" UP to meet Jesus in the clouds.

THEY remain on Earth, during the first part of the Tribulation.

During the first part of the Tribulation....the anti-Christ is busy promoting himself to people......WHO....are NOT Faithful to God...and ARE Faithful to God.

(Those IN CHIST, belong to Christ, are no longer on the earth)

144,000 of Gods ministers....ie MEN. Saved. Jews from the 12 Tribes. To minister TO the Jews, about Christ THEE Messiah, Word of God, that THEY may accept the "SEAL/MARK" of the Lord, and AVOID being MARKED, by the anti-Christ.

Those who accept the Lord "SEAL/MARK", shall be BOdILY KILLED, by the anti-Christ.
Their spirits reborn, their souls, waiting under the alter of God, for ALL bodies to be killed, THEN ALL of their living souls and spirits are "redeemed" taken UP to Heaven, with God.
(This occurs near the opening of the 5th seal)

Nothing says THEY go to the Clouds.

Those who take the anti-christ's MARK remain on earth.

THEY experience the Wrath of God, bodily death, unsaved soul, non quickened spirit...
Bodies rot, return to dust.
Living souls go to hell to wait judgement.
Battle begins in the air above the earth, between Michael, Holy Angels, and Evil spirits.
Ends with the Sword of God, ie the Word of God.
Evil spirits, souls of men, sent to hell, to wait for judgement.

And there is a small REMNANT of Jews, who remain MORTAL and have taken NEITHER, the mark of Lord, or the mark of the anti-christ.

Those Jews repopulate the Earth (whose corrupt works have been burned) with mortals, WHILE, Jesus and His Church are present on the Earth.
This lasts 1,000 years.

More occurs after the 1,000 years,
This is brief....however the gist is...

Physically Dead men, DO NOT "get" a second chance.

A mans CHANCE is to BELIEVE, in God, in Christ, while IN his own living FLESH Body.

And scripture teaches, THAT ^ becomes possible, WHEN a man Desires THAT, and the Lord God GIVES such a man THE FAITH for THAT to become accomplished, BY the POWER of God.

God Bless,
Taken

Resurrection? yes... second chance? no.

"it is appointed unto man once to die - then comes the judgment" Hebrews 9. Not "Then comes another life and another chance to change your mind before the judgment".

From the Bible point of view that case is closed.

No my friend from YOUR view point the case is closed. The text you quote has nothing to do with the judgement of mankind.

The true thought of this particular text has been completely confounded through the teachings of orthodoxy. People have been taught to think that it refers to the time when people die, this is abundantly an error brought on by a failure to apply one of the first lessons in true bible study, i.e. reading the context thoroughly to see how it applies.

It is completely unreasonable to suppose that the Apostle had suddenly dropped his topic respecting Christ as the antitypical High Priest, and that he was now referring to mankind in general, totally out of all relationship to his subject.

It is not true that God appointed man to die and after that the judgment. Adam was appointed to life and while thus appointed he had his judgment or trial.

Death is the results of failing the trial, it follows the judgement or sentence, it does not precede it.

Christ having paid the ransom price for all, all mankind are redeemed, and as such the redeemed are appointed to life if they will obey the great Lawgiver; they are not "appointed" to die.

The Apostle Paul, in this particular statement in Hebrews, is giving a lesson on type and antitype. He is comparing the work of the Jewish priests every year with the work of Christ, and telling how these earthly priests went into the Holy and afterwards into the Most Holy. The priest took with him the blood of a bullock, then of a goat. He went into the Holy; and, after the cloud of incense had passed through the second veil and covered the Mercy-Seat, he went into the Most Holy, representing heaven itself. The antitype is that our Lord Jesus offered up Himself as the bullock. The bullock represented Jesus as a man; the goat represented the human nature of the church.

As High Priest, Jesus slew the bullock; at baptism He offered the sacrifice of His humanity. The typical priest took His two hands full of incense and crumbled it in the fire on the incense altar--that represented the three and one-half years of our Lord's ministry. This picture of the incense falling upon the fire represented the glorious qualities of Jesus as He came in contact with the trials of life. In every case His faithfulness yielded a sweet perfume.

When Satan came to Him with temptation, His loyalty was an offering of sweet odor to God. When he had the suggestion come to Him to avoid giving what He had agreed to give, He put the temptation away and would have nothing to do with it. "The cup that My Father hath poured for me shall I not drink it?" was ever His sentiment. The sweet incense went before Him and appeared in the presence of God before He finished His course at Calvary. His death upon the cross was the last crumb of incense falling into the fire, in the antitype.

Then our High Priest went under the veil (the second veil into the Most Holy)—into death. He was parts of three days under the veil, arising on the other side of the veil on the third day. This was the resurrection of Jesus. He arose on the spirit side of the veil, a spirit being. Then, forty days later, He sprinkled upon the Mercy-Seat in the Most Holy, in heaven, the blood of Atonement on behalf of the church.

The apostle here is trying to get the church to see that the Jewish high priest did something of this kind in type. The Jewish high priest went into the most holy of the tabernacle, not without blood. That blood, in every case, represented the blood of the high priest--his life.

Every high priest, when he passed under that veil on the Day of Atonement, was in danger of being stricken dead. If he had not done perfectly, according to the requirements of the Lord, he would have died as he attempted to pass that veil, under that curtain.

And so it would have been death to Jesus if He had not done perfectly the will of the Father.

Then the apostle declares, "It is appointed unto men (i.e. the priests--get the thought) once to die (typically, in passing under the veil) and after that the judgment," or decision.

They (the priest) typified their death in the sacrifice of the bullock, and carrying its blood under the veil. If the priest had not done it perfectly, he died. The bullock represented the priest. After he had sacrificed it he passed with its blood under the second veil. "After death the judgment (i.e. after his typical death represented in the bullock)”.

There is no reference here to the death of mankind, but merely to these priests offering their sacrifice.

Jesus died, passed the second veil, and was raised on the third day. After the high priest in the type had made his offering, and had passed beyond the second veil, and sprinkled the blood upon the Mercy-Seat, he came out and blessed the people. Our Lord Jesus, the High Priest, has not yet come out to bless the people. The antitype is a very large thing, which will take place soon after the completion of the “body of him”, the church. Jesus went under the veil into the Heavenly Holy over two thousand years ago.

He has not yet appeared for the blessing of the world, for their time of blessing waits for the Millennial Age, the Worlds Day of Judgment (of trial).

For he (the Father) hath appointed a day (a thousand year day of judgment, 2 Pet 3: 7, 8), in the which he will judge (try) the world in righteousness by that man (The Christ, Head and Body complete, John 5:22; 1 Cor 6:2) whom he hath ordained” Acts 17:31

"To those that look for Him, He shall appear a second time, not as a sin-offering, but unto salvation." (Heb 9:28)

I would suggest a further study on Understanding the Judgement.

details are "it is appointed unto MAN once to die - then comes the judgment" Heb 9:27-28

27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

The argument is just as in the case with people - we die once ... then judgment so also in Christ's case - dies once then appears for judgment that saves some and not others -- at the second coming.

That comparison works because men do not die, then live and get more chances then die again,... then live and get more chances etc.

Our Maker, Jehovah God, gives people a "second chance" now, when they fail to measure up to his holy standards. When David committed sexual immorality with Bathsheba (2 Sam 11:4), under the Mosaic Law he was to die.(Deut 22:22-24) However, due to David being truly remorseful, he was not put to death, but was given a "second chance", though there were consequences for his immoral actions.(2 Sam 12:10-14)

Hence, at Psalms 51, David wrote after his sin with Bathsheba: "Show me favor, O God, according to your loyal love. Blot out my transgressions according to your great mercy".(Ps 51:1) David deeply appreciated Jehovah's great mercy that gave him a "second chance".

At Exodus 34, after carving a second set of two stone tablets that was to contain the "Ten Words" (Ex 34:28), an angel (the angel here later became Jesus Christ, see Isa 63:9 and 1 Cor 10:1-4) described to Moses Jehovah's loving personality: "Jehovah, Jehovah, a God merciful and compassionate, slow to anger and abundant in loyal love, showing love to thousands, pardoning error and transgression and sin, but he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, bringing punishment for the error of fathers upon sons and upon grandsons, upon the third generation and upon the fourth generation".(Ex 34:6, 7)

And what about Peter, when he denied Jesus three times ?(Luke 22:61; John 18:27) Jesus, in imitating the Father, Jehovah, forgave Peter, giving him a "a second chance", allowing him to remain as one of Jesus 12 apostles due to his remorsefulness.(Luke 22:62)

Or what about Paul, who ' intensely persecuted the congregation of God, devastating it ' ?(Gal 1:13) He was given a "second chance" so that he proved loyal to Jehovah down till his death.(2 Tim 4:7, 8) And for the billions of people who had no opportunity to come to know Jehovah God before they died (Rev 20:13, 14), they too will be given a "second chance" to come to intimately know Jehovah and his Son, Jesus Christ and have an everlasting future.(John 17:3)

For example, what about the evil-doer that expressed remorse and that was to one side of Jesus while both were on torture stakes ? Jesus said that he would be given a "second chance", telling him: "Truly, I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise".(Luke 23:43; Note: the only paradise this Jewish evil-doer knew of was the one in the garden of Eden, so that he recognized that he would see the earthly paradise that Jehovah originally purposed [see Isa 45:18] and have the opportunity of living in it forever)

In contrast, those who are determined to keep the "fires of hell burning" are most likely the ones who does not want anyone to have a "second chance". They love to see people tormented forever and are like Cain.(1 John 3:12)

Gladly, the "fires of hell" have never been burning, for that false religious doctrine will soon see its permanent end at "the great tribulation" when the false religious empire called Babylon the Great is destroyed.(Matt 24:21; Rev 17:16, 17;Note: the false religious doctrine of "hell" being a place of torment hinges on the false belief in the immortality of the soul, in which the Bible shows the soul is us as a person with all our desires [Deut 12:20] and can be destroyed; see Jesus words at Matt 10:28 and James words at James 5:20)

The O.P. says that MAYBE the people of old needed a second chance.
A second chance is not necessary because from the beginning of time, people were able to know God and to decide if they cared to worship Him or not.

Romans 1:19-20
19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Persons who worshipped God went to Paradise, or Abraham's Bossom , until Jesus died on the cross and freed the captives from satan's grip. Jesus killed death and death no longer had the sting it did before. Now when those who love God die, they go to be directly with Him.
Luke 15:19-31

Jesus went to Hades, or Paradise, or Abraham's Bossom and freed the worshippers of God who were waiting there for their release.

Persons in hell did not worship God and were judged accordingly.
There was a huge chasm between those in Abraham's Bossom and those in hell.

There was no reason for Jesus to go to hell.
WRONG!
The Bible says he went to hell.
Why not?
He made it.

Our Maker, Jehovah God, gives people a "second chance" now, when they fail to measure up to his holy standards.

Sounds like you're pushing works.

He was not put to death because he was the king.

Not one word about a second chance after death here.

Peter was very much alive.

Try again. Paul persecuted Christians.

He took advantage of the first chance, so he didn't need a second chance.

In contrast, those who are determined to keep the "fires of hell burning" are most likely the ones who does not want anyone to have a "second chance". They love to see people tormented forever and are like Cain.(1 John 3:12)

Hell will not burn forever. It will be cast into lake of fire and brimstone, which will burn forever.

Your soul it is not a immortal, but your spirit is.

Does Jesus give people a 2nd chance after death?

of course! as soon as you are baptized you are dead, and resurrected
just like Preach says, only maybe you missed it bc literal baptism, and you were under water i guess
but you could always go get real close during someone else's literal baptism, i don't quite recall the words
something like "buried with Him in something something,
raised with Him in something something else?"

Your soul it is not a immortal, but your spirit is.
A spirit with no soul.
So WHO are you going to be??

We all have a body, a soul, and a spirit.
The body dies...
The soul and spirit live on.

Your soul makes you who you are, if that does not live on...WHO will you be?

bb, this is the first chance.
We were DEAD,

I get what you mean though.

2. Man A Trinity (Spirit, Soul, Body)

2. Man A Trinity (Spirit, Soul, Body)

This can be a very confusing topic.
It's not confusing to me because I've studied it with two different churches and they both taught the same.

Man can be seen as a dichotomy:
Body
Soul/Spirit

In this case the body is separated from the Soul and Spirit...the Spirit becomes a part of the soul.

Man can also be seen as a trichotomy:
Body
Soul
Spirit

I like this better because it makes it easier to understand the different parts of what constitutes a living person. In this case, even animals have souls which is why each animal is different. A person may own two dogs or two cats and find that each one is totally different. A soul is what makes us be us. Animals do not have a spirit because they have no knowledge of God...man has a spirit, when a man is born of the spirit, the spirit affects the soul. 2 Thessalonians 5:23 supports the trichotomy model.

Following is a diagram which explains this well.
