2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Those listed in Acts 1:13-14 were of one accord and were assembled together in Jerusalem.

2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

The Jews and proselytes in the city investigated what was going on.

2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

The apostles, filled with the Holy Ghost, began to speak in tongues.

2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Speaking in tongues, as can clearly be seen above in verses 8 and 11, involves the ability given the apostles to speak and be heard in a specific language, not of their own. It was a sign given them to substantiate their ministry.

Peter, standing with the eleven, spoke.

2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

Pentecost and the filling of the Holy Host was prophesied by Joel. This was a fulfillment of prophecy in Joel 2.

2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

In the above verses it should be noted that Peter was not addressing the newly formed church, the Body of Christ, but rather, Israel only. Peter preached Jesus as Christ and his resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus Christ would establish the future promise of His Kingdom on earth. This promised Kingdom would put him on the throne of David; enable Israel to reign and rule with him over the nations; and be a light of salvation to the Gentiles, thru the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Peter, in the above verses, states that Jesus is both Lord and Christ. Jesus rose from the dead, showing his diety, that he is the Son of God.

In verse 38 below, Peter shows that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Saviour of Israel, who alone can forgive the sins of the nation of Israel.

2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.

Peter is only offering the above promises of remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost to Israel and those Gentiles who would come to God thru Israel.

2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

The believers were baptized according to the Israel program of recognition of the name; the authority; and the idenity of Jesus. They were added to them, the church of the Kingdom to come, not the Body of Christ.

2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

They sold all they had and provided to all according to the commandment to Israel by Jesus in Matthew 13:46 and 19:21.

2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

They were in one accord as well. The church here is not the Body of Christ. The church here are the believers in Christ who were promised entrance into the Kingdom on earth. The kingdom which is postponed and interrupted by our Dispensation of Grace.

You'll have to post more as I'm not getting your point. Are you saying that Pentecost was NOT the beginning of Christ's Church? I don't understand.

Jumping the gun a bit, aren't we, in assuming the Apostles were "speaking" in foreign languages? The Bible doesn't say that. In fact those "hearing" in their own tongues would have been able to recognize "foreign tongues", at least to some extent, since they were multi-lingual enough to converse among themselves to those of other countries..... and they did not say, "How is it these men speak in languages they do not know?" Quite to the contrary, what they found remarkable was the fact that whatever was coming out of the Apostle's mouths was "being heard" as if that sound was one of 15 different languages.

I think they spoke in a heavenly tongue, and the devout Jews also received the gift of interpretation. More later if interest develops.

Yes, and those reading the book would have known what interpretation of tongues was seeing as the letter to the Corinthians was written about 15 years prior, and was circulated among all the churches. In Acts 2, only the devout Jews were given this sign, the operative word being "devout." The mockers only heard gibberish and thought they were drunk. It is not wise to be seen among the scoffers of this world, or even from inside the church.

All we are told is the translation that "they spoke in other tongues", and we are not told what that means…. only that it must not have been in their usual language.

Scripture interprets scripture. There is no need to guess.

They sold all they had and provided to all according to the commandment to Israel by Jesus in Matthew 13:46 and 19:21.
yes, and Paul was having to collect alms for them a couple years later, too

Doug,
Looks like you are somewhat confused. The Gospel was first preached to the Jews in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, and later to the Gentiles. But the only way a sinner comes to God is THROUGH CHRIST, not through Israel.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by [EXCEPT THROUGH] me. (John 14:6).

Paul restates the same concept in "i become like one of them, in order to etcetc"
and we just follow the ancient pagan practice of secret sayings that might influence God, spells really
is what the WC church has turned tongues into

the passage is really about "speak their language, not yours" imo

Of course the Bible does say that. About 15 foreign languages are listed in Acts 2 to confirm and establish that the apostles were speaking foreign languages supernaturally. That is really what the spiritual gift of languages (called tongues) was all about. In the 17th century the word "tongue" was used for language and also corresponds to the exact translation of the Greek glossa.

I'm constantly amazed that one hundred can read the new testament and found one hundred sects based on private interpretation. Tongues and interpretations have nothing on Bible interpretation.

I think it's attributable to two things predominantly:
1. A specific class of demons that disseminate occultism, false religion, and false doctrine. They have done a wonderful job of creating doctrinal havoc in the modern church.
2. A lack of fear among believers, who don't realize that by assuming the role of "teacher" they take upon themselves a grave responsibility in the Lord, and will be held accountable for what they taught.

For me there are a few semi-conundrums in the Bible..

Paul said in the church he'd rather speak five words with understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:19 KJVS
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Which five words? Well perhaps these;

Ephesians 4:11 KJVS
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Teachers and teaching is referred to many time yet we read;

As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone (KJV says "any man") to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. 1 John 2:27 NASB

On the one hand we establish that God placed teachers while in 1John we are told that the anointing (of the Holy Spirit) teaches us and we need no man.

That teachers are for believers vs the unbelievers is warranted by "yet in the church".

We see learning, that can only spring from being taught;

1 Corinthians 14:31 KJVS
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

The Holy Spirit will teach us through his anointing as we spend time before God. The more time we spend with God the more we learn if we do so with a right and good heart.

I've learned much from many Christian men but more from the anointing of the Holy Spirit. There are those Christians who would rather hear teaching from men than spend time seeking God and learning from him.

Those sitting under the teaching of men alone are far more apt to be taught wrong things of the scripture.

Mentioning to a visitor that I used to enjoy dove hunting he was horrified. His grandfather had taught him that the dove was a "HOOOO.... Leeeee" bird and we were not to harm one. I was amazed at the change in his countenance. As if I had invited a Hindu to help me butcher a cow for supper.

Just for instance also the Jehovah's witnesses believe blood transfusions are forbidden by God since "the life is in the blood", not discerning that the life is in the name of blood of the savior.

Demonic diversions propel multitudes in the wrong direction by means of teachers teaching false doctrines based on a complete lack of comprehension of what scripture says.

We as Christians must read the Scriptures constantly and pray. Deceivers of the brethren are abundant.

1 John 4:1 KJVS
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
