My brother swears quite a lot but when I hear it I just ignore it.. is that ok, like I don't have to tell him not to do I?And you know you're not supposed to take God's name in vain, is that like when you say "oh my God" and is it bad to say "what the hell" and "damn it!" too? And you know how lying is bad, does that mean white lies as well because my mum just got some new glasses and if she asks me whether I like them I would probably say they're ok even though I don't like them because I don't want to upset her?

Swearing has something to do with pride and God hates that, that's why the Lord said we only needto say "yes" or "no","But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. Matthew 5:34-37 (ESV)As to phrases like "oh my God", even if it was just an empty phrase could be offending to someand we are not supposed to be a stumbling block to our fellow Christian brothers and sisters."It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble."Romans 14:21 (ESV)There is no reason to lie there is always a way of saying things in the negative in a nice way.Like saying "It's alright if you're not a Jew because nobody is perfect".About your brother, you can just ignore him because some people learn the hard way or if you reallycare for him, you can pray to God to help you in convincing him about what is right and wrong."for it is written, 'As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,and every tongue shall confess to God.'" Romans 14:11 (ESV)

I have a sister, and I love her very much

. (She is younger, so she gets picked on -- by MYSELF of course XD). First of all I see a central problem in your post. You are TOO passive! I know you are trying to make your mother and brother happy by not being confrontational, but you are creating another problem by doing this. Let me give you an example:Say there is a hydro-electric generator in a dam that does not wish to complain to the operator if something is wrong --> what happens? Well the operator has no feedback, and the operator only knows that something is wrong after the generator over-heats and shuts off (or burns up). You need to tell your brother to knock it off! And you need to tell your mom that you don't like those glasses. Otherwise you will bottle up your frustration and explode on them later -- causing all manner of harm to the relationships.I'm not saying you should change your personality and become the most confrontational "crazy-woman" around. I'm saying if something bothers you, tell them -- they will listen.

Well said Radd we myself included don't take a stand and let things slide knowing that we are to stand up and say "that's wrong. We can't be afraid to stand up for ALL our beliefs, not just the ones that are easily digested by everyone.

I think its a stretch to say that lying is not allowed at all among Christians. I think theres nothing wrong with white lies becasue God truly knows whats in your heart.

Using the name of God in ANY way other than praise is using it in vain. Also, anything that is not the truth is a lie. Still, I can understand not wanting to hurt someone's feelings. A woman asks her husband, "Honey, do these pants make me look fat?" Does he tell the truth? "Yes, they do. I didn't know they made pants that big." Or does he lie? "No, you look good in them." He's trying to look serious while he lies to her.

I curse every now and then. I just don't see the point in saying that it's against Christianity or anything like that. If I remember correctly, St Paul cursed too in Philippians 3:8, "For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I might gain Christ." The Greek word used here for "rubbish" is a Greek swear word. I think that's pretty funny.Allan.

I dont think God care much what words we use cuss words change with the times whats a cuss word yesterday is not tomorrow its the emotions behind the cursing that he cares about if you are angry or hurtful or filled with hate towards another that's what bothers him. Not the Words themselves. If curse words are said in jest or to ones self or an inanimate object (like my computer) I don't think God cares much.

And I agree Kriss, yet I would take God's compassion even further. God looks for every reason to love someone. So when you are angry and bitter at someone, God will look behind that to the very soul of your relationship rather than staying at a distance, looking at the anger itself.Allan.
